If u were Prince and Vanity was your girlfriend u would want 2 share a tour bus with her too. They wanted 2 be together and lusting 4 each other - understandable. I never knew that Brenda did not get on with Vanity, I thought they were mates!

If Prince had a tour bus with just him and Vanity sounds like they spent time together just them. Alex Hahn said Prince spent no time with her and it was just all for show Vanity being his
Girlfriend.

eek Did we read the same book? Because that's not what Alex Hahn said.

He said, the relationship between P & Vanity which began amid a glow of sexual chemsitry, soon became combustible because P continued to see other women, Jill Jones and Susan Moonsie amoung them which made Vanity jealous. As P got to know Vanity, the less he liked her because he found her abrasive.

At that same time, the band felt distanced from P, Dez was the one who was most disgruntled. Prince traveled on his own bus, accompanied by Huntsberry, Fargnoli and a member of his growing harem of girlfriends.

How would it benefit him to not be truthful where Vanity is concerned? What's his motive? Even in Hahn's book it was noted that Dez was disgruntled.

I just finished reading Dez Dickerson's "My Time With Prince" and It was a nice read (apart from the blatant animosity towards Vanity that is....)

.....

Having said all that. Does anyone else think Dez was justified in his irritation with Vanity? Was Vanity to blame or was Dez out of line for thinking Vanity had such a hold on Prince that she could manipulate him to the exclusion of his own Bandmates? I'll post my thoughts in the first post.
[Edited 6/18/17 6:56am]

The reality is life moves on. Prince wrote, arranged, produced and performed all his own music, then put a band together to tour. He wanted to help his friends so engaged them but knew he was and always would be a one man band for WB. Then a young virile man fell in love with a stunning young woman who took him "over"and he did all to please. Wrong perhaps but a human fraility and life. If Dez and others were so talented they would charge ahead on their own talent.....

I amnot either but it appears there a group a people around Prince during the 80s who to this day discount Vanity's presence in the camp. They push others as muse and inspiration at the time. If Prince had not himself came out and shared certain things I would have thought Vanity was nothing but a passing in the night for him. New information keeps emerging to prove what these people have put out all these years and I believed to be true was not true because for whatever reason they carried a bias toward someone else besides Vanity.

Because they are a bunch of morons. Anytime you discount comments that came out of his own mouth about her it is simply being a moronic. Vanitiy does not fit the narrative they want to weave even if the narrative has no basis in reality.

OK, I'm gonna try to explain what may be the issue...

Now all y'all V fans/stans keep in mind as I type this...I like V, I really do...But I'm a P fan, first and foremost...so please keep that in mind when I try to explain my feelings about her...

I really didn't feel anything much about her except a vague fondness that connected to P until all this fuss in threads about her vs "insert another purple muse"...

I remember her from back in the day when she was with P and thought they were cute together...plus I anticipated her being in PR cuz I was curious about her and probably even got caught up in the hype at the time and sang along with Nasty Girl, although that was short-lived for me cuz while it's a catchy tune the vocals are...annnyway, all of a sudden she was gone and word was she and P had broken up so that was about it for me unless she popped up on a TV show or magazine...then I always then saw her in Last Dragon and Action Jackson, but that's about it...

V's pretty, no doubt about it...and the more old videos I see of her I can remember how cute and sorta quirky and smiley and a bit airheaded and lowkey ratchet she seemed to me...in a fun way...like a gal who'd be fun to hang out with...

Everyone's tastes differ on talent, but I gotta admit, I have very rarely listened to any of P's protegees voices and thought "OMG, that's it!"...and the V6?A6 choreography was so basic that I immediately thought "Ok, pretty and awkward and not dancers"...(Yes, Apples...I loveya, but you too)...

He tended to find very pretty gals with, for the most part, thin vaporous singing voices...some off tune to my ear and I find most of them very hard to listen to for any extended time...The gals with these strong beautiful voices tended not to be romantic partners, despite rumours otherwise...as a matter of fact, whenever I heard a good singer in the bunch I'd smirk and chuckle to myself and think "Pretty gal, great voice...P ain't effin her"...

Over the years we've come to appreciate Just my opinion of course, but I think the ones who resented V only saw a pretty girl who they felt was extremely modestly talented and that pisses folks off when gals like that get ahead so they mentally toss them aside...I think that's why V gets mentally tossed aside, for being just pretty and not much more...

Also, I think whenever it comes to a gal who is known to have shared his bed...well...jealousy creeps into the scenario...Y'all can say no, but...

At that same time, the band felt distanced from P, Dez was the one who was most disgruntled. Prince traveled on his own bus, accompanied by Huntsberry, Fargnoli and a member of his growing harem of girlfriends.

