Those artist didn't have a platform back then to showcase their talent. Because they weren't booked on the major talk shows unless they had a crossover hit. Arsenio's show really opened doors for artist and entertaners that wouldn't normally be seen. His show also discovered MANY artist that later became HUGE. Like Mariah Carey,TLC etc. The list is ENDLESS! Of course the MAIN MAN PRINCE was given the show to himself to showcase his MEGA CHARISMATIC performances. I was right there to experience it live & UNCUT.

I will ALWAYS bowdown to Arsenio for what he achieved. He was an INNOVATOR. Not a HATER like most here that will remain nameless.

Here are Mariah Carey's live appearances on the talk shows once Vision Of Love was released:

*

June 1 Syndicated The Arsenio Hall Show Hollywood, Los Angeles "Vision of Love" [4]
June 5 CBS 1990 NBA Finals Auburn Hills, Michigan "America the Beautiful" [5]
July 20 ABC Good Morning America New York City "Vision of Love" (piano-only) [6]
September 10 Syndicated The Arsenio Hall Show Hollywood, Los Angeles "Vision of Love" / "Love Takes Time" [7]
October Syndicated It's Showtime at the Apollo New York City "Vision of Love" / "Love Takes Time" [8]
October 27 NBC Saturday Night Live New York City "Vision of Love" / "Vanishing" [9]
November 10 Unknown Kulan Stockholm "Vision of Love" / "Love Takes Time" [10]
November 20 NBC The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson Burbank, California "Vision of Love" / "Love Takes Time"

Here you go....Mariah's bookings Summer/Fall 1990. As you can see, many of the major talk shows/late night shows were booking her during this time period.

*
Brenda K Starr is credited for pushing Mariah's career forward - NOT Arsenio Hall. And of course, Tommy Mottolla, head of Columbia records at that time, who signed her as soon as he heard her demo tape. MTV was also running her Vision Of Love video around the clock. I remember it well.

*

"As Starr's friendship with Carey grew, so did her interest in helping Carey succeed in the industry. In December 1988, Carey accompanied Starr to a record executives' gala, where she handed her demo tape to the head of Columbia Records, Tommy Mottola, who listened to it on his way back home.[25][26] After the first two songs, he was interested in her; later, after searching for Carey for two weeks, he immediately signed her and began mapping out her commercial debut.[25] "

*

So, please, stop confusing "hating" with stating the facts in order to correct all of the "embelleshing" happening here.

Then you failed to read the entire post. So, how does Mariah being booked on Arsenio first in the long line of appearances translate to him "discovering" her or being responsible for her success??!! This is just absurd thinking. If Brenda hadn't invited Mariah to that record exec's party so she could hand Tommy M her demo tape, who knows what would have happened??

*

Also, singers/performers have agents. Those agents communicate with a person hired by the talk show to book the talent. Arsenio was not personally booking the talent for his show. The "bookers" are responsible for finding and scheduling the talent that "fits" the show's demographic.

Here's an article published by The Times during the Arsenio Hall show, and coincidentally, it mentions his show:

*

Gail Evans has 9,000 telephone numbers. She has dozens of earthquake survivors, 15 people who say they've had afterlife experiences, 4 who insist they've seen Big Foot. She has the phone number of Cher's mother and the number of Rocky Graziano's upstairs neighbor. She has business numbers, home numbers, country home numbers, car phone numbers, airplane numbers and beeper numbers.

Ms. Evans knows how to reach people because it is her job. As the head booker for Cable News Network, she rounds up guests to be interviewed on the round-the-clock news channel. On an ordinary day, Ms. Evans and her staff have to line

up 20 guests; a heavy news day might require twice as many.

Whenever she meets someone, Ms. Evans tries to envision the person before a camera. ''You never know where you can find a guest,'' she said. ''I've booked guys I dated, girls I had as college roommates. Guests can be anywhere.'' Highly Competitive

With the large number of news and talk shows, booking guests to appear on the programs has become a highly competitive business. All someone has to do is make a little news and suddenly ''Good Morning America,'' ''Today,'' ''CBS This Morning,'' ''Nightline,'' ''Nightwatch,'' CNN, ''The MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour'' and maybe even Geraldo Rivera are on the phone. More hosts are on the way.

