I read an article (I was trying to find it again with no luck) that said many didn't know he was there because it was only for a bit. He Sat in the balcony but was being harassed by fans and left because he realized it was causing a disturbance to her memorial. If anyone has this article can you post it? I think some are reading Alex Hahn's book that does not state this, and only says he met up with former associates afterwards. Whatever the case may be, Prince had his memorial on stage for her. Hours before his first Australian gig, Prince learnt his ex-girlfriend Vanity (real name Denise Matthews) had died in the US, aged 57, due to renal failure.

The pair had met in 1980, with Prince bestowing the stage name of Vanity as he felt looking at her was like looking at the female version of himself.

She’d go on to inspire some of his biggest early hits, including Little Red Corvette. He also created a band around her, Vanity 6, for which he wrote songs and produced.

Vanity was originally cast as the female lead in Prince’s star-making film Purple Rain in 1984, but when the pair split shortly before filming started, she was replaced by Apollonia — another singer Prince had renamed.

After splitting with Prince, Vanity dated Adam Ant and Billy Idol. Motley Crue rocker Nikki Sixx wrote in his memoirs about going on crack cocaine binges with her in 1987. After a 1994 overdose, Vanity reverted back to Denise and became a born-again Christian.

By the time she died in a California hospital, Matthews had long needed to undergo an hour of dialysis each day.

The news of her passing shattered Prince. He lingered in his hotel room, getting to the first show a little later than planned — even operating on Princetime, he was usually a very punctual performer.

“He literally found out a few hours before he was due on stage,” Dainty reveals. “One of the guys around him said, ‘Oh, we’ve got a problem’. It was breaking news in the afternoon, our time.

“We were all a little bit concerned — his bodyguard and his assistant. That was a very unfortunate day. You wouldn’t have been surprised if you’d got the call saying he needs to postpone the show for 24 hours, he’s too much in grief. But he went on. He was very emotional on stage.”

Within moments of walking on stage that night, Prince stated: “I just found out someone dear to us has passed away, I’m gonna dedicated this song to her.”

He then launched into Little Red Corvette, with a touch of Dirty Mind.

He also changed the name “Electra” in The Ladder to “Vanity” and tweaked the lyrics to state: “[color=darkred]He had a subject named Vanity, he loved her with a passion uncontested,[/color] one day her smile went away.”

After the encore, Prince told the audience: “I am new to this playing alone. I thank you all for being patient. I’m trying to stay focused, it’s a little heavy for me tonight ... she knows about this one.”

He then played Purple Rain’s The Beautiful Ones (ending the song whispering “Denise, Denise”), before veering off script.

“Can I tell you a story about Vanity? Or should I tell you a story about Denise? Her and I used to love each other deeply. She loved me for the artist I was, I loved her for the artist she was trying to be.

“As much as we loved we used to fight, she was very headstrong because she knew she was the finest woman in the world. She never missed the opportunity to tell you that as well.”

He shared a tale of a fight where he had threatened to throw her in a pool.

“Back then I used to have a best friend security guard, his name was Chick (Huntsberry). Chick was six foot six and all muscle, except for his stomach, where he kept an assortment of fried foods.

“One day Vanity and I got into a fight, I told her that if she didn’t stop I’d throw her in the pool. She said ‘You can’t throw me in that pool you’re too little’. So I said ‘Chick, throw her in the pool’. I probably shouldn’t be telling you that story but I’m sure she’d want us to celebrate her life.”

Morgan says the show was unlike any Prince had ever done.

“He never really talks about people in his past,” Morgan says. “He was a very private person. A lot of the songs he played that night were about her. I’d never seen him that open and full of emotion.

“In hindsight it felt like he was winding something up. With the talk of him writing a memoir, which is something you never thought he’d do, he’d toned down his clothing. He wore the same outfit for every show on that tour. That is weird for Prince. He was doing his own hair and make-up. He was talking about his father. He was getting older. He wasn’t as agile on stage.

“But I didn’t realise he was going to die a few months later.”

After that first show, some fans complained that Prince played for only 80 minutes, not two hours.

“I didn’t pay $400 to hear Prince being sad,” one not-so-sympathetic fan was overheard saying in the foyer.

Vanity’s death also curtailed Prince’s usual afterparties — in the past he’d perform a whole other show after his ‘public’ concert.

“He was grieving in Melbourne,” Dainty explains. “He turned up, he did the shows, he went back to the hotel. The second night in Melbourne he went to a club, but he didn’t perform. He danced a bit until 3am, then left. Otherwise he was at the venue 30 minutes before showtime, that was it. We had the dressing room set up beautifully for him. I think he maybe sat in it for 10 minutes.”

He also changed the name “Electra” in The Ladder to “Vanity” and tweaked the lyrics to state: “He had a subject named Vanity, HE LOVED HER WITH A PASSION UNCONTESTED,

Wow, I heard his tribute to her a few times and did not even process that he changed the lyrics to The Ladder from saying "She loved him with a passion uncontested" to saying He loved her with a passion uncontested, until going over this article now. [Edited 4/23/17 12:49pm]

Yes, he did say that. I think he still cared very deeply about her. He was devestated, and I think that loss really started to wear on him in the last couple of months of his life.

