I think It's clear that the reason Prince paid more attention to Vanity's Six was simple because he felt more attuned to the vision he had for Vanity than he did for the Time or even his own band. Vanity was his muse and lover and that alone would have inspired in him the type of effort and drive it would take to expose her to the stratosphere he felt she could go. He believed in her. He knew she had it, because she energized the vision in him. He simple went with what his heart told him. Hence the reason she became the focal point of his exposition and the reason he placed her as female lead in Purple Rain before things went astray. It's fair to say that the fact that she was his lover played a part in the drive, but being his lover and muse activated an intuition he felt she could bring to light.

nod

Morris Day and other members of the Time didn't seem to complain about the time and attention he was giving Vanity or did they?

I think they did but not directed at the women personally. Dez seems like the only one who is a little personal about it, but it also might be more directed at Prince than Denise.

Although It's evident Dez placed blame towards Prince, he seemed fixated that he wanted to place the blame on Vanity. He thought she somehow used her wiles to manipulate Prince to her benefit and to the detriment of others in his camp.

"I became increasingly irritated with Denise/Vanity. She had been brazen in her opportunism, I saw her positioning herself with Prince to the exclusion and detriment of those who were there and had been loyal before her. That kind of manipulation has always been a personal pet peeve of mine."

To me he seemed unjustifiable bitter towards her.

That was is women nothing left to really say but how would he have a had a relationship with her if he did not spend time with her? He saw the potential with her charisma and look No one in the Revolution had it going on charisma wise better than Vanity>

Dez sounds like a jelous girlfriend so much for Christian love and forgiveness>

I happen to agree with Dez. I can see where he is coming from. In the end it seems Vanity was a waste of time, an unnecessary distraction, and nuisance. No one remembers Vanity unless you coax their memory. She's an afterthought. Not trying to be mean, just sayin.
But that's how it always goes. Some woman comes along and messes everything up. He is right they deserved to be in the RS article and pics. Not Vanity. I never understood the big fuss about her. So many women came and went. She wasn't so special. The guys were battling it out in the trenches with P those esrly years. They were a tight band. You don't mess with that. They helped launch P into super stardom. I dont feel Dez is out of line.
Besides plenty of others in P's camp felt the same way about her. They were there. They would know better than any of us here would if and how much of a detriment she was. I will go with their accounts of the situation. And i don't think P was so starved for female attention (love/sex) that he needed to isolate himself with his lady away from the rest of the world.
That isolation thing was a theme throughout his life tho and probably not for the better.

Okay your opinion, but to challenge you, I think you are totally wrong that she is an afterthought and people people don't remember her. It's thirty something years later. I went to see Purple Rain on 4/21, people were talking about her in the movie theater. There are Twitter accounts, blogs about her, tumbler and Facebook pages abound. Fan groups, Tshirts, you name it. All that after she gave up the spotlight twenty something years ago. All that when girl wasn't even in Purple Rain... She made an impact. Even in your own statement you admit that you don't understand what all the fuss is about her, so clearly people remember her... Just sayin. wink

WOW . . . not trying to be offensive to anyone here either but she was the original Prince Girl. She was the prototype. She was the original and the best. She is no afterthought. I do think some wish she and her memory would go away but as times go on I think her legend will grow.

I realize in the Purple Circle there will always be resentment of Vanity and her influence, place in Prince's public history and personal especially since he died right after her but you cannot deny when he was with her he was white hot. She clearly was a great inspiration at the time. Nothing he ever did compares to what he did during that time commercially. (Please do not drag me for that blame that on the masses). For a while Prince and Vanity had the public 's imagination. Yes, Apples did the movie but she never reached the imagination as Vanity did- neither did Sheila- I am not speaking Prince fans I am speaking in general.

I know I will dragged but I understand his mates ignoring her and discounting her especially now since he died they can rewrite history as they want it.

Dez kept it real unlike a lot of what is being said since April 21, 2016....I would have been pissed too.

People are forgetting that Vanity was the first in a long line of females of questionable talent that Prince was cupcaking with to the detriment of band members. Dez couldn't have known at the time that this was going to become a pattern.

Dude worked his ass off for years and put up with all manner of eccentricites only to be upstaged by the first nice tail that came along.

And after all that she walked out on him reportedly because she wanted more money....for what I don't know. lol

So in the end Prince might have been better off rewarding Dez and the bands loyalty.

The same path is littered with the fallen projects of talented people like Rosie Gaines, Tamar and other people with genuine singing or playing ability. He wasted a lot of time promoting people like Bria, Vanity, Carmen and Mayte unfortunately.

The time were formidable though ; they just had everything. Vanity 6 was not even close to what the time were back then.

Yeah, both were very profitable for Prince. I mean I think Vanity 6 as entertainers were formidable too. I think that is why 1982-83 was such a high purple time too

Both were going to bring Prince high status if he handled them better. And as we see by 1984 it didn't go so well as a result.

I have a bunch of pictures from the Time 1981-1983 and Vanity 6 1982-1983 and for every photo of Morris Day or the Time there are about 5-7 of Vanity 6. Vanity 6 album cover photos/lp sleaves were more creative too. And the Time only had 2 videos Cool and the Walk

Interesting info but I think the Time were a tight band and so, so good. Vanity 6 - their album was good and better the pop music we have now just not the same caliber as The Time. Prince was way ahead of his time.

I never thought he ignored The Time for Vanity 6. Interesting discussion. Did you see the Triple Threat Tour?

