Why does some people think "Call My Name" is about Manuela?

Anyone who thinks that, "Call My Name", is about Manuela will argue that it's about her, because it mentions the street they lived on in Toronto. However, has anyone actually looked up the spelling?

Toronto Address: 61 Bridle Path

Lyrics in Song: "But it let me know that my name had never really been spoken before, before the day I've carried you through that bridal path door."

Two different spellings. Two different words.

I wonder why Prince would publicly say the song was about her when it wasn't then. 1f914.png

However, maybe I'm wrong and the song was still about her. I'm just curious about what others think about this.

PrinceVault probably made an error. It happens.

This website is the only one I found who had it right!:

Not unusual for Prince to play with words and spellings..

In this instance it might have been a very deliberate play

to highlight their actual marriage

Do you have an official source that says the lyric in the song is officially spelled "Bridle"?

You might have viewed the following vid (approx 14 secs to 34 secs) because he publicly claims Manuela was the inspiration for the song. This should clear up any confusion. At least, I sincerely hope it does.

Prince used a bit of wordsmithery with his lyrics and how they are interpreted is the listener's choice, but I am going to take his word regarding his intent when writing songs.

Prince said it...and yet you reject that for your need to be right apparently. How odd.

It's a play on words with the homonym of "bridle" and "bridal." Plus, Prince said it was about her. Case closed.

Honestly...this place, anymore. rolleyes

My need to be right?? If that was the case, then I wouldn't have said, "However, maybe I'm wrong and the song was still about her." Although Prince said the song was about her while they were married, I've heard from many people that during his court deposition he told the court that "Call My Name" wasn't about Manuela and he could prove it, which is why I was curious about others thoughts on the song.

Your thread posed the question: Why do some people think ''Call My Name" is about Manuela?

Provided above is a link to a video record of Prince stating: "I wrote the song for her."

Your original argument was that the evidence that people would rely upon was his apparent reference to the name of the road where they lived.

However, the first hand evidence supplied was Prince himself saying that the song was about her.

(It was also pointed out that Prince was likely making reference to the Toronto address, by way of a play on words, which was a very common lyrical device that he used troughout his career.)

Set against this, you are saying that, despite Prince himself going on record as saying that the song was about Manuela, you have "heard from many people that during his court deposition he told the court that "Call My Name" wasn't about Manuela and he could prove it".

As the evidence has been supplied that Prince himself stated that the song was about Manuela, rather than relying on hearsay from "many people", can you simply provide copies of the court depositions to which you refer which clearly say that the song wasn't about her?

Did he say different in later years though?

If I had come across some evidence to clearly contradict his earlier statement, then I would have provided it. That's why I was asking for copies of the alleged depositions ... or any similar statement with the same evidential weight as his televised statement, if you have it perhaps?
