Wendy & Lisa & Trevor Horn

-

I remember somehow (vagely) that the Girls did an album together with the producer Trevor Horn.

As from what I recall is that they recorded (the album), but due to problems with the producer it was never released or even materialized.

Is there anything more known about that ?

Was it ever released as a bootleg ?

There's a serious gap between releases back in the nineties and I think it's that particular album's reason.

Anyone more info about this ?

No less than 2 versions of the whole album (I believe neither was the completed, ready for release, product, more like work in progress configurations, but I'm not sure) were leaked online, so it can be heard.

Use the Search box on here for that. It's been detailed. Trevor was a homophobe and it was not a good experience for the girls.

Trevor Horn produced Wendy and Lisa's song 'Closing of the Year' from the film Toys. It is a beautiful song and Wendy performs it in the film as lead singer of the choir. teddy

I remember 'Closing Of The Year', which is an absolute great song.

Never seen the performance of Wendy though. Thanks wink

Also thanks for the other tips.

Always felt this was super weird, that W&L's sexualiy became such an issue for him, given some of the brilliant gay artists TH has worked with in his career.

Yeah, you can't exactly walk through being in the music industry and be a bigot. But then again, you look at people like Dean Cain, James Woods, etc., who are or were A-list people and are now raging Republicans.

One of my favorite holiday songs. It's just beautiful. It should have been, and still should be played on radio during the holiday/New Year's season. Love the video too.

*

I remember it being played on MTV briefly during the time that the film Toys was released - also a great and quirky film. Wendy is in the film at the beginning - she is at the top of the Christmas tree when the children's choir starts singing the song.

*

Glad to see the video on YT now. I found it a couple of years ago, and hadn't seen it in years.

Wendy and Lisa's comments about dealing with their sexuality with the industry and with Trevor Horn - for their interview with Out magazine in 2009:

*

You were dealing with this during the Reagan years when the AIDS crisis was exploding and the progressive attitude regarding gays started reversing. It mustve been hard to contend with that while the music industry pushed you to be the next Mary Jane Girls.

*
Wendy and Lisa, nearly in unison: Thats exactly what they wanted.

*
Wendy: We couldnt have been more opposite of that. We were just geeky musicians. We still are. We did a record 10, 11 years ago with Trevor Horn that was never released. We were hoping that we would have the next fucking Grace Jones Slave to the Rhythm extravaganza. We thought, This is going to be genius! Were going to be musician freaks and experiment. And he, honest to god, wanted us to be the Spice Girls. My heart was broken.

*
Lisa: Not only that, but he was so homophobic. I hate to say it, but he wouldnt even let us eat off of his silverware on Friday because he was Jewish. It turned into this nightmare. He and his wife, oh God, I dont want to talk disparagingly about anybody, but it made us very uncomfortable.

*
Wendy: Our homosexuality became quite an issue for them.

Thats especially disturbing coming from the guy who produced Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Grace Jones and the Pet Shop Boys.

*
Wendy: And Marc Almond and ABC and t.A.T.u. You name it.

*
Lisa: He would come in and start talking, Well, I asked my rabbi about homosexuality and my rabbi said its comparable to being born a mass murderer. You can be born a mass murderer, but if you practice mass murder its sinful. I was like, Okay, you can be born gay, but if you practice being gay, you might as well be a mass murderer? Oh, thanks Trev. Lets record this song now.

*

Very sad that they had to deal with not being able to be who they are during that time.

*

Here's a great video of Wendy and Lisa doing the "What's In My Bag?" shoot at Amoeba records in LA around 2010, I think. Really great and funny! Wendy is so passionate about the music. Lisa mentions the issue with Trevor Horn briefly when she talks about the Grace Jones CDs she picked out. I also had no idea that they worked with Grace on her more recent album:

Like I said above, two complete, different configurations of the album made it to the internet. One is a bit of a mess when it comes to the tracklist, and some tracks may be similar on both I never bothered to compare each track, but altogether that's a 12 tracks + another 13 tacks folder.

Isn't the Friendly Fire bootleg a compilation of there sessions with Trevor Horn?

Or are there other complete bootlegs for those recordings?

Good catch!

It contains what I have labeled as the first configuration, but not what I have labeled as the second config. Not even sure if those labels are accurate.

I'm not big on the "digging" process on the net smile Can you send me an Org note if you have a top on where to find the tracks?

Thank you so much of all these great infos.

I watched the video of W&L picking out their favorite music (dowbloaded even of some of 'm).

Nice to hear and see that. Never did before.

-

Yes I knew they worked on Grace jones last record. smile

You can recognize their typical sound in the song.

Going to look for the unreleased songs. Their 3 albums from the late 80's, plus Girl Bros and White Flags Of Winter Chimneys are fantastic. Such beautiful music.
