Vanity's overdose different years reported by the media.

Hi all,

Many media sources reported that Vanity's overdose that led to abandoning her old life happened in 1994. This topic has been discussed here (http://prince.org/msg/5/428804) but it was left without closure. After doing some more research I found one article that reported 1992 as the correct year: this makes more sense considering all the things that have been said here on the forums and by Denise in various interviews. You can find the article here: https://www.news.com.au/e...8f65d060aa In addition, in this video recorded in 2013 ( https://www.youtube.com/w...9kvVmCsXRw 5:08-5:11)Denise herself said that she found the Lord 21 years ago, which means 1992 is the correct year. Media sources shamelessly copy and paste one another's articles without actually verifying the contents.

Separate but related issues concerning the dates, but I fully understand your logic because it is one, if not my biggest pet peeves, regarding the reason why the overdose occurred.

.

The overdose was in early 1994, and Yes, it was after she found the Lord.

It’s also what gave people a legitimate argument against helping Denise.

.

Prior to the 1994 overdose I had only spoken with Denise on the phone. The first day we met in person Denise was still in the hospital recovering from that overdose. DeBorah took a picture of Denise and I holding our 3 month old son (her nephew), who was born in late 1993.

.

Denise did an interview after she found the Lord in 92 and before her overdose in 94, where she comments about current pop stars.

.

My personal opinion… Denise’s “overdose” was not an accident. Denise believe in baptism (“REPENT, REPENT”) she believed that she had been forgiven, washed clean of all her sins by the Lord and could begin again. So when she could no longer fight the cravings of her addiction she was no longer just failing herself, she believe she had failed God.

How was she to live with that?

.

.

Someone should ask DeBorah about her conversations with Denise about becoming a JW. Denise had ask me a few questions about JWs over the years, so I didn’t think much about the JW books I found her storage and the Pro and Con list about JWs beliefs; which was not accurate.

Interesting, thanks Toban.

Wonder if the reason she was asking questions about the JW's was because Prince became one?

No need to wonder, that is what they were talking about; again.

.

It never occurred to me to tell DeBorah about the books or the list. For good reason I wasn’t much interested in DeBorah’s stories about Denise and Prince back then. I do remember thinking “isn’t he married?” as she begins telling that Denise snuck in another call to Prince while he was married.

.

From what I can see from most her old phone bills Denise continued to be in touch with someone in Minneapolis.

.

DeBorah comment that caught my attention was said in frustration. “I told her, why don’t you just become a Jehovah’s Witness” she said as if it was the only thing in the way of them getting back together.

My only questions were, “You and Denise discussed her becoming a Jehovah’s Witness? (Her response, “Yes”). My next question was “You have no idea what you just said, do you?

.

Honestly, I’m trying to get DeBorah to write but she refuses to do it without me. The irony of it is that I now find it equally as difficult to be around her because of her sister.

wave Toban!

Great to see you posting again about Denise. It is always such fun when you share information. You always have so much wrapped in a few words.

Hope this is not too forward or offensive to you. . . .

So. . . if Denise was calling Prince while he was married - did she talk with him? Do you know if he responded?

*

I How recent were the Minneapolis phone calls, any in 2016?

*

lol LOVE how the 2 sisters were so matter of fact about it all and it is like eek for me reading it

*

Thanks again for sharing this info.

I really wish you both would write together to get Denise's story out there.

It's no secret that Prince was a Player. Sometimes the way you sound, you don't care for Prince very much, which nobody can blame you for that.

I hope you continue to post and share Denise's story and again maybe you and DeBorah can get some writing done. I know a lot of people are interested in it.

No issues with Prince, my frustrations back then (late 90s) were with Denise. Back then her religious zealotry was way over the top. Everybody was going to hell she'd often tell DeBorah, who was a new mother at the time.

That's when DeBorah got into the habit of handing me the phone while Denise was in mid-sentence/sermon, and Denise would continue to talk before she realized DeBorah was long gone... in the car down the road; gone.

It wasn't everyday or everytime they spoke but throughout the mid to late 90s Denise was upsetting DeBorah on a regular basis. A lot of it also had to do with the book she was writing.

I wish more people understood that when people first find God and are new Christians they tend to be "on fire" for God..... and usually are over the top with their Christianity. I sure was for years, then I calmed the heck down and stopped trying to push God on everyone.

You see, when you find something that is good for you, you are excited and later you learn to balance yourself better and aren't as zealous about it outwardly. You learn balance.... it is the same with diet changes, relationships and the birth of a 1st child. How many times do we see new parents flooding timelines with pics of their babies? New vegans shaming meat eaters, or newly scuplted people who got their bodies muscular giving out unsolicited work out/diet advice? We as people always get excited when we are finally happy, we can be quite annoying to others..... just sayin'.

DeBorah is finally beginning to write, but what she is writing is not exactly for public consumption.

To get her to write I suggested that she start with telling our sons about her sister.

.

You personally should send her a list of questions to help her understand what people know, don't know and what they might want to know. Not that every question is meant to be answered, but rather to prepare her for what will possibly be ask of her.

You know where to send it.

Or mail it to me at Denise's old mailing address for her book, 39270 Paseo Padre Parkway #214 if you wish to send something handwritten.

Denise had wrote what looks like a beautiful coffee table book about her life. Detailing her killing of Vanity and her life back to Denise. I so wish she didn't leave this earth still angry at me.

"That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when eye was doing the Purple Rain tour eye had a lot of people who eye knew eye'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."prince

Great thanks to all the folks who have contributed to this thread, especially Toban. It's all served as an extremely interesting insight into Denise and contradictions surrounding that period in her life.

Another thing I've always wondered is how old her third sister Patricia was (the one who dated Eddie Murphy for a spell). Thanks to anyone who could clarify that.

Didn't Denise/Vanity already tell her own story? You don't get more qualified than that.
