Great quote from Sheena Easton

The world of music was forever changed the day he picked up his guitar. His talent was breathtaking, his heart was kind, and all of us have been blessed to have had a glimpse into this sweet and magical soul.” Sheena Easton

I always thought that Sheena would have been a perfect co-star for Prince in UTCM smile

She did not seem to have that WASPY rich girl vibe though. I do think Kristin was not a good choice though. I am one of those who totally love UTCM in Black and White and do not want to see it in color AT ALL.

Sheena always had kind of a pouty valley girl vibe going, even though she is from Scotland.

Kristen is a wonderful actress but she came off entirely too worldly for that part. She seemed older than Prince and she wasn't. A more innocent actress (but with some spunk) and a more naturalistic approach to love scenes from Prince (visually in particular, who makes love in full lace and makeup??) would have fixed some of the chemistry issues. They had chemistry when they argued but not soo much when her hard veneer supposedly melted. It didn't seem as convincing.

another benefit to having Sheena co-star in UTCM: she's a singer,so Prince could have written a few songs for her to record.....songs that would be coming from her character Mary Sharon's point of view.

Tracy died soon after a long fought civil war

just after I wiped away his last tear

hmmm "Miss Understood" is a fun uptempo track that she could have recorded, too

I love Sheena but not feeling her as Mary. I woukd not buy her as the wealthy socialite but the thing is I did not buy Kristin Scott Thomas either.

Prince originally wanted Madonna (!) to play that role. Then he asked his fiance,Susannah Melvoin,to do it but that apparently didn't work out.

I do not think he asked Susannah because I cannot imagine her turning him down.

Well, he did. And she didn't turn him down. Aamof, here is an interview with Susannah Melvoin - April 2013: http://beautifulnightschi...-with.html ....and here is her direct quote: "We were on our way to Paris to hunker down and study the script and get that all sorted out. Some other things went down and the next we were doing was me not being in the lead of the film. Which I'm grateful for. It was a blessing in disguise."

After all, if one declares historical info should be accurate for a former ex, shouldn't it be accurate for all former exes?

Brilliant answer to the question by Susannah. Saying it was a blessing might mean to most people that she avoided being in a shit film but to others it might mean that she is being humble about her acting ability. Most people are going to assume the former. She just saved face by her vagueness. Not hating on her for it. Who would want to admit they got chucked from a film project because they couldn't act. Iread in other sources that they couldn't use her due to her inability to act.

I do not think UTCM was a crappy film. I love it. It is entertaining from start to finish. It is pretty to look at , Prince is pretty to look at and the one liners are classic!

I like UTCM for its humor and bromance. the ending sucks however and the chemistry is not there enough between P and Kristen. THat being said, my statement was not about my opinion about the film. Its about the critical response which was bad and I imagine Susannah might have known that when she called it a blessing in disguise not being cast.

UTCM is a good movie with some truly funny scenes, but let's be honest...it was a commercial dud...a major flop. It's interesting that Prince would consider Madonna and Susannah for the Mary Sharon role.Neither of these ladies have that French accent, which was needed.

I never heard he wanted Madonna to play that role. Madonna was for Graffiti Bridge(1987)

Whether Madonna was intended or not he got a little Madonna look alike in there anyway lol and she is Italian Garance Tosello

.

Susannah would have worked if the movie was more like Purple Rain. Meaning also the movie would have been more successful if there were band scenes in different form(1) and if Prince didn't try to direct it(2) if he alternative ending was used(3)

.

Well the movie was originally going to have a French female lead after Prince's choices were removed. But then when choosing Kristen, they made the family English. They didn't have french accents.

But I do enjoy the most overall. it is after he falls in love and falls out with Tricky that it get's messy and I get distracted.
Prince & Jerome just couldn't carry the movie. Killer music though.
I think the first half of the movie was pretty good though(original director)
the opening at the Venus de Milo spot playing An Honest Man was really good and set me up.

Has she ever talked about recording/writing with Prince or the background of Sugar Walls?

Back in the day she explained how it all came about.

I remember when Sheena first came onto the scene in 1981,singing songs like "Morning Train" and "For Your Eyes Only".She was so wholesome and pure.Who knew that,a few years later, she would hook up with Prince and start singing songs about her vagina ("Sugar Walls")? lol

the more I think about it....

if Sheena was the co-star in UTCM,there could have been a fun sub-plot about Mary wanting to be a singer biggrin thus, songs like "Miss Understood" and "Mia Bocca" could have been featured with vocals by Sheena, lol
