He never looked the same with the other women

Prince and Vanity will go down as in iconic pair in rock n roll history.

Nothing compares to them. None come close.

Oh and good for you getting the shirt!! Wear it with pride.

It's disheartening to see how some of these books and the associates who participates in them, ostracize her from being any sort of inspiration to Prince. Or at least tries to... (We're not clueless.) In the book "The Making Of Purple Rain", in which the author interviews bandmates and associates affiliated with the movie, Vanity is hardly mentioned. Not as a lover, not even as a collaborator. The discredit is so obvious that more than one review on Amazon and Goodreads calls out the author for the lack of information about her affiliation with Prince and Purple Rain. Many people are starting to notice the bias. Even causal fans who remembers her. I'm so proud of Prince for setting the record straight before he passed, by acknowledging what they meant to each other, and for also setting the record straight on The Beautiful Ones. It's obvious he got fed up of hearing the false speculations about that song. He was on a rampage in that Ebony article, lol... lol

I'm sure we've all ventured in that "M2" thread where Vanity's name was banded about a bit. I don't want to overtake that thread as it's not a thread about Vanity, but there still seems to be a dispute with some people about Vanity inspiring The Beautiful Ones, Since there seems to be a reading comprehension issue with Prince's cryptic announcement, let's dissect it shall we? I'm assuming it's okay to do it here since we've been pretty much discussing all things Vanity in this thread. I don't want to start a separate thread. There are three Vanity threads already. She can't help it if she's that awesome... Lol. I can't believe that there is still even a debate about this song! Susannah Melvoin and Susan Rogers name will be mentioned as they are a part of the article and the debate, but I would just like to state that this is nothing against their character, this post is only based on what Prince has said himself about the song The Beautiful Ones and their involvement in the discussion as such.

Down below are the specific comments by Prince in regards to "The Beautiful Ones."
Prince comments will be listed as exhibits. lol

A link to the interview I am about to dissect. https://www.facebook.com/...788385046/

Exhibit A

EBONY: Do you ever see yourself writing a memoir?

Prince: "You ever heard of checking your list to see who’s naughty and who’s nice? I just let people talk. I was talking to somebody about The Beautiful Ones. They were speculating as to who I was singing about. But they were completely wrong." People were speculating that The Beautiful Ones was written about Susannah Melvoin. Susan Rogers had been quoted many a times saying that The Beautiful Ones was inspired by Susannah Melvoin in all the books about Prince. Books like, Possessed, DMSR, and The making Of Purple Rain to name a few, so it's pretty obvious that Susannah Melvoin was the one Prince was speaking of when he said... "They were speculating as to who I was singing about but they were completely wrong..."

He says, "If they look at it, it’s very obvious." And then points out two lyrics from the song and explained how obvious it was to see who and what inspired them... First lyric being “Do you want him or do you want me,” Which he says, "that was written for that scene in Purple Rain specifically. Where Morris Day would be sitting with Apollonia, and there’d be this back and forth."

He then goes on to the second lyrics to tell us what inspired those words, “And also, "The beautiful ones you always seem to lose,” He explained the reason behind those lyrics by saying, "Vanity had just quit the movie", And just like that he just told us that the reason he wrote those lyrics was due to Vanity's departure from his life. Vanity inspired the lyrics "The Beautiful Ones you always seem to lose." The title of the song is called "The Beautiful Ones" Who inspired this song? Very clearly... Vanity.

He then reprimand's the person (Susannah Melvoin) who he thought was going around saying that the song was about her. "To then speculate, “Well, he wrote that song about me”? Afterwards you go, “Who are you? Why do you think that you’re part of the script that way? And why would you go around saying stuff like that?” He was pissed.

He continued on his rant in Princely fashion to explain that there were so many misconceptions about his songs that he just let people talk. It would be too much to refute. "So we just let people talk and say whatever they want to say. Nine times out of 10, trust me, what’s out there now, I wouldn’t give nary one of these folks the time of day. That’s why I don’t say anything back, because there’s so much that’s wrong."