This month, Pat Sajak, the master of ceremonies of ''Wheel of Fortune,'' is to begin his own late-night talk show. Joan Rivers is returning with a daytime talk show. Kenny Rogers has a show. So do Arsenio Hall and Beverly Sills. Fresh faces with something new to say are in great demand.

It is never enough just to find someone to come on and talk. In fact, public-relations agents continually inundate bookers with available guests, usually people who have a book or movie to promote. But while there are people who will chat about anything, they are not always people who can talk engagingly and succinctly while staring into a camera.

Thus bookers must interview guests to make sure they will not freeze or consistently say dreadfully dull things. Good bookers like to believe they have reliable antennae for prospective guests who will perform well.

Prospective guests who do not pass muster or are no longer needed because someone more prominent has been booked subsequently are dumped.

ANYBODY in the industry knows how artist & guest are booked on shows including me. Also anybody that's a fan of Mariah or heard any of her interviews knows that Brenda K. Starr discovered her. ALL the other unnecessary details U posted (which I already knew about) .As well as the majority of other artist I'm well informed of about was a COMPLETE waste of time. rolleyes

It's really NOTHING I don't already know about tthe music/movie/TV industry that U can tell me. Since I been involved in it since I was 12 years old. I've lived a GREAT life!

My point was that Arsenio's show was the first to break A LOT of new artist at that time period. That MOST if any never seen or heard before. Which U proved with your listing of Mariah's FIRST TV appearance that broke on the GREAT GROUNDBREAKING Arsenio Hall Show.

Your obsession with trying to prove me wrong is starting to really bore me now. bored

No, it's really not an obsession at all, rather, an interest in correcting many of your - as peggy put it -"over the top" embelleshments and far-fetched statements here.

ARSENIO DID NOT GIVE MARIAH HER "FIRST BREAK"!!! Her album had already been released, MTV was playing her video around the clock, and she was already booked to appear on bigger shows than Arsenio's at that time. Shows like SNL and Johnny Carson booked their guests many months in advance, because of the demand to appear on those shows. Tommy Mottola gave Mariah her break when he signed her to the label. If Mariah had not had an album to promote she would not have been a guest on the show.

Again.....the order of her live performances - AH June 1, NBA Playoffs June 5th, GMA July 20th, etc...is of no consequence, because her single Vision Of Love was quickly climbing the charts on its own, and MTV was playing her video constantly.

Arsenio Hall is NOT responsible for Mariah Carey's success. This is just laughable lol

I agree. He did have popular guests - especially for the younger demographic, but he lacked talent as an interviewer which is a key factor for a talk show to succeed long-term. The "side bits" got old too - not much comedic creativity there.

Arsenio is VERY easy to talk to. Which is ALL U really need to be a SUCCESSFUL & GROUNDBREAKING talk show host. Denise's personality was very much like a little sweet innocent girl with sex appeal. Any man couldn't help but touch her in her presence.

I think they wanted to touch her for sure, but not as a "sweet little girl". Come on!! Regardless of the person she was on the inside, she had made the choice to go with the "sex" persona from the start. Obviously, some of that was a result of Prince's direction, but she had done soft porn prior to meeting Prince, posed for Playboy multiple times and sang about sex post Prince. She got pigeon-holed, and was not treated respectfully by the industry and by men who hosted shows. Arsenio should not have been touching her, and doing the "sexual innuendos", but that is what she portrayed - whether she really wanted to or not. That was her image.

*

Please stop sugar-coating what was really happening!!!

*

If you refuse to accept my thoughts here, then below are Denise's own thoughts on how she felt during that time:

There is a huge list of people who were/are very easy to talk to, and yet they failed to maintain a successful talk show. Sorry, but it takes much more than "being easy to talk to" to connect with the viewing audience and keep their attention.

Please stop sugar-coating what was really happening!!!

If you refuse to accept my thoughts here, then below are Denise's own thoughts on how she felt during that time:

I already know about Denise's accepting of The Lord & savior Jesus Christ as her personal savior and her journey into a more peaceful life. I discussed it with her & we both had a lot in common.

PLEASE STOP with your unnecessary copy/paste quotes. You're wasting your time. I already know EVERYTHING it is to know about the beautiful Denise & her ALREADY friendship with Arsenio.

Oh, right....of course how could I forget?? You know everything. Well, in that case, then you have proven my point which is that you are sugar-coating and embelleshing the facts, and/or the reality of what actually occurred 30+ years ago. It's one or the other.
