Thanks so much, stimuziqlvr!! Yes, I am aware of the special issue of the Journal of African American Studies dedicated to Prince. Indeed, several of the articles, many of which could be expanded to book-length, are on my reading list. Thanks again! heart

Fly, did you see the September 2017 issue of the Journal of African American Studies?

Latin posted the info before Christmas and the download links were removed for a few weeks, however, the links appear to be back up. You can pick and choose which articles are of interest as each has its own link.

I know it's not a book but this is a respected journal that chose to dedicate an entire issue to Prince, so I wanted to make sure that you knew about it.

Happy Reading! biggrin

I think Kim Berry's Glam Slam event is totally different from Mayte's Q & A Stageit. Totally. She is providing a service. The woman was Prince's personal stylist for almost three decades. They will be doing hair, make-up, eyelashes, etc. These are services that women (and men) pay for all the time. That is vastly different than Mayte putting on a Stageit where she is charging an unlimited number of people from around the world (via the internet) $25 for a Q & A session ABOUT PRINCE (not that it would be any better if was just ONE person). She's like, "On Prince, I'll dish...but pay me bish!!"

Kim is using her VOCATION to provide a service to Prince fams who want to get glammed up by P's stylist...and her services are not cheap. And, why shouldn't she charge a deposit???? She truly has a limited number of available slots, so the deposit discourages no-shows. That is different from the Stageit marketing tactic of saying that a small number of tickets are available, only to continue to add more as each batch sells out.

Lastly, as a bibliophile, depending on the content of the book, I don't see anything wrong with SOME books. I love the photo books. I would even love to see books that shed light on his early life and career...or those that paint a portrait of the man behind the purple veil. But, I don't like tell-alls about his love life and I don't want to know how big his eggplant was or any of that business, if you know what I mean. Fam speculation, like here on The Org, is one thing, but that still leaves the mystery intact.

What's missing, IMHO, are well-researched SCHOLARLY books on Prince Rogers Nelson. I think there will be a wave of those in coming years.

I don't believe that she has auctioned off anything. Owen Husney had some stuff in that same auction, Prince threatened to sue the auction house over Owen's things, NOT Mayte's. The auction house got scared and pulled everything Prince from the auction. So nothing of Mayte's was sold at that time, and I do not think she has participated in an auctions since.

I'm not blaming either Prince or Mayte exclusively for the way things turned out between them. There's 2 sides to a failed marriage. I'm also not a Mayte hater, but based on what I've seen and read about them I can see why Prince cheated. Mayte essentially left him and moved to Spain (and maybe he created an environment where she needed a break from him). What did she think that he would do? After reading The Most Beautiful, I think that if Mayte had moved back to Minneapolis, M2 would have been sent back to Canada. In her book, Mayte states that when she went to meet Prince while he was on tour in California, that he was sick from some pills and asked her to throw the remaining pills away, which she did. Then he asks her to never leave him again. The next day she leaves to go house hunting in Spain. I don't understand why she left, if she wanted to be with him.

Anyway, if I decide to participate in that StageIt Q&A, I would love to ask her the following:

1) Why did you go back to Spain after he asked you to never leave again?

2) What was the purpose of the phony annulment papers (I would have pretended that I was going to sign and then tore them up wink )?

3) What did you know about Prince's substance abuse problem and when?

A part of me suspects that the annulment papers where apease M2 for the time being.

One other thing that I find a bit odd is that I was watching a press conference that Prince gave in Spain, in '98 (I believe) and Mayte was there also. One of the questions that a reporter asked was regarding Prince having bought a house in Spain. You can tell that he was totally surprised by the question, like wanting to know where did the reporter get that info from? Mayte chimes in and says that "we're looking for a house" while she is trying to calm Prince down by rubbing on his shoulder. So my question is, did Prince know that Mayte wanted a house in Spain because based on his response, he was totally in the dark about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhS6IL9Ojao (at the 12:08 mark)

I said:

"He set himself up for Mayte to have to rely on her relationship with him in order to make money by contriving the "annulment" and running off with another woman (Manuela), and then offering her a crappy divorce settlement (the Marabella house and all of its contents)."

and

"one of her biggest assets is that she's Prince's ex-wife."

