You know, it is possible (since they were both around at about the same time) that Prince gave it to both of them. He could have told Denise that it was about her and that it was her song, but then (knowing how Prince could change his mind with a blink of an eye) told W&L that he had written it about Susannah. And if that is the case, then neither of them are lying, neither of them are making things up, they are both relaying the truth as they saw it and was told by Prince. Prince was a HUGE player and it seemed to be a part of his M.O. "This song is about you (for you)". I'm sure that statement made many a woman swoon right into his arms.

[Edited 8/18/17 17:51pm]

It was mentioned Vanity used to play it preparing to go on stage during the Triple Threat Tour since Prince gifted it to her.

Susannah was not around during that time.

How many tapes of music did Prince give away to people, not thinking later on that these songs would become 'boots' and people would trade gift or sell them.
Did Prince date other women when he was with Vanity?

I LOVED the Prince & Vanity chemistry. I thought they were beautiful together. And I love the romance of the story of Vanity appearing at the club and meeting Prince(like Apollonia did sorta in Purple Rain) but in general Vanity was wresting with some demons, Prince had some demons and the combination wasn't good for her.

It is said alleged noted that the song was written late 82, so I would say around the end of the 1999 tour, that he gave it to her.

The song was noted by Susan Rogers mid 83 when she joined Princes camp prior. She heard or had notes it was about Vanity.

Vanity left Prince early 84.

Prince and the Revolution work on it further in 84. Lisa singing co lead with Prince.
People connected it to the Dream Factory album.

It was later allegedly going to be a part of the Roadhouse Garden album, when Prince want to reunite the Revolution in 1999.

Would you say 'inspiration' of the song could evolve over that time period? Yet initially still be about Vanity? Yet Vanity would seriously note care if it was in 1999. And Prince probably would not be thinking in that moment 'this song is about Vanity'

Was Denise Matthews going by the name Vanity in 1999-2000 still?

But that's not my point, Vashtix. Heck, Prince could have written it about his Wonderful Ass, and told Vanity it was for her. My point is, Prince could have really written it about anyone, but then turned around and said to Denise, "I wrote this song about you. My gift to you." And then a few years later told W&L, "I wrote this about Susannah." (I know Jill has stated she was in the studio with Prince when he was recording it, but that doesn't exclude Prince telling Wendy that he recorded it for Susannah since it had never been released. She wouldn't know when it was written for sure, and would accept Prince at his word.) Prince could have recycled many songs in that way, no effort needed, song hasn't been released, and if they weren't familiar with it, they would believe him when he said, "I wrote this about you." And if he did that, then it doesn't make Wendy's recollections wrong, she's telling the truth as she knows it from what Prince has said, and it doesn't make Jill wrong, because she's telling the truth as she knows it from what Prince said while they were recording.

Benni, this is what we have been trying to say for the last 2 months

Thanks u.

lol Two months!?!? And you're still going strong with it? Nah, I'm ready to let it go now. They are going to believe what they want to believe, think what they want to think, and there is no sense in trying to get them to see another side because they just don't want to.

Seriously it does not matter who Prince wrote any song for. What matters is he wrote the song. Prince was a genius.

.

Vanity, Susannah, M1, M2 and the others it does not really matter . Prince was the one who was gifted with the lyrics and the music inside himself that he shared that we can even have these meaningless discussions.

.

I will never tire of the variations of the songs- he gifted us with for the ages.

No matter who, what , when.

.

I am just grateful we have the songs.

So think what you want to think and I will think what I want think. Oh you have no idea what documents or papers her brother-in-law has as he said she almost threw nothing away.

Not trying to deter the current conversation but I am thinking that since we are learning Prince and Denise were close over the decades there is much none of us know. I had no idea they were close over the decades. I have to say we have absolutely no real knowledge of many things.

Prince & Vanity communicated still. I don't think they were lovers still.

I knew for a while that Vanity & Prince stayed in touch. Not many people from that 78-88 period he did not stay in touch with. Doesn't mean he continued to write songs about Vanity.
And I would not want Prince to still be 'involved' with Vanity because it was not good for her when she was with him. It wasn't healthy for her, and she was not healthy.

I agree she was not healthy and ironic the way they seemly swapped places.

It's so sweet how so many of them really seemed to believe they were exclusive. He was an artist and an artist has to evolve and reinvent himself. Prince was friends over decades with Denise and they both evolved and changed. According to what Toban shared this week in the other thread they enjoyed one another's companionship and mused each other and Prince enjoyed her company. She was not a trying to get in the business anymore, nor was she part of a harem, nor was she trying to validate herself in to the public as the quintessential, ulitmate, forever muse. Sounds like they were just tight, close, friends who shared sensibilites and evolved and transformed over the years so Prince was no longer bad for her nor she for him. They had mellowed as most do with age.