Yup, this is HUUUUGE to me! It's so deep because whenever I used to listened to the Ladder, I had always felt like he was singing about Vanity when he said "There was a king in sin-aplenty. He had a subject named Electra, She loved him with a passion uncontested- then One day her smile went away." So now, to hear him change the lyrics to say "He had a subject named Vanity, HE loved HER with a passion uncontested". I'm just floored... What a beautiful thing to tell the world about her before he left us. It's heart wrenching but so beautiful... Very revealing month for Prince and Vanity fans. First the rumors that Strange Relationship was about her got a solid confirmation by a track recording author. There is a new book coming out in the fall with Prince track recording sessions by a new author name Duane Tudahl. The book is called PRINCE AND THE PURPLE RAIN ERA STUDIO SESSIONS (1983-1984). It's available for pre- order on Amazon. He says Strange Relationship was inspired by Vanity. I realize Susan Rodgers and others at that time seemed infatuated with Prince and Susannah as a couple so we get all about them. Hey don't worry I got you!!! Yes Susannah tried to take claim for a lot of songs back then.....it was the SM PR in full motion. A lot of bias geared towards SM. Her crew Susan Rogers her sister and others were Team Susannah all the way. But I'm so sorry I never ever ever ever thought Beautiful Ones, Adore, If I Was Your Girlfriend and other songs were about her!!!! I mean Vanity broke Prince's heart, he admitted this!! So from his heartbreak u had a lot of great emotional songs released. And to me for SM to take credit for so many songs being about her was just being conceited and cocky!!!! That's why I have so much respect for Vanity. I never heard her say to the media this song is about me or that song is about me. I always knew what she(Vanity) meant to him.

Her crew Susan Rogers her sister and others were Team Susannah all the way. But I'm so sorry I never ever ever ever thought Beautiful Ones, Adore, If I Was Your Girlfriend and other songs were about her!!!! I mean Vanity broke Prince's heart, he admitted this!! So from his heartbreak u had a lot of great emotional songs released. And to me for SM to take credit for so many songs being about her was just being conceited and cocky!!!! That's why I have so much respect for Vanity. I never heard her say to the media this song is about me or that song is about me. I always knew what she(Vanity) meant to him.

I revisited the Jill Jones podcast over the weekend and really took my time to listen to the things she had to say about Vanity. Some of the things she says were very enlightening. She mentions how Vanity was discriminated against back then by many people because of how beautiful she was. She said people didn't give her a chance, even though she was such a sweet soul. She reiterated that she saw it with her own eyes how people would treat her differently because of the way she looked. She pretty much confirmed one of my suspicions why some of the people who inspired the narrative in books like "Possessed" and the revised " The Rise" tried to diminish her significance in Prince's life. In the "Revised" version nothing was updated about her, not even the fact that The Beautiful Ones was partly inspired by her. It still says it's for Susannah, even though Prince said it's partly about Vanity in that Ebony issue, and alluded to it again on the P&M tour. To be fair though, I think it was more Susan Rogers speculating that TBO was about SM. SM even admitted in the book "The Making Of Purple Rain" that TBO wasn't exactly their story. I think she just ran with whatever Susan Rogers and Karen Krattinger, who was one of her best friends and Prince's general Manager at the time were saying. They wanted to support her relationship with Prince. It's pretty easy to see how they could theorize every song being about her, (wanting it to be about her) as they were her close friends and liked the idea of them as a couple. Their enthusiasm for Prince and SM relationship made them read a little bit too much into some of the songs and they assumed wrongly as we are finding out now. Anyway this book is a joke. The author only mentions the part in Prince's tribute to Vanity where he speaks about throwing her in the pool, but blatantly left out the more significant, Prince acknowledging that they used to love each other deeply. Susan and the Leeds and the Melvoins and others do not want to ever legitimize Prince's relationship with Vanity. They want to push Susannah as the ulitmate muse and love at that time.

Everyone knows Purple Rain was about Vanity and Prince and since she died and he declared his passion uncontesed - everyone knows.

The writer of that book knows but wants history to see Vanity as a lazy , whorish, drug addict character Prince became so frustrated with he had her thrown in the pool. I am so glad he cleared up Adore , The Beautiful Ones and If I WasYour Girlfriend was another her played when dedicating songs to Vanity. The Susannah myth is being dismantled brick by brick.

Susannah and her supporters know she was not the muse behind everything back then. It gets infuriating. Of course, Vanity was not the muse to everything either but the way they deliberately to totally take Vaanity and hide her in a corner or act as if she did not exist at all is glaring.

How can you discuss the Piano and Mic tours and not mention how distraught Prince was and how he said they loved one another deeply? How? That is downright wrong and deliberate in an attempt to skewthe reality for generations to come.

Denise's/Vanity's story needs to be told and celebrated and not forgotten -she was the ONLY Prince girl to take the media by storm as she did. She and Prince together were hot and sexy . That moment in time is not discussed at all because the ones around like the Melvoins and the writer of the book and Susan Rodgers have deliberately decided to remove Vanity from the narrative.

My hope is that someone who was there will stop being silent and share somethings about Prince and Vanity. This skewing history has to stop.

He gave a gift to those of us who respect Vanity and Denise. He validated her in a way he did not have to. I regret he died before his memoirs could be done. If he was that open during the Pand M tours I would think he would be for his memoirs.
