Nah, he'll be fine. You can post covers on YouTube without legal trouble, the legal trouble comes when you post Prince's (or anyone's) recorded masters without permission, even if it's in the background in a lot of cases.

Not every single one, so that's not a rule of thumb.

Okay, let me clarify. Warner will not go after them for this because masters are not involved. YouTube will not automatically pull it for the same reason.

.

Whoever runs Prince's publishing (hint: it's his estate) could issue a takedown request unless The Revolution got a mechanical AND a sync license (hint: they didn't).

.

YouTube actually does have deals with several publishers to keep uploaders out of legal trouble by distributing some of the ad revenue from video views to the songwriter. I doubt they have that with Prince.

.

But, I fully doubt Prince's estate will issue a takedown request to The Revolution for the same reason they're not going after Sheila for her use of the Prince symbol.

You do not have to clarify anything. The estate can issue a takedown and YOUTUBE will take it down. It has happend before and it has not happened yet because the estate does not know about it.

Trust me that can change with the push of a button.

The Revolution are the musicians playing on the song, on her album.

There is another song on her album that has the Family musicians playing on it too.

Jill sang over the backing track of the original. Which was mostly played by the Revolution. They both have the song, as far as I'm concerned. More than, say, Sheila with America..

.

Regardless, I like the version. I hope the Revolution will tour in Europe. The music that the Revolution made where they had the most influence on Prince (however much or little it was) was received much more enthousiastically in Europe than the US... why not come to us?

I think because Prince is dead, they are talking in a present tense of the song.