They definitely understood each other, they obviously accepted each other as they were and it is evidently that they enjoyed each others companionship. They shared a special connection that they reserved for themselves and kept to themselves.

Exactly my point! That and the fact that just because a woman later says he wrote it about so-and-so, doesn't mean they are lying, because Prince could have told her he wrote it about so-and-so. I'm curious how many of the songs that are in question are songs that weren't officially released?? Or were released much later than when they were originally written? Because those songs then could be songs that Prince recycled between women. lol

THIS! Thank you Vashtix!

I don't see where anyone has said that they were lovers at or to the end, but with some of the responses in this thread, you would think that was said or implied. lol

Based on what Toban has shared recently, my impression has been they had evolved from the chaotic relationship they once shared to a deep, close friendship where they respected and cared for each other. Though they shared similar spiritual beliefs/ thoughts, Denise wanted nothing of his Hollywood/ rocknroll lifestyle and always mentioned how she was praying for Prince. With all her health issues, I'm willing to guess that he prayed for her too- as he did for other people in his life.

If Prince and Denise were tight friends later in life, shared camaraderie it did not take away from any of his ex-wives or women that he had been with in the past, or was with in later years.

I don't think any one is denying when the song was written, merely that it is possible that Prince recycled the song and told the next lady in the mix that it was about her. And if that is the case, then Wendy is not lying, only relaying information she believed was true because that is what she was told by Prince. And with the way Prince would do remixes of songs, it's possible that any remix he did to a song was inspired by the next lady, while the first lady inspired the first version. And, again, Prince could have written a song for his own reasons, but him, being Prince, knew that if he told a woman it was about her, she'd swoon and give him whatever he wanted. lol Personally, I think Denise did inspire the song originally, but Prince, having moved on from Denise at that time, later told Wendy it was about Susannah. It could even have been an issue in which Prince was hurt by Denise leaving and wanted to hurt her in return by giving away the song he'd told was for her, so that it would not be associated with Denise (in his mind and the minds of those around him) any more.

Right Vashtix, the song was written before Prince even met Susannah. The fact that we know this, the fact that it's been said by more than one qualified associate ( Susan Rogers, Jill Jones, Morris Hayes, and Appolonia) nullifies this whole argument... It was written for Vanity. Inspired by Vanity. Even if (as Lisa implied in the first interview) they were goofing around with the song when they recorded it, even if Prince later told Lisa it was written for Wendy and Susannah. The song was initially written for Vanity. Although to be honest with you. I don't believe Prince told Lisa the song was written for Wendy and Susannah. I choose to believe what she seemed to have implied in the first article about the goofing around thing. Have you guys paid attention to the lyrics to WA? I have. If you are a hard core fan and have been following Prince's life and music, you know darn well those lyrics were NOT intended for Wendy and Susannah... It's more along the lines of "As much as we loved we used to fight. She was very headstrong cuz she knew she was the finest woman in the world..." lol

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or asking me a serious question, but yes, I think you already know that I'm a fan of Vanity. As I know you are a fan of The Revolution/ Susannah... I've been a fan of Vanity since I was twelve years old. Why?

Yes, thank U.
This song is another example of multiple inspirations and/or the evolution of a song happens.
.
And we know there are songs that a definate 1 only inspirations.

.

It is funny how 'inspiration' of songs seem to only revolve around women in these discussions.
.
Like people will say Mutiny was about St Paul(leaving the Family) but St Paul was with Prince in the creation of the song ie he sang lead on the song.

Who is the song about?

It could be Vanity? It could be Morris Day or Jesse Johnson (Prince did call Jesse Johnsons name 'Jesse? did U give?' This was a line Morris would use during their Time shows during their 'offering basket scene'

.

So let's say Jesse Johnson is the inspiration. By the time Prince & the Revolution were performing the song in 1986 Prince would at times direct it toward the recently departed St Paul Peterson. And in 2011 when the Time & the Family & Prince were having back in forth 'play' (as well as Sheila E-her video imitating Prince after his Purple & Gold song) Prince performed a playful Mutiny in response to the Time & the Family.

.

Movie Star is another -that could be about Morris Day or Prince, but most likely Morris Day.

I think you misunderstand my post about Vanity. I'm replying to things about the later 80s when Vanity was no longer in the camp.
As I said above, "I knew for a while that Vanity & Prince stayed in touch"

I know there are team Vanity team Jill team Mayte team Susannah etc people

I'm not into that. I always loved Vanity.