*
"Prince traveled on his own bus, accompanied by Huntsberry, Fargnoli and a member of growing harem of girlfriends"
Dez implied Vanity was directly responsible for separating Prince away from everyone else because he started riding on his own tour bus to be with Vanity. At that particular time this excluded Susan Moonsie and Jill Jones. "The members of the growing harem of girlfriends" you mentioned, came later after Vanity was barely speaking to Prince and refused to ride with Prince on the same tour bus any longer. Dez did not complain that Prince rode on his own bus with various girls. It was Vanity he bemoaned. The bodyguard and manager was a given. When Dez said "there was a sideman separation", in juxtapose it was Prince, Vanity, his bodyguard and manager - verses the band and the girls. Dez rationalized Vanity as a threat for a reason.

*
"Did we read the same book? Because that's not what Alex Hahn said."
I wouldn't go as far as saying Alex Hann's book lied. Perhaps truthful isn't the word to use, but extensive research on Vanity's relationship with Prince was sadly lacking, let's say that. As a comparison, there's no comparing what Alex Hahn has gathered from second hand information and referenced as facts in his book, amid Dez Dickerson's own memory. "The Rise Of Prince" was driven by sensationalizing... "My Time With Prince" a journey told through the eyes of a man who lived it. "The Rise Of Prince" with accounts that has been proven false. "My Time With Prince" with accounts from Dez Dickerson, Prince's Bandmate of five years who directly worked with Prince, Vanity, Susan, Jill Jones and the whole Prince camp of that era. One filled with hearsay... One of remembrance... Dez used the word to the exclusion and detriment because he expiernced Prince placing Vanity above all first hand. Obviously later in time, Prince and Vanity's relationship became too intense for either to handle. That info is legendary and truthful and I believe it because both Prince and Vanity said it, as well as how much they loved each other deeply, but other books portrays them in a way that leaves out the loving each other deeply part that we can see in Dez's book. I think that's what Vashtix was getting at.

Who else?

Lotsa fans/stans of other P protegees and muses and love interests...

They also disregard Jill Jones pretty often, but I think that's cuz she always comes off as pretty thirsty and not particularly pleasant...and that's not recent...I'll admit I did usedta feel abit sorry for her cuz she always seemed to be the girl left waiting in both PR and GB, but then I realized that wasn't just a role in a movie...she was sorta the girl left behind...I feel sorry for her.

Susan Moonsie also seems to be a girl left behind, but I've never seen/heard her whine about it...she's kept her dignity.

Apples has an undeniably place in the purpleness, but after 4/21 think she started feeling a bit left out after some of the other gals started jockeying for position as to who was higher on the purple food chain and she kinda acted out a bit...still love her though...

SheilaE also has an undeniable place in purpleness, but again, after 4/21 she also started ating out a bit and jockeying for position...still love her as well.

Seriously, fans know who is whom in the Purple Harem Heierachy...nobody needs to remind anyone of that...

It's actually a very simple formula to determine where gals sit on the purple food chain...determine when/if/how close they came to Minnesota...pretty simple really...Mayte even wrote about that in her book...

"The gal on her way into P's life was in Minnesota, the gal on her way out of P's life wasn't in Minnesota..."

Yeah I know of fan. Especially those who seem to go after any woman connected with Prince. Most never go after men. Maybe it's a lot of women doing the attacking?

I do remember a woman on a FB group saying "she would never forgive Morris for what he did to Prince" literally.

Jill has always praised Vanity though, I mean bowing down to her. And always seemed to have a respect for her.

Susan Moonsie befriend Vanity, and then went on to get her higher education. I don't think she's ever discredited Vanity. And that connection Vanity 6 had was just electric. The way they feed off of each other.

.

My question, was about who was discrediting Vanity. I've never read( and I read a lot) of anyone discrediting or disrespecting Vanity from the 80s camp back then.

Yep I can count on one hand the women that I know Prince worked with at some point that I can say I'm a fan of! Sueann Carwell, Rosie Gaines, and Shelby J are the only ladies that I enjoy hearing. Esperanza Spalding is one that I"m not a much of a fan of but I can semi find pleasing to the ear. It kills me that out of all the ladies I have researched that Prince worked with that I have only 4 women to enjoy music from. Everyone else I have sought out, listened to their music and I just really really don't like what I hear. It isn't for any other reason than the voice I hear singing just does not appeal to me. Maybe they have good personalities, good looks, or other attributes I don't see. But if they can't grab me with their vocal talent then I lose interest in them as a person.
