Video: Esperanza Spalding Talks About Collaborating with Prince

It's clear that this highly intelligent, classically-trained musician had enormous respect for Prince.

This video is from 2011 when she was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist. (She won!)

Yes they were very good friends.Wish they had worked more together and collaborated on an album. They wrote a song together with Chris Turner called We Are America calling for the closing of Guantanamo Bay.Prince also co-produced the song.

Yes, It was clear he was very proud of their friendship. I think she was the only person he mentioned by name in his 2014 interview with Arsenio Hall. That says a lot. He obviously really respected her as an artist.

I just started listening to her music last night. She's got very mature taste and style.

She got her foundation as a violinist and was at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

I think Prince was a true intellectual and melded well with people like this.

Their friendship was able to continue. That makes me so happy.

Esperanza played at Prince's 3121 jazz club in 2006 too, along with Christian Scott, the trumpet player on Somewhere Here On Earth. She and Prince always spoke highly of one another and I love how supportive they were of each other.I remember reading an interview with her in Bass Player magazine in 2012 and she talked about Prince and how impressive he was on the bass. cool

Thanks for this info, PC. She was playing with him right away it seems.
And yes, listening to her talk about Prince gives me a broader idea of who he was as a person and musician.

Prince always had women around him who were beautiful yes, but he also chose ones who were intelligent.

I do not think Prince was around many smart women. They are not intelligent in the way Esperanza is; this woman is soulful and has wisdom for the ages. She can speak about world issues , not just music and she is inclusive.

She is very cultured, and that is something that is a very attractive quality. I imagine she and Prince had some very interesting, rich conversations.

They may have been but Esperanza was different, She just was a real musician and she was about it I do not think she was sniffing out Prince to help her on a come up or do an album.

She is not some silly giggly girl talking about what he inspired in her- when she speaks of Prince and Stevie Wonder it is as a true student who has an authentic love of her craft.

Love her accepting this award:

Yes I agree. I liked that he worked with Lianne La Havas and Janelle Monae as well.

She had the courage to be honest, even in front of millions of people.
She was a little nervous to be there, so that speaks volumes about who she is.

I like how she handled that too; as I said she is really very wise and not a simpleton in any way.