.

By assets, I'm talking marketability or ways to make money.

.

I did not intend to suggest/say that Mayte had no other way to make money than relying on her status as his ex-wife. No, Mayte is talented, intelligent, and quite capable of making a living for herself. However, people get upset about her going on Hollywood Exes and writing her book when Prince didn't, to my knowledge, do much to prevent these situations from occurring. I was really focusing more on Prince that on Mayte when I wrote "He set himself up for...."

.

See, Prince can't have it both ways. He can't do his wife dirty by cheating on her and making her feel like a stranger in her own home, give her a flimsy divorce settlement (which she didn't care about because she wanted him, not the divorce), and expect her to go on living her life as though she was never married to him. He was her first love. He wrote in a letter to her in the mid 1990s stating "Eye will never leave u" over 15 times (pp. 134-134, The Most Beautiful). In another letter, he wrote "If they're not your babies, eye ain't havin' none!" (p. 179, The Most Beautiful). He wrote "The One" for her, and asks her to direct the video in 1998, then in the same year, contrives an "annulment" with no legal or religious validity.

.

So he set himself up the possibility of Mayte her using her status as his ex-wife. First, he acted in a way (e.g., cheating) that caused her to seek a divorce that she did not want. Then, he didn't offer her much in the divorce settlement and she didn't ask for more because she wanted him and she also felt beat down by the whole situation.

.

Due to the cost of selling their house in Spain, she came away from that marriage with very little money. At the time of their divorce, she had spent the previous 9 years or so interacting with him in some way...first as a friend, then as a member of the NPG, muse, girlfriend, fiancee, and/or wife. This doesn't mean she had to use her status as his ex-wife to make money or that she had no choice but to use that status as his ex-wife to her advantage. However, that status as his ex-wife exists...which is why, if he cared so much about his privacy, he could have protected his privacy by paying her to keep quiet.

As for saying that she had no choice but to rely on her ex- husbands coattails 15 years after her divorce because he left her no money and forced her into divorce, that's a statement that irks me. Most of us don't have a millionaire's coattails to ride on and most of us can afford babysitters. She's a big girl. she should have gotten more in the settlement but I imagine Prince had a hard time believing that his home wouldn't sell in Spain (a famous rock star's house would normally sell) and maybe he thought she wasn't trying hard enough. I don't begrudge her selling his left-over stuff, but I don't think selling it in March 2016 and then later saying she had been worried about his health since January makes her sound very geniune.

As for Prince not wanting Mayte anymore, the reality is that we don't know entirely what he wanted. We only know that he was throwing himself into a religion she wanted no part of. Maybe he still wanted her but the condition was that she had to join his religion. If he was being brainwashed by Larry or had an overzealous conviction to join a religion that he thought could save himself and his wife, , his head was obviously in a very shaky place. Maybe he thought there was a chance she would eventually decide on her own to join his faith and their relationship would be hunky-dory but just in case, he had another girl he was spending time with in order to share his faith with (thus the annulment and 'platonic' romantic relationship with Manuela) . Prince had his own version of events and his own perspectives and I imagine his take was quite emotionally complicated. I don't know if he was just feeding her shit or if his reasons for annulment were just so weird and convolutated that they were hard to understand...(like he was testing her and if she failed to join his religion on her own, he would know that they weren't meant to be.) Hard to say. But none of his implies that he didn't love her or even Manuela in his own way. All it implies is that he probably had some issues, was stubborn, a bit selfish and stuck in a delusion.

The above in red caught my eye.
He didn’t have anymore.
I don’t believe there were any pregnancies after that. And that includes with his 2nd wife.

Lol, I think Mayte was house-hunting before he arrived in Marabella, and didn’t tell him about it. lol

That's true.He may have felt it would be awkward meeting with her in that setting.

Yes I find it weird that he left. Let his bandmate down. He couldn’t muster to perform in front of her. Wtheck!!!

.

I think Prince just could not deal with Mayte. The interview he gave with Paper Mag, back in 1999 was very telling about how he felt with the loss of his son and marriage. Sound like he was trying to rationalize the end of his marriage and looking for a way out, imo.

