She's exactly on point! "[Prince] always said, ‘Do your own thing,’ and I am going to be doing my thing. This thing at Paisley Park is not what Prince was about. Ticket prices are like $500, and people who are really fans are expected to pay that to hear some stories. I’d understand if this money was going to a charity he believed in, but it’s just a lot of people hitting while the iron is hot. He’s already said it, ‘Old Friends 4 Sale': get ‘em while the gettin’ is hot, but you better watch out, they’ll kiss you until they get what you got. How about that? He wouldn’t like this, I know it.”

The article does say she points to Mayte as striking while the iron is hot. But you know what - it's Mayte's story. She as there. She married ol' boy and had two kids by him. Mayte isn't yet another fan who dug through The Vault, put together some dates and a new way of saying "He recorded spiritual songs on Sunday", while throwing in a new half-assed anecdote from a member of The Revolution or NPG.

Elisa's right about the rest. There's no way Prince would 1) charge $500 or $999 for this stupid celebration, and 2) do it on a date of death. Even though he didn't really believe in birthday, he did understand that fans would be drawn to the significance of the event around June (plus it's just nicer weather HA).

While I understand the estate & PP has to create a cash flow and actually support that (who wants Prince's legacy, belongings and assets just sitting around collecting dust while debtors pick through it like a sample plate of frozen cherries at Cosco?), don't fucking pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. All of us fans can see bullshit & real moneygrabbing when it's in front of us (like the other plethora of books that have come out in the last year - some days after he died). Mayte writing a book is not money grabbing. It's her right to make a living and tell her story. The book is getting incredible reviews from fans. Every time I see someone post about it, they love it. Elisa will write a book soon enough, or an essay in a paper or something, and get a check for it. It's only a matter of time. But maybe right now, money don't matter 2 nite.

"Mayte writing a book is not money grabbing." Give me a break. I can't stand it when people want to call the obvious by something other than what it is. According to Mayte the book was written "out of love", but as soon as Prince was pronounced dead, the market opened for her to publish a book about Prince with details that he would not want made public. Let's call it like it is: when she released her book, she agreed to commercially exploit her life and Prince's for money and attention. I would have more respect for her if she copped to it. I agree with Elisa 100%. Prince once said "you can tell if a friendship is beneficial to you, if they are respectful of you when they are not around you". That quote rings true with every stop of Mayte's book tour.

LEt me guess you are defending Mayte, but you are jumping Elisa's ass for actually be concerned about the timing of releases. She actually apologized for her statement. Yeah, she mentioned a relationship with Prince..big deal. She didn't elaborate and she basically stated he was a friend at the end.

BTW, if you go to her facebook, it is apparent she is still a real estate agent too. She could make a lot more money doing what these other ladies are doing. She is paying her bills by working hard for a living and mostly doing her own thing.

Elisa is fine, by me. Yes, I am jumping on the idea of her judgment of timing of Mayte or Shelby's releases, whether a book or a CD (namely by associates, not some wannabe fan who wants to make a few bucks on an Amazon title - the latter doesn't register with me at all). I'm also defending her right, or Mayte's etc, to tell their stories when/how they see fit to do so. The fact is there is always going to be someone pissed off about a release, whether 1 year later, or 10 years later.

And if you read all I typed I agree with you, as I said people have the right to make money and waiting for "the timing of a release" ain't payin' anyone's bills. If she apologized for that, then good. It wasn't her judgment. She's probably protective of Prince and his legacy, but shit - we all are on some level, aren't we? The only difference is we weren't on the payroll. We're all invested in him though. (I think I did know about the real estate thing, which is cool. I don't think I could do that.)

She could have reached out to Shelby privately if she had issues with the timing of her album release. No need to air that out in public. Though I don't think she needed to make public that she once had an intimate relationship with Prince either, especially when she claims it was supposed to stay private.

Wouldn't you think same should apply to all associates? Some of them have been quite vocal against one another lately. I don't find it professional.

That said, Elisa is one of my favorite. Very little drama and very good singing.

Yes. And I'm not aware of Shelby being vocal against anyone publicly.

Me neither. Shelby Johson, Liv, and Elisa are rather professional in my eyes. Could it be why Prince kept them around.

For some reasons, drama involves relationships Prince severed. Wondering why wink

Exactly! Thought the same thing - never liked that she made that public while declaring it was private.

The guy who runs PP said they had to spend several million dollars renovating the place and that money couldn't come from the Estate because the tax man comes first. I wonder if Elisa knows that.

