777-9311 Linn Pattern: Jam & Lewis say it was Dave Garibaldi

I never believed it before, figuring someone must've had the original preset patterns and would show it off.

But Mam & Lewis say it was a program built in to the LM-1 made by Dave Garibaldi

http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/lectures/jam-lewis-lecture

"Ah ha! So that was the LM-1, that was the Linn LM-1. And when the drums… When the LM-1 initially came out there were drum beats that were put in by drummers. They actually had drummers put in beats. The “777-9311” beat was put in by a drummer named David Garibaldi who is a drummer for Tower Of Power. If you ever have the opportunity or pleasure of hearing Morris Day play the drums, Morris Day plays exactly like David Garibaldi. David Garibaldi was Morris Day’s hero playing the drums. And that’s how that ended up becoming the beat for “777.”

I still don't believe that there''s a preset with that specific pattern and i'm yet to see someone prove that there is.

I think you mean Sharon Bryant? She was the original lead singer of Atlantic Starr before Barbara Weathers (who sang lead on Always, Secret Lover). .

.

Sharon did lead on "Touch A Four Cleaf Clover," "When Love Calls" etc..

I know, I know. and I think Jesse Johnson said it on facebook as well.

The other thing i'd say about it is that it's such a complex drumbeat for a preset, I could believe that it's a preset that Prince built on and changed a bit but would you really have something like that just programmed in?

I'm still struggling with what to believe.

.

.

the idea of starting the beat NOT on the 1, (I think it's no the 16th note after 1, not even the "and"/8th note) is so SICK!!! It seems like something Prince would do .

.

.

But Jam & Lewis just said that. Then again they got some other stuff a little confused too.

.

.

I sitll think someone must have the original patterns of LM1 somewhere.

Really?? eek I had heard that,in 1984 when she left Atlantic Starr, her label wanted to pair her with Jam and Lewis for her solo album but she didn’t want to work with them. Some of the tracks that they wrote for her were then given to Janet Jackson for Control.

I struggle to believe it, but I trust Jam & Lewis. It does seem like something Prince would program.

I wonder if maybe it's just the basics of the kick/snare that were a preset and then Prince did the claps and hi-hats.

The weird thing is, lots of people have owned LM1's. You'd think that this would have been mentioned before. I'm sure even some people on this forum in the past have owned them.

There's no real reason to not believe it. Prince used whatever he had at his fingertips to make music. If his favorite drum machine happened to have a pattern in it and he used it, even better. Who knows what BPM it was meant to be played at, but Garibaldi or whoever certainly didn't know Prince was going to pull out a bass and make it one of the funkiest things he'd ever produce in his entire career.

Holy shit.

The ENTIRE pattern, or just part of it?

What did he confirm? What did you ask? We're no further along than we were before.

My guess is that the drum pattern minus the hi-hats and additional beats is the preset, mostly because it sounds like one. If that is the case then the Linn Pattern on 777-93-11 is not pre-programmed because those damn hi-hats are half the song! Prince did a very clever thing by leaving the very first beat of the preset out of the intro, making it sound more complicated than it actually is. You can hear the actual preset in the second bar, it makes a lot more sense.

What are you talking about? The entire pattern has a "rest" on 1. The whole unique thing about it is that every measure, the bass drum and the first bass note starts in between the 1 and 2, either on the "and" (8th note) or the 16th note after 1.

.

.

That happens every measure, not just the intro.

I'm literally talking about the preset, not the song. Extra bassdrum or toms come in when the cymbals come it but the basic beat on what I assume is the preset is straight forward. The best way to explain is to listen to the first few seconds of this person recreating the beat and then listen to the actual intro, you can hear how Prince cut off the first beat of the preset at the start, I guess the first beat of the song is also the last beat of Wild and Loose.

edit: i'm after digging up the 7" of this song and that first beat is actually part of it there since there's no Wild and Loose before it.

I asked if he programmed the pattern featured in the track - he said yes. Have messaged him to confirm that it's the full pattern with no hats, but no response. You may as well message him yourself though to try and establish details, he has a fan page on Facebook. I'm inclined to think that it's the full pattern without the claps which he did.

Is that an original Linn preset?

It seems like the clap on 4 is also a little ahead of the beat.

The clap is late and too loud! But I'm not doing it over. I just wanted to see how close I could get to the original.
