Vanity 6's unreleased version of Sex Shooter

https://www.youtube.com/w...PqOfMVEA-A

I recently stumbled over this on YouTube and I have to say it's as funky as hell!

This sounds like the raw demo just with him and Vanity and has a much more rock n roll 'rougher' vibe than the released version with Appolonia 6. I love the way you can hear Prince's guide vocals in it and especially those for Brenda and Susan towards the end (from 5:30 onwards)!

Yes! Vanity killed it on her version of Sex Shooter! The beat has a much edgier and New Wave feel than Appolonia's, and just when you think the song is over... It gets even funkier. Prince being in the background added to the fire. If this was released back then, she would have torn up the charts with it- especially coming off of taking the world by storm with her charisma and the popularity of Nasty Girl.

^ Agreed, there's a certain rawness and energy in these kind of songs that really was missing in his later work. I really love the sheer energy, 'aliveness' and passion in them!

It's too bad that Vanity left and we never got a second Vanity 6 album. That album would have been outrageous! I imagine that Side One would have included "Sex Shooter","Vibrator" and "G-Spot".It would have been a really bold, aggressive album!

I believe in his last Rolling Stone interview P confirmed an unreleased 2nd V6 album and also one by The Time.

I love hearing Vanity's breathless singing ; This is so GOOD. No wonder Prince did the drawing with Apples saying "sorry" while standing next to the piano.

He could replace with looks but Vanity was a hoot!

If only they had this on video - when they were shooting the film. I wish they had some footage of Vanity in the role somewhere.

This is definitely a real version because if you read the comments section, Brenda commented:

DAMN!!!!! Sure brings back memories.....and tears

I hope Tyka eventually releases any Vanity/Vanity 6 recordings in the vault

Convincing is the perfect word. You can hear the confidence in her voice. You can tell Prince handpicked those lyrics for her.

No girl's body can compete with mine
No girl's rap can top my lines
No girl's kiss can ring your chimes
Come on boy, let's make some time
I'm a sex shooter
Shootin' love in your direction lol

On a side note, the vault seems to have some info wrong. http://www.princevault.co...ex_Shooter It says Vanity's intial tracking took place November of 1983 but Vanity had already left the Prince camp by August 1983. Go figure..

Luvgirl you are so right ! It was convincing. She had all that swag! You can see her able to back it up. She was sultry.

Not many could have competed with her.

Listening to her sing Sex Shooter now hits home what was missed when she walked away from the project.

Nothing against Apples but there is a sexy, swag missing with Apples that Vanity captures and makes it believable.

A lesson learned is try not to mix business with pleasure. It can have devestating effects. I often think if she was not seeing Prince the V6 may have lasted longer . Then if she was not seeing Prince the inspiration for the songs and Purple Rain may have not been as it was-

Great topic to debate/discuss and I am sure will be debated and discuss for years to come.

True, but let's face it.....that would have been difficult for Prince to do lol There's no way he could take a beautiful woman into a recording studio and not try to be with her, romantically. And Vanity was really hard to resist, lol.