Exhibit B

He wasn't finished yet... Later down the interview he called out a certain engineer (we all know it's Susan Rogers because she was the one saying all these songs were for Susannah Melvoin) he goes on to explain that Susan Rogers came to her conclusions about his songs by speculation alone. "They get down to, “See, what he was thinking at that specific time was… His mindset at the time…” They psychoanalyze you."

He then goes on to complain about a statement she had made concerning the Vault "There was one engineer who said that their sole purpose in life was to get the stuff out of the vault, and get it copied so it wasn’t lost to the world. I’m trying to figure out if that’s illegal. Should I fear for my safety that you might need some medical attention?" You want to come up in my vault and you feel like that belongs to you and that’s your purpose? You better find something to do. That’s scary."

EBONY: I’ve read “The Beautiful Ones” was based on Susannah Melvoin.

Exhibit C

When the interviewer directly told him that he'd read that the song was based on Susannah Melvoin, Prince admonished, "Any ballad like that, you know it’s not going to be about anything, uh, what’s the word? Carnal. It’s not gonna even be based in flesh. Regardless of what I’m singing about, it’s all spiritual. This is a channel. I’m trying to do “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” It’s not about somebody human that I’m looking at right now. It wouldn’t have worked if it was. This was literally for that character. And that’s why it worked. Everybody thinks the song is about them. Let's be clear here. Exhibit A up top still exists- Prince's first comment explaining what the two lyrics meant is still there in this article. Didn't go anywhere. Thus, "The Beautiful Ones you always seem to lose" was still inspired by Vanity's departure... He was trying to explain that when singing a song like The Beautiful Ones he would Chanel the inspiration from something motivational. This comment was just a progression of his explanation that the song wasn't about Susannah Melvoin.

Then In the spirit of being funny Prince said. “This song’s about me and the other one’s about Bob Seger.” falloff

But wait!! There is a bonus exhibit D!

During his tribute to Vanity on stage at the Piano and Microphone show, before singing a touching rendition Of "The Beautiful Ones", Prince backed up his comment about the song being Inspired by Vanity. He told the audience: “I am new to this playing alone. I thank you all for being patient. I’m trying to stay focused, it’s a little heavy for me tonight ... "She knows about this one.” Letting the world know that The Beautiful Ones, out of a variety of songs, was a song she knew she had inspired. He then played Purple Rain’s The Beautiful Ones (ending the song whispering “Denise, Denise”) This was way more than a "dedication..." He backed up what he said in the Ebony Article by telling us the song was about her yet again.

Still not sure? This is what Susannah Melvoin said about the song.

Exhibit E! Facts!

Fact: Susannah Melvoin: "I can't say the song was exactly our story, but it was written during that time. He wasn't always specifically writing about what he was going through because he also had to be consistent with the Purple Rain story line, but he was drawing from things that had happened in his life." (Yea, like Vanity's departure, like he said in exhibit A. Vanity had just left him...)

Fun Facts! Exhibit (F) This part could be just for fun or taken seriously, you decide....

In exhibit (C) Prince said
"This was literally for that character." If we want to get technical, we also know that Prince operates on the cryptic, Vanity was the first "Character" in Purple Rain.. (but, even if this was a straight forward comment... Exhibit A is stil up top where he said Vanity inspired those specific lyrics...)

More freaky coincidence..

1-When asked who the song Forever In my Life was about, Prince said, Susannah "She Knows"
2-Crediting the song Orgasm to Vanity, Prince credited.. "She knows" as the recipient.
3-When revealing that The Beautiful Ones was inspired by Vanity in the Piano and Microphone tribute, Prince said "She knows"about this one..." lol

All jokes aside, Prince before he passed wanted us all to know that Vanity was partially the inspiration for The Beautiful Ones. He even went as far as to reiterate that fact in a tribute to honor her in death. He wasn't lying. There really shouldn't be a debate about this song anymore...

