Not digging this new Sheila E look

She’s got the Morticia Addams loom going which isn’t flattering at all. And really if she wanted to send a message she should have sent it to her candidate Hillary Clinton who lost to the biggest embarrassment on the face of the earth, Donald Trump. America doesn’t need a message from her. But hey I know free country, free speech. I just won’t be listening to it.

I saw this and had to look twice, to be sure it was her. I am not a fan of the "resist" movement and this could be considered "cultural appropiation" by those same people.

Us Puerto Ricans assuredly have african bloodlines, but here she's trying to hard.

I am Puerto Rican. Without doing ancestry dot.com, if she's "creole" I am not stretching it to say she also has bloodlines.

She changed her appearance to look more african american to reach out to that movement.

In her book she said growing up in Oakland around black people she had to pick an ethnic idenity to keep from getting beaten up. So she rolled with the black people. I do not think she is appropriating anything she grew up around black people seemed more close to her mom's people who are from New Orleans then her Mexican dad. It is called survial.

She said her dad did not even speak Spanish around the kids and she did not relate to Mexican culture until she got a little holder.

If you read her book, she has always had an identity more closer to people of African descent in America. She didn't even identity as Mexican. She connected more to her Creole mother.

Sheila E and her brother Juan even though growing up with the Latin Jazz via their father, have always played with people like George Duke, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Ritchie, Herbie Hancock, Diana Ross, etc

And she was rocking Afro's in the 70s, even though that is not a determiner of ethnicity.

LOL, on the one hand it's mildly interesting to hear about various associates from time to time, so I cant judge too hard. On the other hand I gotta wonder who has the time to micro-analyze all of these people's every move and utterance? Whether it's Sheila, M1, M2, or any of the other sister wives, jumpoffs, friends with benefits or has been musicians after all this time? Generally speaking, not rogi in particular.

The NPG and the Revolution can at least be said to be doing something musically productive even though some of the Rev members have an issue with diarreah of the mouth. lol Morris Day and even Sheila are also doing music when she's not selling ugly merch.

In the aftermath of Prince's demise IDGAF about books, merch, social media bitchfights, gossip mongering, other people's money or conspiracy theories any longer.

I'm over it but I can only speak for myself. On topic, Sheila looks fine.

Jesus Christ on a biscuit! Where did you ever hear anything about Sheila being Puerto Rican? eek

Sheila is Mexican and Black Creole therefore she is NOT culturally appropriating anything. We had a meeting and she was grandfathered in decades ago, lol

How does having her hair jet black, bone straight and four feet long make her look more "African American?" whofarted

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheila_E.

Born in Oakland, California, Sheila E. is the daughter of Juanita Gardere, a dairy factory worker, and percussionist Pete Escovedo, with whom she frequently performs. Her mother is Creole, African American, and her father is of Mexican origin.

JC yourself. I said I was Puerto Rican.

She's obviously darker in the pick. It's not a natural tan. She's on FB all the time as light skinned as ever.

Why would she make herself up purposely darker in a protest song?

NO you did not....you said "US Puerto Ricans", why would you use the plural if you were only referring to yourself?

Another question, I'm the third person to point out that Sheila isn't Puerto Rican, why did you bypass the first two who told you that?

Third, there is such a thing called "LIGHTING" in photography. Why would you assume that she made herself up to look darker? There is no evidence of that. She looks like a hippie/flower child from the sixties, which was a decade of protest. If anything, she is channeling Cher here and being reminiscient of the culture of that era. It was not only civil rights, it was also anti-war and women's liberation.

Yall stay making shit up. lol

Exactly!

When people do not understand the references they should be humble enough to ASK rather than make erroneous assumptions.

@rogi.....this IS what many artists did during the era she is representing. They didn't sit back and wait for lying politicians to fix things, they spoke out and put pressure on them.

THAT IS WHY THE PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO CHANGE THINGS BACK THEN. Being close to 60, Sheila remembers that and is trying to help bring that mentality back at a time when she feels it's needed.

I don't see the problem.

I corrected it as soon as I saw it.

Third: So she did a whole photo shoot and happened to be darker than she is in protest shoot? She's not portraying any "hippie vibe" here. A raised fist is a symbol black power protest.

And what is a peace sign??? Do tell, lol

Y'all kill me seeing only what you want to see because you'd rather die and go to hell than be mistaken about something. Heaven forbid you should learn something.

As I said and evidently need to repeat, THERE WERE MANY DIFFERENT PROTEST GOING ON DURING THAT ERA!

Civil rights/black power movement

Anti-war protest

Women's Liberation/feminism

Sheila is old enough to remember all of this....are you?

I cannot imagine why you have such a hangup about her skin tone. She could have spent the weekend at the beach for all you know. Why would that bother you?

I am old enough.

I am not hung up with her skin color. I'm amazed that we can't admit it was done with purpose.

It has to be the same for all. Katy Perry goes Geisha and it's appropiation.

The Black Power raised fist - "By any means neccessary" is not something I am comfortable with.

Making up? It's right in front of you. One she's going for the hippie thing (all bright, Blonde wig, peace sign on her head and the other Urban brick wall, darker skin tone and big black power fist over her head. )

1. There is nothing to admit when your opinion isn't supported by any evidence whatsoever. Your assumption is not holy writ.

How is it appropriation? What part of her mom is African American/Creole don't you understand??? eek Why would it bother you if she identifies with both her AA AND Latino heritage? eek

You cannot possibly be anywhere near old enough because if you were you would understand that the point of protest isn't about making people who support the status quo comfortable. If you had your way I guess we'd still be on the back of the bus and fighting in Vietnam with all women barefoot and pregnant.

Yep. Nothing wrong with not knowing but how can people hope to understand when they are so closed minded?

There is nothing whatsoever wrong with what Sheila is representing. Next somebody will call her a Communist, I guess! lol
