Mayte & The NPG

I was lucky enough to see the NPG last summer but unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the show as much as I'd have liked and would like to see them again. I've looked on their website for upcoming tour dates and it got me thinking about Mayte.

She was a member of the NPG and was obviously a huge influence and important part of Princes' life but I see no mention of her on their website whereas many other former members have been.

I'll be honest and say a lot of Mayte's dancing left me cold. I always thought she was and still is an attractive woman, her ballet was beautiful and her belly dancing mesmerising to watch but I'm not sure what she could contribute now. For me, her dancing for Prince was of a time and I wouldn't be interested in seeing any of it re-created, not even the sword dancing for 7. Perhaps she could sing back up? Perform a couple of her songs within the set?

Of course it's possible that she has been invited and declined but if not,,,,

Should Mayte be invited to join the NPG? (As a performer, not what you think of her on a personal level).

Not really related, well kind of as I'm discussing the NPG, just wanted to say that I think Morris Hayes is SUCH a good looking man!

I don't know, she does have her Belly dance classes, and she's doing good with that.

It would be nice to see her with the NPG again, but it's not really necessary.

She has too many other focuses now, her classes which tour to different cities, plus her animal rescue work is year round plus she has a daughter. I don’t think she has been invited or asked or that even was an idea to have her in the band, I don’t know why it would be, since her dancing revolves around Prince, when she sang she was at the mic with him. So throwing her up there to do moves and sing background makes no sense.

Morris Hayes mentioned her recently in a Facebook Live. He wants to invite her to dance with them on a few shows. She lives in Vegas though, is raising a child alone and has other obligations.

Mayte did the long intro opening of 7 during the Official Prince Tribute in 2016. I enjoyed it.

No, not in any capacity. Everyone involved with NPG now is a musician. Unless I missed something, she is not. If I go see NPG, it's because I want to see a musical performance from those involved.

She could probably do 'dance' expressions to songs where Prince's vocals are too much for them to actually have someone do the lyrics

I know Mayte is busy with her child/animals/dancing and as someone pointed out no, she's not a musician but I do think there is a role for her in the NPG if that's what they and she wanted. Prince thought she was a good enough singer to put an album out so she could easily sing back up, shake a tambourine or tap a cowbell.

Generally speaking I was always indifferent to Mayte and still am but it's good that she's been acknowledged by Morris on F/B, I wouldn't know as I don't follow social media and only pick up bits and bobs from this site.

Anyway, these were just my curiosities and musings on the whole NPG inclusion.

I hope that the NPG will carry on performing for a long time to come and I'll get the chance to see them again. I may even see Mayte as a guest appearance tapping a cowbell with a sword on her head at the same time!

U mean finger cymbals, look at the picture above, those are a part of her dancing, and various songs

No, I meant a tambourine and/or cowbell.

As well as the use of finger cymbals while dancing I'm sure she's capable of either if she was to sing back up.

the tamborine probably works best with the dances

Mayte was the best dancer Prince ever had.
Hands down.
She’s also classically-taught, and Prince respected that hugely, I am sure.

She can still do the sword stuff, and she’s still beautiful.

Her dancing, to me, fit what P was doing musically in the 90s, perfectly. She may have and probably did inspire some of his sound then, not just lyrics. Like he always did with those whom he worked, bouncing off each other.

He seemed throughout his life to have the right people around him at the right time, and they helped develop his sound at any given time I think too.

PS: I still TOTALLY love watching her moves when dancing with P. She is SO good.

I thought it was nice that she danced at the Celebration.I remember when Prince was living in LA in 2009,Mayte was doing belly dancing shows at a few clubs there and people were thinking that she might join Prince onstage for a song or two.Dr Funkenberry attended one of her shows and posted about it on his site, leading some to think it might happen. When Prince had Lala Escarzega dance in the Screwdriver lyric video in 2013 some thought he had used old footage of Mayte. Her dancing and look was very similar in the video.

She was the only one to take my attention from Prince in concert. I saw her in the Act 1 and Gold Experience tours. I also saw her and Prince perform "The One" together at MSG in 1998. She's really good and so graceful. Different experience than seeing her on a video.

For me that was Cat, she was awesome and captivating. Mayte did nothing for me all the many shows I saw her perform with Prince. Diamond And Pearl (who performed at a lot of shows where Mayte did too) were a lot more fun for me to watch than she was. But I started to like her as a person from what I read about her in the last few years so I guess I wouldn't mind seeing her with the NPG. And it might even happen if this one is about her.....

No interest in seeing any dancers with NPG. I liked Cat, Diamond and Pearl, The Twinz alright but honestly, the music was all I really cared about. Well, Prince too of course. But I have nod desire to see that happen again and although I'd love to see NPG if they come close enough to me, adding in any dancer will make me stay away. Just not interested in that.

Doesn't Mayte have MS? I know a couple of people who have that disease and one thing that causes their condition to flare up is stress. Raising a kid in itself is stressful and Mayte has the belly dancing classes going on too, so maybe she was asked to participate with the NPG, but declined mainly because of health and parenting 2nd.

I don’t think they will add any permanent dancers...no room on the stage. The Twin r with New Power Soul now.

After watching Mayte's performance of Ain't No Place on DrFunkenberry's Youtube channel I'm not sure she would be the best choice. If they decided to include dancers Lala would be ideal if she wanted to do it.She said on Twitter yesterday that Prince was planning to use her as the main dancer for the NPG and she's probably the most talented that he worked with next to Misty.I was impressed by the clips on her FB of her dancing to some of his songs and she said that P loved her choreography.

The NPG has 10 people on stage already..way too much going on. Prince is not here, no need for any dancer. Lala just another one trying to get a piece of purple pie...

True.I was just saying that she would probably be a better fit than Mayte, although I think her performance at the Tribute was beautifully done. She is also friends with Morris Hayes so it's not out of the realm of possibility. She probably would not want to dance without Prince though.
