Sheila E / Susannah Melvoin

I don't want this to be a gossipy thread about his love life, and I'm sorry if it's been covered before... but this new (or new to me) info coming out about when and where things were recorded, relationships, got me thinking...

.

Prince was apparently having a relationship with both Sheila E and Susannah Melvoin between 85' - '87!

.

Apparently his relationship with Sheila started in 84, asked her to marry him around 87, but wasn't he was living with Susannah around those years?

.

Was this a reason for the breakup of The Revolution and end of The Family... Or is that speculating too far? eek

He was seeing Susan, Jill, Sheila E, Devin Devasquez and somewhere he found time to met Anna Fantastic. Who knows who else.

Sheila E said she backed of on Prince 'romantically' around late 84-85 when she noticed how many women were around Prince. I think it resumed after the Revolution break up.

.

Susannah was still with Prince after the Revolution breakup and recording vocals with him ie Rock Hard in a Funky Place, Play In the Sunshine etc etc

I believe Susannah left Prince in December 1986-January 1987

.

the Family disbanded when St Paul left to make money

.

the Revolution breakup had to do with emotional ties(Prince talked about it in a 1990 interview)

Because in Sheila's book she does goes on a bit about how much Prince was bugging her about the love scenes in Krush Groove. He even came to the set and gave her a warning about getting rid of the scene. Alan Leeds said she showed up in France after he sent Susanna home. Sheila was running around with Prince off and on from the PR tour to the 91.

Yes I will post it to day. In a few, for some reason my browser at work is not allowing me to Cut n Paste.

.

It really was a vulnerable read in my opinion. Like he was reflecting on things (gone wrong/concerns at this crossroads) he was deflecting too like saying 'I don't know why Wendy & Lisa are hurt' or 'I'm playing the bad guy but Morris fired Jimmy & Terry, it was his band'

.

also when you read the lyrics 2 'In This Bed I Scream' dedicated to Lisa Susannah & Wendy it really opens it up.

There is still some residue of emotional pain. "What if everybody around me split?" he asks. "Then I'd be left with only me, and I'd have to fend for me. That's why I have to protect me."

Prince's detractors might diagnose these words as the classic pathology of a control freak. His high-minded supporters might say those are normal protective feelings for somebody who was kicked onto the streets by his beloved father at age fourteen. Prince himself, however, echoes Popeye more than Freud as he analyzes just who he is. "I am what I am," he says. "I feel if I can please myself musically, then I can please others, too."

Finally, there is one more philosophy unchanged with the years. "I play music," Prince has said. "I make records. I make movies. I don't do interviews."

.

The crisis didn't involve a leap or a loss of faith, Prince has said, but simply the realization that it was time to stop acting like such and angry soul. "I was an expert at cutting off people in my life and disappearing without a glance back, never to return," he'd said. "Half the things people were writing about me were true."

.

Day's old charge of overbossing, however, brings a quirkier and crosser memory. "That whole thing came from my early days, when I was working with a lot of people who weren't exactly designed for their jobs," Prince says. "I had to do a lot, and I had to have control, because a lot of them didn't know exactly what was needed."

The most often-told tale involves Prince firing the then-unknown Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from the Time in 1982. Jam and Lewis, all parties now agree, left a Time tour on a day off to produce their first record for the SOS Band. A freak snowstorm in Atlanta grounded them for an extra day, and the two missed a gig. When Jam and Lewis returned, they were summarily fired. Jobless, the two missed Purple Rain, so they set up as producers and went scrounging for clients. In the years since, they've produced everyone from Janet Jackson to Herb Alpert, becoming the other superpower on the Minneapolis music scene.

"I'm playing the bad guy," says Prince, "but I didn't fire Jimmy and Terry. Morris asked me what I would do in his situation. Remember, it was his band."

Despite the rap, Prince says, he harbors no ill will toward the now-famous producers working across town from Paisley Park at their Flyte Time studios. "We're friends," he says. "We know each other like brothers. Jimmy always gave me a lot of credit for getting things going in Minneapolis, and I'm hip to that. Terry's more aloof, but I know that." And their music? "Terry and Jimmy aren't into the Minneapolis sound," Prince says. "They're into making every single one of their records a hit. Not that there's anything wrong with that, we're just different."

With this, Prince cues up the Graffiti Bridge movie to the sequence in which the Time performs "Shake!" The scene looks like something Busby Berkeley would have cooked up if he had choreographed funk.

The Time, Prince says, is proof of the good that can come from a group dissolving and eventually coming back together. "They broke up because they'd run out of ideas," he says. "They went off and did their own thing, and now they're terrifying."

Prince said this formula was just what he had in mind when, in short order, he broke up the Revolution. "I felt we all needed to grow," he says. "We all needed to play a wide range of music with different types of people. Then we could come back eight times as strong.