When Prince was working with the Time again leading up to Graffiti Bridge, Brenda & Susan Moonsie were also in the mix and there was talk of getting Vanity 6 together, but it was noted that Vanity was not well at all at that time.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or asking me a serious question, but yes, I think you already know that I'm a fan of Vanity. As I know you are a fan of The Revolution/ Susannah... I've been a fan of Vanity since I was twelve years old. Why?

serious question

Seems Prince and Denise duped us all.

.

Prince and Vanity were not done in 1983, 84, 85, 86, 87,88,89 . . . .

.

So, that too is another thing Prince kept out of the public eye.ll

.

I think what you said and I bolded is interesting. King of Shade and if you play me you play yourself . . . interesting way to look at it.

.

Prince was king of private and as he kept saying it is all in his music. He gave us all rare glimpses prior to his transition. I am thankful for the Piano and Mic concerts in 2016. They are all priceless.

Well if you've followed me at all here, you should know I'm team
Prince, the Rebels(what I call the band before 1982) the Time, the Revolution, Vanity 6, Sheila E(and band) the Family(not team Susannah) Mazarati, Apollonia(her place in the film) Jill Jones, Madhouse, SOTT band

I'm not trying to put any of them in competition with any of the others. I love them all equally for the 'purple culture' they were a part of with Prince. This is the stuff music history and lore is built on.

Good thing they never reunited. It was as you said not healthy for her at that time. It is nice to know that she was considered even after Purple Rain to resume her initial character of Vanity. No one played that role of Nasty Girl next to Rude Boy Prince as she did. They are such campy, sexy fun!

Sorry I misunderstood.

.

I enjoy knowing that a deep friendship bonded them for life. It takes mature, people who respect each other to be able to go through life together in a different capacity after experiencing a great love as they once had. It is on a whole different level than sex and romance.

YES IT IS!!

I especially have seemed to sit at the Triple Threat Tour. I am fascinated by those acts- ALL of them and especially the folklore or the Time at that period. I know peeps go crazy for Purple Rain but if the unheard Time and Vanity 6 albums are in that vault THAT is what I want to hear. I want anything from that time. The characters of that triple threat tour is to me the essence and brainchild for Purple Rain.

No, they were done. And I don't think that is a 'celebratory' thing if people are saying they continued sexually. Not at all 4 Vanity. Vanity was also in relationships during this period. including Billy Idol, Nikki 6 etc. And even though 'what is good for the gander is good for the goose' I don't think being 'the other woman' is ever a place of pride.

And in 1986 Vanity partied with Prince & the Revolution at a club after a show, so that was very public.

Because those songs then could be songs that Prince recycled between women. lol

To be fair the song was written before Susannah since Vanity had it during the triple threat tour but if peeps want to say it was written later on that is cool. It is a great song and timeless.

who is saying it was written later?

I do see that you cater to all the associates you've mentioned. I see too that you are enthusiastic and tend to lean in favor of the Revolution/Susannah in all debates. I'm being honest due to my observations. If what you are saying is that you think the people who are calling out Lisa for saying that WA was written for Wendy and Susannah are putting the rev's in competition with Vanity then I think that you are overstating there. There is no competition in questioning something that you think is false. Should we not speak up about something between individuals that we think might be wrong in fear of competing? If it's wrong it's wrong and I won't be afraid to address it. I should have the right to have an honest debate about something that I feel is unfair without being afraid that it will be seen as a competition. That's not my intention. Lisa said something in an article that goes against what some of us knew and we questioned it. It just so happened to be a song that was said to be inspired by Vanity. No competition, just debating what's true and what's false and what falls in the grey areas. It's unfortunate if anyone sees it as competition.

According to the information Vanity left behind she said she and Prince kept seeing one another off and on throughout the 80s. Including while he was with Kim Basinger. She wrote about it.

I was stunned and still am. That is what I meant by I do not think I can handle the truth.

No problem Vashtix, we are cool.

I don't know the full extent of Vanity 6 reforming. I believe there were 2 different 'movie' ideals happening. the Time initially had a movie idea that I believe they might have had Vanity 6 in idea as well. And then Prince had his movie idea with Madonna (Cat Sheila E) and the Lovesexy band.
Some of this was rooted in the aborted Coco Boys battle of the bands musical:the Dawn, Prince had been working in 1986.

But yes, a fellow Prince fan and I were talking about Susan Moonsie's charisma and place in the band just the other day. I've said it here and with others, that Vanity couldn't 'SANG' but she OWNED that spot. I appreciate Apollonia for her space in Purple Rain, but when you listen to her version of Sex Shooter and then the Vanity 6 version. There is no comparison.
When Vanity first walks out onto the floor in the Nasty Girl video look down at the chain she is holding in her hand, it was all over. Total charisma, total ownership of that spot.
