Toban Appreciation thread, our own and only Denise Matthews Insight connection

It took me a long while to warm up, but now I just love the tidbit he drops about the times he spent with Denise. I kind of missed some backstory but I've enjoyed what I've heard so far.

Toban

As Family it’s difficult but I try to see Denise as an Artist and a Poet first; as I do Prince. Mused to convey an elaborate mix of complex and simple messages by means of vivid visual art and or by rhythmic poetic storytelling to inspire and move an audience.

So moved I am always curious to know, as the audience and as a poet, the story behind the images, art, poetry and music, (empathic) wanting too fully experience what provoked, moved and mused them.

.

.

YOU, I, POET defined
.
People tend to seek justification for their actions.
But most wish they had a more just reason for their inaction.

For them

writing for reality TV might be attractive.
.
I,
Like you,
have a more empirical reaction.
Leading to an imbued descriptive caption,
to the ironies of a life-scene’s illustration.
.
But do I “Think” or do I “Feel” about this issue?
Which course shall best express,
diluting less

nuance
to this pictograph in my narrative view?
.
Sublime feelings leading
complexities in meanings,
interpreted by passed happenings
and those collections of experienced satisfactions...
or lack thereof?
.
YES?
NO?
MAYBE?
Well, how about all of the above?
.
A divide in the rational from the emotional
might be considered a more practical
or logical analysis on which to base a response.
But,
where does that leave us...
or for that matter, where does it lead us?
.
Some intellect may be gain

by dismissing the distractions of emotion's reigning

down to cloud our vision
beyond our own fears.
.
And though it may be hard to see clear
when you are looking through the emotions of a tear,
it is that liquid vision

that can reflect the view

back towards the within.
Introspection, Insight, Awareness, Intuition, Self-examination

and Contemplations of said Observations.

.
For behind the Logic and Rational,
are the Passionate and Emotional.
By Right or by Design we find
there is no other way around it.
To have life “we breathe”
To have meaning “we seek to achieve…
knowledge… through reasoning,
but mostly through our own experienced feelings.”
.
Burden, blessing or gift
emotions are the driving force behind it,
Know it!
except it!
.
We are the chroniclers of life’s events…
The imagined, dreamed and or personally viewed.
The what‘s, the when‘s, the where’s
the why’s and how’s

we were ever so personally moved…
by pointing out the ironic
and answering the rhetoric.
Know this… You can’t ignore it…
You are a Poet
and that

is just what we do.

--------------

.

This is what Denise and I shared most.

As to say,

I wrote, he wrote, she wrote a story about it

"... like to hear it? Here it go."

.

Honored to be listed amougst this company, Thank you for the thought.

Regarding back stories, older post going back to 2005 under are TOB.

I once saw her talking about a beautiful jewel box she was making for Prince. Her design was exquisite and so detailed. I wonder if he kept it. I am sure he did and it is worthy of display. It was wonderful and very Denise. She had beautiful taste and class.

Yes was this the one she displayed on Regis and Kathy(was that her name?) I think a lot of people didn't know how much of an artist Denise was who used a lot of different artistic mediums to express herself. I heard a rumor that that gift she made for Prince inspired the song Diamonds and Pearls and she used some of her grandmother's jewlery in the project. I don't know if that is true but I wouldn't be surprised.

Denise was such a special spirit. I really admired how she turned her life around and have an appreciation for how much pain she suffered in her life and tried to turn that into something positive and use her experience as a cautionary tale. As someone who has lately deepenend my Christian faith I find her very inspirational. I think Prince tried to do the same thing but unfourtantly he was in too much pain and trapped in a prison of fame. Prince's and Denise's relationship/friendship always seemed very deep to me and when I heard she passed I immediatly was worried about Prince (and I hadn't been following him closely at the time) and I looked on the internet to find out if he publicly responded. I just had a bad feeling in my gut when that happened, ofcourse I had no idea what was about to ultimatliy happen. sad

They were two very awesome people who both made such an impact on my life. I hope they both are both finally at peace up there. smile

To Toban: Thank you for sharing and giving us a glimpse of who Denise was through pictures, poems, excerpts of her unreleased BIOV, and your memories. As someone said up thread, it does help to keep her memory alive.

So cool to see Toban appreciated for what he has shared with us.

We have learned about Denise as a person outside of her Vanity persona.

I never knew she: was an artist who displayed and sold her work, sculpted, recorded prior to Prince, stayed in touch with Prince for years after 1984 etc.

.

It is great to learn of her as a person. I have also enjoyed the poems shared from him and from her.

.

I hope you continue to share when you can. Thank you.