Totally see his point, but this was not the first time the "star" has stepped way out in front of the band, it has happened many times... On a side note, I am wondering why it is o.k. To quote many paragraphs from Dez's book here, with out fear of law suits, but could have nothing quoted from maytes book? Are the publishing laws different for different people? That was rhetorical, obviously they are not...just think it is interesting

Do you see Brian, Carmen and Mayte in the same league as Vanity?

Carmen I get a little bit but Bria and Mayte both have nothing going on except what they did with Prince.

Carmen had no type of career when she met Prince. Prince made her and spent money on her with no return.

Vanity however already mad a movie and had a successful modeling career.

Vanity had a career before Prince and after Prince. She is not in the same league as Bria, Carmen and M1.

You have to address what I actually said though. But you cannot do that if you are overly emotional or hysterical about it. Being calm and detached helps with reasoning.

I specifically said "singing and playing ability". The comparison stopped there.

Vanity was and still is the most beautiful and charismatic of Prince's proteges, which I was not disputing so there's no need to get defensive. lol

Vanity's stock would have risen much higher IF she had remained to star in Purple Rain. It would have been even more of a classic because she and Prince had that firey chemistry that could be duplicated with an actress as mediocre as Apollonia. Vanity happened to be a pretty decent actress.

Neither Dez or anybody else could have found fault with that.

But the thing is though, Vanity Six was a success for Prince... Vanity wasn't just some fly by night act that did nothing for him. Her name was linked to his for a reason. Still talked about for a reason. The impact they made collaborating helped to increase his legend back then. Helped to boost public exposure. Nasty Girl was huge. Made him money, Increased his status. You can't just count that out. She had a part in that. He scored big bringing her in his Purple Camp. She wasn't deadweight. She wasn't a waste of time. She did something for him. The others you've mentioned don't even come remotely close. Some could probably sing circles around her, but would they have been as successful? Whatever the case, she had what it took and she was a success for him, and that's what mattered in the scheme of things and Prince's Purple Kingdom at the time.

I agree,

Prince should have formed a backing band for Vanity 6 and let them have at it

Dez has talent for sure but what he lacks Vanity owns and that is Charisma

Sheila E is another huge talent, but she never had the charisma Vanity had from 1984-1986

it took her a while to develop what Vanity had naturally.

That is why when U C her first walk through that door in the Nasty Girls video it is all over.
That is why that cover of the Rolling Stones Magazine is till one of the most popular

Ok...I liked V and bear her no ill will...and I respect her og as a purple muse, but I'm bowing out at this point cuz y'all are starting to talk about talent and "It factor" and I just don't see that and I certainly don't wanna disparage her.

I see Dez's point! If you read the book then you know Dez was in a relationship with high school sweetheart Becky who he married while he still was in the band after one of the tours. I would be willing to bet that Bobby Z, BrownMark, and let's take it back to even Andre when he was in the band all had their girlfriends/wives but none of them ever let their women come before the band. The fact that Prince did not show the band the same respect? yeah I'd have been very angry too.

That is because gorgeous women coochie popping in lingerie is a big deal to so many people. It was a novel idea at the time and not commonplace like it is today. All I cared about then AND now is if a person can sing or not.

Same with Prince. He's adorable but if he couldn't throw down like he did I wouldn't have paid him the time of day. lol

Vanity was a pretty decent actress and that would have made her an asset to the Prince camp that Dez or anybody else couldn't dispute.

Vanity admitted she wasn't the greatest singer, but her voice wasn't terrible and had Motown promoted her more, her solo albums might have done better.

As far as return for Prince- between Vanity, Carmen, Bria, and Mayte, Vanity brought in the most return for him with Nasty Girl. He was trying to replicate that success with the protegees that followed. Bria can sing but I don't think the Elixir album did as well as the Vanity 6 album. I could be wrong, it would be interesting to compare the two to see which one grossed more for the time.

I agree with you that if Vanity had stayed for Purple Rain, the movie would've been firey hot as the leading female character was created for her personality and Apollonia could not deliver. It would have been a bigger return for Prince and Vanity. However, despite her not being in the movie, people do still associate her to Purple Rain. People do remember that she was supposed to be in the movie with Prince.

Her stock in Princeworld would have risen much higher IF she had remained to star in Purple Rain like she should have done. It would have been even more of a classic because she and Prince had that firey chemistry that could not be duplicated with an actress as mediocre as Apollonia.

I've got nothing against Apples, she also has a place of honour in the purple realm, but as cute as she was I just kinda tolerated her in PR...I was looking forward to V playing opposite P, regardless of her modest talents...

It's an undisputed smash with Apples, but with V & P together, I can only imagine how stratospheric the movie would've been...with those two smoldering at each other...and the sexual tension???

Phew

Totally see his point, but this was not the first time the "star" has stepped way out in front of the band, it has happened many times... On a side note, I am wondering why it is o.k. To quote many paragraphs from Dez's book here, with out fear of law suits, but could have nothing quoted from maytes book? Are the publishing laws different for different people? That was rhetorical, obviously they are not...just think it is interesting

I was wondering the same thing. The Mods even put disclaimers in on both book clubs, that we couldn't.

Being calm and detached helps with reasoning.

wave Have I been hysterical or emotional.? . . . .

I stated my opinion on the women named.

Vanity was not worried about her stock in the Princeoworld or she would have never left. She had been working at her dream since a 17 year old kid. Apples was in Purple Rain and never hit as Vanity did outside the camp.

However if there are outtakes of filming done before she left I would love to see it.

WOW . . . not trying to be offensive to anyone here either but she was the original Prince Girl.

Do not pay any attention. Certain people like spouting nonsense. He got a separate bus for himself and his ladyfriend and certain bitches in his band were pissed. Take a good look at the success rate of Dez Dickerson as a musician at least Vantiy did get to act a bit and have a carreer.
