I read where Wendy and Lisa said they influenced the sound due to instruments they introduced Prince to. I have to find the article. They are always taking credit for his genius but I was not there I cannot say they are not being truthful.

If they did influence sound my thanks to them it is one of my faves. The music grabs me.

They never took credit for their 'Fearless Leaders' genius, never.

But as far as influence, Prince dedicated a song 2 Lisa Wendy & Susannah 10yrs after they were no longer in the band.
And on the wall art in Paisley Park Prince commissioned of his many inspirations Wendy & Lisa were the closest to his image.

And I too am thankful for the time period of music.

They play some instruments on the song (percussion and a sitar-like sound), but it's a bit hard to hear because Prince buried their contribution in the mix. If you compare the final version on SOTT with the demo for Dream Factory where you can hear W&L more clearly, you will notice W&L's input on the final version is almost non-exictent. And to be clear: they didn't write the song, neither music or lyrics. [Edited 4/23/17 10:10am]

Paul, for someone who disses them and the Revolution years so much, you post on everything concerning them.

But I barely rarely ever see you talk much on threads about the NPG or 3rd Eye Girl, maybe I missed it.

I became a fan in 1979 and a diehard fan in 1981. Most people here became diehards in 1984. The Revolution is probably his weakest band. They were an image for MTV more than a band. They are fine and there were some worthy collaborations but I have never understood the fascination with this band or era. He got better and edgier and more creative after the revolution left (1987-1988) and was better and edgier and more creative before they got there (1980-1982).

nod

Even though they had a few interesting ideas, they are over-rated due to emotion and nostalgia mostly. Any of Prince's bands except 3rdEG would smoke the Revolution. The Time smoked the Revolution. lol

I like Dr. Fink though. biggrin

As for Wendy's comments, she knows that it is best for them to stay in their lane if they have any hope of playing a decent show.

Their shows have been amazing and they're selling out and bringing a lot of healing to these fans, that's what lane Wendy's in. We'll see if any of these bands you mentioned will tour with the same attention and ticket sales that the Revolution has behind them. SMH All these years later and people STILL don't get it. Her comment meant that the time frame they were there is open for them to play live, and SOTT was recorded in July of 86 so yes, they were still around. Weird that people have the need to put everything she says under a microscope.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I guess you are reading other "third party writers"' books, because, while some of the people you mention do get quoted, those are not nearly the main people quoted in most of the books I know.

.

On the other hand, my favourite Prince period is the one where Wendy & Lisa and later on Eric Leeds were major influences to the point of being almost equal collaborators. Other periods seem to have less strong influences by band members, although some had quite a few contributions.

.

Still, I don't know if Wendy & Lisa wrote Strange Relationship or not. I don't care. I do appreciate their contribution to the final released product.

When you guys say "wrote" Strange Relationship, are you speaking of the music or the lyrics?

'Genius' does not happen in a vacuum. Wendy and Lisa are merely trying to describe the personal and creative relationship they had with him. It's a nuanced thing they are describing. They truth is they are very careful to in how they describe what went down. The people who criticize them are generally not songwriters or musicians that understand how music gets made. Protecting this idea that Prince was a serious ngular genius who didn't borrow and take from anyone is pointless.

Also this focus on W & L is just inappropriate. I said it before, but nobody lost their shit when Tommy Barbarella claimed 90s NPG was Prince's 'best' band.

You're right, creativity, period, doesn't happen in a vacuum. Being with the right people, even being in the right physical space can have such an impact. And I also get the vibe that the people who compain the most about comments like these probably haven't written songs.

Credits to people who didn't actually perform

I recently learned that Sheila sang background on irresistible Bitch. Wendy was credited but didn't actually perform. Any other examples were Prince gave performance or writing credit to people for things they didn't do ( especially on his own albums)?

I care about facts. That is what this is all about. Not prejudice. Not trolling. Facts. Doesn't mean I'm always right. The quote about IB was, as far as I recall, based on a statement by Jill Jones. At least I get the facts right more often than you do.

Don't call my a liar. That's not cool. I don't think I have ever commented on former band members solo careers. What I'm interested in is that the music released by Prince is correctly credited. There seems to be more myths that need to be cleared up in connection with the Revolution than with any other of Prince's bands.

You are not going to do it bro

Dude, you sit up on Lisa & Susannah's pages waiting for them to say something you don't like so you can bring it back to the org and bash it. Similarly to what you did with Jill.

what fucking facts do you get right Paul. You join in on any 'I have the Melvoins' thread like that other one that is clearly about hate and bashing. Not facts.
.
As long as you have been around, you still choose not to listen to the piece where she talked about Purple Rain as others have shared the exact FACTUAL place it came from. And you still don't care to know the truth, and if you did watch/listen to it and continue to push your idea that 'wendy said she wrote purple rain' then you are 100% not caring about any facts.

.

If you were even half concerned about a general respect for the music, you would talk about all the music. Andre Cymone claimed he wrote and created stuff too, but I've never seen you try to straight him out.

You do deny being a troll and and really attempt to portray offense at <gasp> being called out on it. omfg

Yup. I deny being a troll. I just dislike it when myth becomes fact.

Like when Jill mistakenly said it was Sheila E not Wendy on IB and 1 2 3 you post it on the org to find all the rest of the stuff they were credited on wrong.

See: your number 2 comments aren't about musical truth.

It's a troll.

And your diversionary tactics to avoid that truth such as the comment above... Ooh they don't really help your claims.

But seeing this dance you try is definitely something! lol

I didn't say "musical truth". Point 2 is obviously a possible way to interpret the image. So inthat sense true. But do we really have to bicker about details?

See, that is not getting the facts.

That is not being honest.

You know Prince posted that as a result of the news of Bobby Z having the heart attack. That is the Fact. So why do you need a possible interpretation. That is not about facts.

Details ie facts, don't you know they go together?

Obviously an interpretation of an image is not fact. But I'm not sure what you were trying to prove by posting the image in the first place. But that how it usually goes. Someone citicizes Wendy (or Sheila E or someone lese you hold dear) and you respond by a sort of filibuster tactic posting endless, random quotes and pictures that somehow are supposed to prove how great your favorites are.

Actually it is an 'attempt' at a fact and creating a myth(as you said)

Girl, ok. What you said was

What I'm interested in is that the music released by Prince is correctly credited. There seems to be more myths that need to be cleared up in connection with the Revolution than with any other of Prince's bands

Your "interpretations" have nothing to do with the correct crediting of Prince's music. It does reinforce your history of dragging them. At every possible moment.

But do we have to bicker about details? lol