Vanity died a long, long time ago. Her earthly body left much later. Prince loved Vanity. Did he even know Denise? He didnt love her like he did Vanity certainly. Thats why its silly to hold onto the whole prince and vanity fantasy. That waz over a long time ago when denise laid vanity to rest at the same time laying to rest any dreams of a prince and vanity romance. She made it quite clear with the name change and her ministry that vanity didnt exist anymore. Prince accepted that and moved on. Lets all do the same.

I guess this person thinks he/she knows Prince more than Prince knew Prince. To all Prince/Denise supporters out there, do not let anyone stop you from talking about Prince and Denise here or anywhere else. They are asking you to stop doing what they don't like you doing. They are not asking you to stop out of respect for Denise or Prince. You already know which ones have a problem because they give themselves away by constantly trying to post against what you post. People that don't agree can simply not participate in the discussion or just say you disagree and keep it moving. Why linger in a duscussion that you don't agree with? They linger because it's annoying to them watching us Prince/Denise supporters engage in a discussion about Prince loving a woman that's not the woman they'd rather be discussing. Why not simply ignore them and keep on posting about Prince/Denise? You're not hurting Denise nor Prince by posting what you feel. It's useless going back and forward with these kind of people because no matter what you type, if it's not to their satisfaction they will still come back with something against your statement.

Seems to me Prince was more affected by Michael Jackson's death than Vanity's. The card in which he called Vanity "darling" love he also told her he won't be calling her, and will instead write. So whatever was going on in his head, he seemed not to be pining for her at all. But he holed up in his room for days when Michael died. But they certainly took some sexy pics together.

Thus, "The Beautiful Ones You always seem to lose" was still inspired by Vanity's departure... This comment was just a progression as to the song not being inspired by Susannah Melvoin. Then In the spirit of being funny Prince said. “This song’s about me and the other one’s about Bob Seger.” falloff But wait!! There is a bonus exhibit D! During his tribute to Vanity on stage at the Piano and Microphone show, after the encore, Prince backed up his comment about The Beautiful Ones being Inspired by Vanity. He told the audience: “I am new to this playing alone. I thank you all for being patient. I’m trying to stay focused, it’s a little heavy for me tonight ... "She knows about this one.” Letting the world know that The Beautiful Ones was one particular song that she knew she had inspired. He then played Purple Rain’s The Beautiful Ones (ending the song whispering “Denise, Denise”) This was way more than a "dedication..." He backed up what he said in the Ebony Article by telling us the song was about her yet again. Still not sure? Exhibit E! Vanity had just left him...) Fun Facts! Exhibit (F) This part could be just for fun or taken seriously, you decide.... In exhibit (C) Prince said "This was literally for that character." If we want to get technical, we also know that Prince operates on the cryptic, Vanity was the first "Character" in Purple Rain.. More freaky coincidence.. 1-When asked who the song Forever In my Life was about, Prince said, Susannah "She Knows" 2-Crediting the song Orgasm to Vanity, Prince credited.. "She knows" as the recipient. 3-When revealing that The Beautiful Ones was inspired by Vanity in the Piano and Microphone tribute, Prince said "She knows"about this one..." lol All jokes aside, Prince before he passed wanted us all to know that Vanity was partially the inspiration for The Beautiful Ones. He even went as far as to reiterate that fact in a tribute to honor her in death. He wasn't lying. There really shouldn't be a debate about this song anymore... [Edited 5/6/17 17:43pm]

The only facts that you've stated are what you've bolded, that Prince said in that interview. Everything else is YOUR interpertation and not FACT.

Wait...

PennyPurple, I just thought of something! If you know that everything I've said in the bolded is fact.. Then I've done my job for the day! clapping hug