"No band can do everything," he continues. "For instance, this band I'm with now is funky. With them, I can drag out 'Baby I'm a Star' all night! I just keep switching gears on them, and something else funky will happen. I couldn't do that with the Revolution. They were a different kind of funky, more electronic and cold. The Revolution could tear up 'Darling Nikki,' which was about the coldest song ever written But I wouldn't even think about playing that song with this band."

The breakup of the Revolution apparently didn't go down easy. Today, Prince's relationship with his onetime best friends Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman is somewhere between uncomfortable and estranged. "I talk to Wendy and Lisa, but it's like this," Prince says, moving his hands in opposite directions. "I still hear a lot of hurt from them, and that bothers me. When I knew them, they were two spunky, wonderful human beings. I honestly don't know what they're hurt about."

So far, Prince says, the two women haven't listened to the few tidbits of advice he has offered. For their first video, Prince recommended that they try to announce themselves by making a splash, by "doing something like jumping off a speaker with smoke pouring out everywhere. Something." When he saw the video, however, Wendy was sitting in a chair, playing her guitar. "You can't do that when you're just getting established -- kids watching MTV see that and they go click,"Prince says, miming a channel being changed. "They'd rather watch a commercial."

Still, Prince's pronouncements seem proffered more in mourning than in malice. "Wendy and Lisa are going to have to do some more serious soul-searching and decide what they want to write about," he says sadly and shakes his head. "I don't know what Wendy and Lisa are so hurt about. I wish I did, but I don't."

I wonder why Sheila didn't give it a go with him when he became JW. I don't know of her religious beliefs, though. I thought they would have made a nice couple--considering she played on stage with him the longest of his females and they seemed to be always smiling at each other, too! Awesome chemistry!

I belive it was Wendy who said Prince broke up with Susannah over the phone. Also Jill Jones said he came and told her he was engaged to Susannah but they were going to continue to see each other and he put Jill up in an apartment in NYC ( wondering if this is the apartment that had the swing hanging from the ceiling) therefore if he had married Susannah Jill was going to be his mistress. Also he was dating Devon who said she wanted to meet Wendy, Lisa, and Sheila but he never introduced her and of course she found out years later that he was dating Sue + Sheila E so of course she was not going to be introduced.

But I've always read, that she left him and moved back to LA. I don't know when the actual engagement was off thought.

Best to go through that when your young.

Now all these female Prince fans and (some associates) who have romantic ideals of being Prince's woman or something, is sad.

I think she was star struck with Prince, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I'm not saying the whole time but 1980s she was start struck, but I think, that and her as the 'secret lover' protege I think it went into latter life. I mean I don't think Sheila E actually talked about a relationship with Prince until the 2007-2010 period. Prior it was always 'did they date or is it just a musical friendship'.

.

Outside of the times she was protege and drummer, she never really talked much about Prince.

But I mean you really would have to be paying hard attention to get that.

She just really didn't say much.

It was always hinted as a possibility, her whole protege image was resolved around secret & noon rendezvous, in Paris, Secret Street, dreams of romance and there is a nasty rumour going round, love on a blue train, affairs at the boyz club etc

.

I followed a lot of Sheila E but I missed that. It wasn't till she did the interview opening up about her sexual abuse as a child that she 'really' started talking.

I got it right. OF4S,I totally forgot about Moonsie. I'm talking about what Susan Rogers said. I normally have a link available but I'm on my cell and haven't turned my laptop on yet. This thing said about the breakup over the phone came from Susan Rogers if I remember correctly. I've read so much since his passing. I will find the article later, unless someone else post it. Way too many files. I just shared a pic of exactly how many files I have on my hard drive relating to P... posted it on my princeandvanity.net website... We're talking over a hundred and something gb worth of files. I might have to check some screenshots I made, too. Gotta go, but uhm thanks for offering me to get the name right, Simmons0061. As you can see, I already had it right. smile Be back later! I Gotta go.

I think she was more crazy about him then he was about her. If he married her it would have been pratical but I think he followed his heart. Even Wendy said he was not fake or phoney with his feelings.

Career wise sure but I do not believe he would get married for PR purposes. I have may issues with M1 but I do not doubt that when he married her he cared about and probably did after they divorced but just did not want to be married to her anymore.

I think he never was in love with her and I think Mayte knows- no matter how much we lie to the world deep inside we know the truth. I think that is why she is hell bent and changing the narrative since he is dead-she finally can.

Mayte wasn't pregnant when they got married, & that's BS that they married for PR purpose. They were deeply in love, you can tell it in all the interviews and videos. Plus they planned that wedding months in advanced....I swear the things some people come up with are crazy.
