What is Ryan Waters connection to Prince/NPG?

I’ve read several recent interviews with Liv Warfield and Nancy Wilson. They seem to leave the impression Ryan Waters was someone Prince found or that he was somehow connected to NPG? I know he worked with Liv Warfield but what is his backstory with Prince? I don’t remember ever seeing them on stage together.

Like musical stepparents, Wilson brought to the project three current members of Heart — keyboardist Chris Joyner, bassist Dan Rothchild and drummer Ben Smith. Warfield recruited guitarist Ryan Waters, whom she’d gotten to know while in the New Power Generation, Prince’s backing band.

They named themselves Roadcase Royale, a title inspired by the combination of the scuffed instrument containers from Heart and the aristocracy of Prince — a “cool contrast between the royalty of the Prince people joining forces with the old road dogs,” said Wilson.

Earlier this year, Rolling Stone premiered the live performance video of their debut single “Get Loud” saying, “…the band builds a funky, nimble groove, led by Warfield's soulful belting and the acoustic/electric guitar attack of Wilson and Prince protégé Ryan Waters.”

Later that year, Ryan relocated to Seattle, WA and began working with vocalist/songwriter, Liv Warfield as her lead guitarist and musical director. Liv is a member of Prince’s iconic band, New Power Generation and Ryan began performing with Liv and other NPG members during their downtime. In August of 2013, the band had a week-long residency in New York City at City Winery. The shows featured sets of original music from Liv and fellow NPG member, Shelby J along with extensive sets of Prince material. Prince himself performed on two nights, the last of which quickly became the stuff of legend after the show lasted past 6am.

In October of that year, Ryan joined Liv in the studio to start work on her album entitled, The Unexpected. Ryan co-produced and played guitar on the entire album which is executive produced by, Prince. He also wrote all lyrics and music for a song entitled, Black Bird. The album was released in March of 2014 to overwhelming critical acclaim and the band recently performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote the release.

So did he perform with Prince at City Winery or was he just performing with Liv, Shelby and some of the NPG Hornz?

23 (am) August 2013; New York City Winery, New York, New York, USA

"The show started off with the 'semi-NPG' with Tyrone Hendrix on drums and Ryan Waters on guitar and without Prince and 3rdEyeGirl. They joined in an hour into the show with Hannah Ford replacing Tyrone Hendrix and Donna Grantis replacing Ryan Waters."

OK so basically just a band for Liv when she was promoting her record and not really members of NPG.