But,but, BUT she did most of Sheila's concerts last year, um, doing P. She's upset like the rest of Prince's "girls". Yet, she didn't hesitate to tell her story of them sleeping together. Whatever. I adore, adore, adore Shelby.

I was wondering about that.

I paid somewhere around $100 dollars for my first celebration in 2000 and attended private parties for I think $12. Prince was there 9/10 times jamming with musicians. It was the best experience ever. Needless to say I met some great people there...

The price of the celebration is the most expensive I've ever seen and there must be a reason for that. confused

Okay, I re-read her original quote about their "relationship" and she put it in quotes. I am not sure what that means, but it is vague enough to still be somewhat private. People are not always consistent but she has stood firm that she didn't want to perform at the Celebration..so its her choice and she is sticking to it.

I have no allegiance to Graceland holdings or Tyka or Omarr but the idea that they're charging these prices just to line their own pockets is absurd. And now knowing that they had to spend millions to get PP up to code and the money couldn't come from the Estate...well it's got to come from somewhere. The Graceland guy says the majority of $$ from ticket sales is being plowed right back into PP. I have no reason to assume he's lying. But then again I don't buy into this whole narrative that everyone is just out to make money off Prince.

And here is where the 'latter' bandmembers are starting to act out.

.
I think coming up to the anniversary of Prince's death is like a full moon.

.

Who is to really tell anyone how to express themselves?
.
I mean if the actual musicians were not musicians and jumped out of nowhere to do music, would be one thing, but music in all ways is how they make their living. Mayte aside(that is being talked about enough in other places) what would be the appropriate time for Shelby? Should she go get a 9 - 5 until she feels others will allow her to make music and not be accused of cashing in?

Let the 80s band members/proteges do the 1978-1988 stuff

Let the 90s band members do the 1991- stuff

let the 2000s focus on stuff from then etc

.

I think that would be cool, that way people can be dedicated to time period concerts and stylise music that wasn't often heard live from then.

FlyOnTheWall

I think Elisa's comments are unfortunate, just as when she decided to reveal that she was once sleeping with Prince. Why even go there? Is it to garner attention for herself and her Las Vegas show? I wonder what kind of songs does she sing with her band? Something tells me that at least some of them are Prince songs. Is anybody knocking her "doing her own thing"?

Moreover, there is nothing wrong with the Celebration recognizing the first year mark since his passing. The price they are charging for FOUR days of activities, panel discussions by Prince associates and emerging Prince scholars, in addition to performances by LEGENDS of the MLPS Sound is not unreasonable at all. Just look into the registration fees for the average business or academic conference. These prices are right in line with those. The bottom line is that Paisley Park has to have operating revenue. Prince, himself, held the first Celebrations at PP and I think that he would be pleased that people are traveling from around the world to show their love for him and visit his "house."

interview from july 1999

NEIL : While filming Graffiti Bridge, didn't you feel awkward miming to the vocals on "Love Machine", when the album credits them to Elisa? Given that you were playing the part of Prince's girlfriend in the movie, surely it would have made more sense to have featured a song or two of your own?

She released her second album I Am in 1990 recorded at Prince's Paisley Park recording studio after she had contributed, as a backing vocalist, to the soundtracks of Graffiti Bridge and Batman. Several songs from the album were produced and written by Prince. The album included the single "On The Way Up", which was a Top 30 hit in the U.S. and Top 20 in Australia. Fiorillo also appeared on Prince's album Diamonds And Pearls being the backing vocalist on two songs.

Wow. Well, she didn't worry about coming out with it now.

And the "was one that was secret" comment... some of these women were really silly. Keeping a relationship a secret is basically the same as saying they don't want people to know about it and they should have asked themselves why. All this "not telling no one just proves how much i respect Prince and that he can trust me, otherwise I'll be out of here in no time" mantra served him well...

That is why you called me after 20 years. You trusted me. I wish I could have been there to protect you from whatever or whoever it was that let you leave this world. One day....one day we will. 4ever in our hearts.

Hey, that 1990-1992 time period was from when he had just met Mayte up until she was finally 18...

Hmmm...Interesting timeline.

No wonder he wanted things kept secret. That was also during overlapping time periods with Devin Devasquez, Nona Gaye, Carmen Electra and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone or two, but that's all I can think of right now.

No wonder he couldn't get all that music and projects to full fruition lol

I think Devin was done with Prince by 1987 or earlier she said, the 'romantic' relationship ended in 1985 in one interview or 86

replace her with actress Troy Beyer
