1st Estate Release : An Album by John L. Nelson (lol)

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/7849347/prince-dad-john-nelson-new-song-101st-birthday

Taken from article:

"Prince's half-sister, Sharon Nelson, produced the jazzy "Heart of Mine" by John L. Nelson and said it is the first single from the album, "Don't Play With Love, The John L. Nelson Project," to be released Oct. 27."

They should try to get it together and arrange releases by a Nelson people actually care about.

If Prince had really been that interested in this project, as some have suggested, he'd have initiated it while he was still alive.

The family are basically now using the Paisley studios for their own vanity projects.

I bet we'll also see a release from Tyka. I can see her using existing Prince tracks also.

Wrong forum, but this is great news. I've always deplored than safe for this short EP in 94, and his few contribution to the Prince canon, we had no idea of what had been the work of John L. (as he called himself when releasing the EP, his only record ever). It's sad to learn that no further recording of his compositions or live shows exist, but it's better than nothing. I was just talking about it to my GF the other day: here's a man who had a lifetime of music and who, incidentally, was obviously a major influence on his son, one of the most important composer of the late 20th century, and there is virtually no trace of what his work was like... I'm really glad to learn this is about to change!

Is this really considered an estate release? Is the copyright owned by NPG?

Co-sign a waste of time and money. Why waste time on this when the estate has the rights to vault material and a ready made fan base?

They could use NPG music to stream the NPG years vault material. They own that with no restrictions and this is what they are spending time on and since when is Sharon a music producer.

I honestly think Prince was found on a doorstep.

Wasnt there a John Nelson release way back in the 80's 90's?? I could have sworn something like this came out already

Yes, he put something out when he was alive. Sharon could reissue that with her own money.

Oh bet on it. She will likely also be using Prince songs from the vault and giving herself credit for it.

In 1994 a 4-track EP was released.

I have it included on the "Platinum" bootleg CD. Nothing to hunt for, to be honest.

This is not about his fathers release, this is about the estate shenanigans, can we get this moved back to main forum?

And some people will probably support it. This really is worse case scenario. It was my first thought about the vault after he died. Nothing at all would be better than that.

Do the heirs have to pay for studio time? Seems like a shallow question, but the Estate has not been settled, so the assets should be used to generate revenue.

Where is the money coming from to create tracks, videos and albums? Just over a year ago, George Lopez helped the siblings with funeral expenses.

I don't mean to be rude or insensitive, but getting the Estate under control and in order should be priority 1, then project should come out. Just my 2 cents.

It's a travesty, but yeah, some will surely support it.

There is no way they should be doing this. If they want to do it after the probate is over that is fine but now it is a waste of time and a bad look.

Well the siblings were pretty much broke, so it could only be coming from the estate.

Paisley Park and Prince's legacy is being disrespected daily, by his own family. Anyone surprised? I'm not.

The article I read said something along the lines that Sharon used John L's sheet music to create this release. That gives me the impression that they may be using not only PP for recording purposes, but also quite possible the musical equipment as well. That is an assumption and you know what they say about assuming.

My point is simple, until the estate is settled, unless those using the PP facilites, payment needs to be made. Once the estate is settled, then the heirs are free to do what they want with the assets they own.

I believe they can get advances from their disbursements but they should be saving or investing that money

Don't comment articles titles without reading the actual article.

People do that regularly on FB and it only achieves 2 things: making them look like fools and irritating the people who actually did care to read the article.

Just the other day, I shared an article about a historic art performance from 1974, and based on the title describing the performance, a few fools commented "So what? Such performances have been done over and over for the last 40 years". Well, yes they have... ever since that one historic perfomance started the trend rolleyes

So yes, there was a John L. Nelson release in 1994, as stated clearly in the article.

idk, seems Prince had a lot of things he wanted to do but never got around to them, doesn't mean it didn't mean anything to him.

According to the article they used John L's sheet music and PP studios to record the songs. Please point out to me where it states that this is an official release from the estate.

For all we know Sharon or Norrine could be financing this from their portion of the inheritance. The comments on this thread are way out of line.

It was a question not a QUOTE as you noted try reading what I read prior to commenting, I did not read the article because a proper link was not posted originally thank you very much. I am well aware of FB and not reading that is how we got the president we have now.

Well they have not inherited anything yet. They maybe reviving an advance and it is their right to do as they please with that money but it is still a waste of time. Why not open the studio for business?