Down below are the specific comments by Prince in regards to "The Beautiful Ones." Prince comments will be listed as exhibits. lol A link to the interview I am about to dissect. https://www.facebook.com/...788385046/ Exhibit A EBONY: Do you ever see yourself writing a memoir? "They were speculating as to who I was singing about but they were completely wrong..." He says, "If they look at it, it’s very obvious." And then points out two lyrics from the song and explained how obvious it was to see who and what inspired them... First lyric being “Do you want him or do you want me,” Which he says, "that was written for that scene in Purple Rain specifically. Where Morris Day would be sitting with Apollonia, and there’d be this back and forth." He then goes on to the second lyrics to tell us what inspired those words, “And also, "The beautiful ones you always seem to lose,” He explained the reason behind those lyrics by saying, "Vanity had just quit the movie", And just like that he just told us that the reason he wrote those lyrics was due to Vanity's departure from his life. That’s why I don’t say anything back, because there’s so much that’s wrong." Exhibit B He wasn't finished yet... Later down the interview he called out a certain engineer (we all know it's Susan Rogers because she was the one saying all these songs were for Susannah Melvoin) he goes on to explain that Susan Rogers came to her conclusions about his songs by speculation alone. "They get down to, “See, what he was thinking at that specific time was… His mindset at the time…” They psychoanalyze you." He then goes on to complain about a statement she had made concerning the Vault "There was one engineer who said that their sole purpose in life was to get the stuff out of the vault, and get it copied so it wasn’t lost to the world. I’m trying to figure out if that’s illegal. Should I fear for my safety that you might need some medical attention?" You want to come up in my vault and you feel like that belongs to you and that’s your purpose? You better find something to do. That’s scary." EBONY: I’ve read “The Beautiful Ones” was based on Susannah Melvoin. Exhibit C When asked the question directly if the beautiful Ones was based on Susannah Melvoin, Prince said, "Any ballad like that, you know it’s not going to be about anything, uh, what’s the word? Exhibit A up top still exists-Prince's first comment explaining what the two lyrics meant is still there in this article. “This song’s about me and the other one’s about Bob Seger.” falloff But wait!! There is a bonus exhibit D! Weather they ignore his words due to their animosity towards Vanity is at their own discretion. This was more fun for me than anything else. The problem isn't Prince's words, it's everyone else's words saying what they think he meant.

I.missed this!
That same letter stated to use email so they could complete/finish their thoughts.
I do not understand why that has to be debated. They clearly communicated and had so my h to say he said email woukd serve them better.
The need to discount her as someone he valued in his life is mind boggling.

God forbid I enter this thread but can someone dig up for me a time Susannah specifically said that Strange Relationship and Adore were about her.

Maybe my memory is faulty but I seem to recall she said the The Beautiful Ones was kind of about her and Prince's relationship but also written with the film in mind (i accept your evidence above). I think she (or someone) also laid claim to Condition of the Heart, or at least the Clara Bow line in it, and Forever in My Life (Prince actually confirmed that one) and If I Was Your Girlfriend. Oh and some of the more negative songs like Big Tall Wall and Empty Room. I just don't recall her saying anything about Strange Relationship or Adore though.

Oh for what it's worth I don't mind if they're all about Vanity, i'm just trying to find some evidence for what people are claiming in here.

I think his focus for the songs was spiritual, for the woman who could be everything to a man, so not for anyone human since no woman can be everything to a man and vice versa. But without that fantasy of perfection you'd get songs like I'd make love to you forever Baby but I'm outta viagra and you're doing your nails.

Here is the link to an article where Susannah says Strange Relationship was inspired by her. I just realized that she did not mention The Beautiful Ones in this article. Even though Susan Rogers suspected TBO was about her, SM never seemed confident in claiming it. I did hear others say she did claim it at one point, but it seems to me after all I've heard her say about the song, she eventually tried to back away from those claims. Down below is her quote from the article. http://beautifulnightschi...-with.html

Susannah Melvoin on Prince songs that she inspired: "The infamous “Wally,” which no one heard because he destroyed the tape. There's a huge story behind that. “Strange Relationship;” “Nothing Compares 2 U;” In a Large Room with No Light;” “If I was Your Girlfriend.” God, you know there's more and I can't remember..."

Yea, Spiritual. Thats why he said... "The Beautiful ones you always seem to lose" "Vanity had just quit the movie." Yup, he bought her name up for spiritual reasons... Huh uh... Not that those lyrics had anything to do with her departure or anything like that. No way... Nope. She wasn't even human. He just mentioned her name out of nowhere with those lyrics because, because... Well, for spiritual reasons... lol