.

A lot is virtual in the Artist's world, where fading backdrops of past lives fold neatly into psychic origami boxes. He shows no signs of regret, depression, maladjustment or freakishness from cutting off his past life. In fact, he is rooted in a self-awareness and humor that are absolutely charming.

.

His life seems to be distinctly separated into B.M. and A.M.—before meeting his wife, Mayte, and after Mayte. For instance, when discussing the machinations of record companies, the Artist interrupts the flow to ask if he can interject a personal anecdote about his marriage. (As if I'm going to say no.) The word in the media had been that after a total bliss package of a marriage, they were getting divorced.

.

What the Artist goes on to say is that wanting a monopoly on his lady had become the marital version of owning someone else's masters. From what he says, and from what others say, theirs has been an intensely romantic relationship, a kind of you-and-me-against-the- world vibe. But both felt it was starting to get weird. "We were drawing energy from strange people around us. Strange words and numbers, bad contracts. We had to step away from that," he explains. For a person who still uses "4" in place of "for" in song lyrics, the relationship between numbers and contracts—both personal and financial— weaves complicated, interrelated secret messages.

.

He traces the origin of the marriage contract to Pontius Pilate organizing the consensus to crucify Jesus, but the short version of the story is that it was screwing up the Artist's world. He describes a relationship that some might categorize as vaguely co-dependent—for a while he couldn't even give an interview without Mayte present. "I could not have sat in a room alone with some- one like you" (meaning young, female and not totally butt), he tells me. Relying on someone so deeply, not to mention feeling possessive, jealous and the other emotions that go with having someone be "yours," was dangerous and, more to his point, deluded.

.

Does all this mean they've transcended the physical boundaries of the marriage bond too? The other question, post-"divorce," is monogamy. Considering his reputation as an international lover, one wonders, is the Artist good to the yoni? "They always exaggerate," he says quite demurely, alluding to the baker's dozen of high-profile women he's been teamed with in the press throughout his career.

.

You either didn’t read her book, read it out of context or didn’t understand what you were reading. They decided together to buy a second home away from Minneapolis so they could work on having another baby and to get away from all the tabloid gossip about them being negligent parents and potentially liable for homicide (that part wasn’t in the book). Secondly, she was back and forth between Minneapolis and Spain. She says that in the book. Lastly, when she met in LA, they’d already had their home in Spain. She didn’t leave him to go house hunting. He told her to go back and he’d meet her there once he finished the last few dates of the tour.

Lol, I think Mayte was house-hunting before he arrived in Marabella, and didn’t tell him about it.

You didn’t read her book either, I guess. Also, Prince knows how to play the media well. There was no way of getting around them buying a home in Spain without people knowing. Also, the next night, he asked Mayte to translate to the audience at his concert about them buying a home in Marbella.

If she has not auctioned off anything, it was not for lack of trying. That much is certain.

.

Yes, and she had a FB page exclusively for the things she was auctioning off. If I recall correctly, this was just a month or two before Prince passed. sad

However, that status as his ex-wife exists...which is why, if he cared so much about his privacy, he could have protected his privacy by paying her to keep quiet.

.

.

I always thought that Prince seemed a bit uncomfortable during that interview in Spain. His mind seemed to be elsewhere.

There are probably some rings, earrings, maybe a necklace or 2 that she eventually may dispose of.

True. There was a ring that she wore on her left middle finger when they were together that I haven't seen again. She may have a few clothing items as well, like Kiran Sharma and probably some hand written notes too.

But, just because Prince gave Andy gifts doesn't mean that she will one day sell or auction them. That is quite the ugly non sequitur. Moreover, I think that suggestion is the worst kind of speculation. Man!! Andy just can't get a break from some on the Org.

I think I also remember her holding a garage sale where she sold some items from her time with him in 2013. I don't think she sold any of his belongings then however.

He whispered in her ear while she translated. Basically, he said they had just bought a house there, asked for everyone to respect their privacy and if they did, they’d be there forever. He also said he wanted them to take care of Mayte and he’d take care of them. Then she starts gushing about how much he loves her.
