For clarification purposes, Sarah Pina was chosen by the organizers of the symposium to present “‘Tears go here, tears go there’: Mayte Garcia’s The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince and US Latina authorship”.

I hope she doesn’t”t start talking about being soulmates with Prince. She disproved that once and for all hanging with the Kardashians.

Thanks Latin. But this is exactly why I say the choices made are questionable, some of the content that will be included just seems odd.

Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end nod

I wouldn't mind a symposium about Latina voices, women voices, and feminism but have they forgotten that these events are a celebration of Prince's life,. ALso, I think her voice would be more respected if it didn't rely on her connection to Prince so much and she was not a regular on reality shows about her connection to the men in her life. . Geez, I am weary how this might go. This discussion will present Prince as the oppressor and she finally stands up to him and differientates herself from him even though she loves him and it ends their relationship . In a different context, it might be okay but late April is supposed to be a "celebration" of his life in Minnesota..not a celebration of Mayte , her Latin backgroud, and her ability to use Prince as a "vehicle" for her "agency" against his will. God, I am weary. A bigger statement about her ability to be her own woman would be to do a presentation of her book (about coming of age and female agency) not on a long weekend sold by its association to the MAN in her life and if it were about her own accomplishments once she left Prince...not her own accomplishements once he croaked and due to his croaking.. There is some absurd kind of irony to this stuff. Plus, did she not have a ghost writer??

Penny, if something comes up and you find you can get there, I'll encourage you by saying that the trip from Missouri is not that bad. My trip from STL is about two hours longer b/c I have to get over to I-35, but coming from KC, your're already there.

I realize extended car travel may be a challenge for your husband (I've been rear-ended three times, so my cervical spine can sympathize), but maybe you guys can get there.

Just offering some words of encouragement nod

PennyPurple said: Check out the abstract by a panelist, chosen by the organizers, to present at the "PRINCE FROM MINNEAPOLIS: A SYMPOSIUM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA" entitled "Sarah Pina, “‘tears go here, tears go there’: Mayte Garcia’s The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince and US Latina authorship”: "Within the kaleidoscope-esque life that was Prince’s, the Puerto Rican-born belly dancing muse of beauty known as Mayte Garcia was his first and only in many ways: his first wife, the only woman to bear his child, and the only woman to stay true to her name — despite Prince’s insistence on changing it, as he did to many women in his life, to name a few. The latter alone is very much representative of what I argue is a definitive Third World feminist memoir as Garcia tells her story on her terms, in her own words, by way of literary techniques characteristic of US Latina authors, while also peeling back and unpacking several complex layers and issues common to US Hispanic literature in general, broaching on intersectional matters of social class, racial discrimination, language, gender, and sexuality, all of which are introduced within the first few pages, and are thereafter woven throughout the text. Garcia writes in the introduction that she hopes those closest to him will eventually tell their stories, too, and that a music scholar “will write a book that spans the incredible depth and breadth of Prince’s work” but that “This is not that book” (8). Indeed, this is not that book; it is a much more profound testimony of a woman of color in the United States and her coming of age story in the shadow of the Purple One. The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince is often marketed as a leisurely read; however, I posit that it merits the same if not more analysis that she infers is better suited for another more “scholarly” text, as it is much more than a simple tale of a love story between her and one of the most enigmatic international celebrities of our time. Ultimately, I demonstrate that Garcia’s memoir is a poignant and carefully crafted composition with which Garcia carves her own female agency, asserting her distinctive voice to the many underrepresented voices of women of color as a Latina growing up in the United States, all by way of the unlikely vehicle of the charismatic, magical musical genius known as Prince."

Is she thinking about putting out another book?

Songs that she knows of in the Vault.

Did Prince like her mom and dad, did they ever hang out?

Which of Prince's siblings did she know best?

The other questions I have probably wouldn't be answered.

what questions would you all ask her if you could?

I would ask her:

Why did you spend so much time in Spain from 1998-2000 given the principle of prince's top woman always being in Minneapolis?

.

Can you provide a comprehensive list of all of the songs that Prince/prince told you that he wrote for/about you and Amiir? Can you confirm that the song "Until U're in My Arms Again" is about Amiir?

.

Did Prince know that you were writing a book, and if so, did he ever express how he felt about it?

.

Did you have a bridal shower?

.

Did you have a baby shower for Amiir?

.

What was Amiir's full name?

.

Can you provide more details on how your husband was able to convince your OBGYN to sell him the heart monitor? (I love this story and would love to know additional details.)

.

Did you ever meet Prince's mother?

.

Did you and prince ever attend church together? How did it come to be that you were married at a Methodist church when, as I understand it, neither of you were Methodist?

.......

These are some questions that I wonder, but probably would not ask her due to the sensitive nature of the questions.

.

Did you and your husband ever second-guess or regret the decision to remove life support from Amiir instead of going forward with the tracheostomy (creating an alternative airway)? (I am a special education teacher and in my current job working in preschool early intervention, I conduct along with other professionals evaluations of children with a variety of suspected delays and disabilities and write IEP goals for those children who are eligible for early intervention services. My department has a medically fragile team that evaluates and writes IEPs for children who are medically fragile.) My reason for wondering about this issue has to do with my professional background and from reading a number of medical publications regarding outcomes for children who are born with Pfeiffer Syndrome Type 2. From reading these articles, a tracheostomy is essential for a child with Pfeiffer Syndrome Type 2 to have any chance of survival outside of a hospital.

.

I have heard that prince bought thousands of dollars of medical equipment for Amiir. Can you confirm that he did this?

.

Do you have any photos of your son?

.

How did your husband believe that Amiir would come back?

Good questions. Did she ever meet his mother? She lived in Minnesota. His mother was at their wedding. She talked about his mother at one of her book signings last year.

Hard questions? I wouldn’t say so. Most of the questions were light. She was funny. She told a funny story of her mother coming in town and Prince wanted to take her mother bowling. He thought for sure he was going to beat her mother in bowling but he didn’t. She said her mother pulled out her bowling gloves to Prince’s surprise. After her mother won, he said he didn’t want to play with her anymore.
