Would be better than all the Kitty Kelly type tattletale books that everyone on this site cling to as fact. But then again..... What else do everyone has to go off of than 3rd party written books. The interviews that they have been doing have shown they have far more to share than what has been said in the past. I personally would rather read a first person account than something written by someone who was interpreting someone elses experience. But you proved my comment that people on this list would not welcome it.

I would love a book set, by eras

1. the Demo years (1976/77)

2. For You (1978 - )

3. Prince (1979 - )

4. Dirty Mind (1980 - )

5a. Controversy (1981 - )

b. the Time (1981 -)

and on and on

And have pieces by the people involved bandmembers, proteges, tourmanager, engineers, photographers, hair dresser/stylist etc

hardcover

Sure it would be great. I think people wanted the book Prince was doing to be like that. Now all we have are people who were there in the room at the time. But because its not said by Prince, some people will say its all lies if it doesn't line up with their preconceived narrative. 100% Prince all the time with no input by anyone. Content aside.... The book or books alone will spawn accusations trying to make a buck off the bones of Prince....

I wanted Prince's book years ago when he was talking about he doesn't look back and such.

Some people will still not believe it if Prince said it, if it doesn't go with their perception.

Of course they will lol those are people who don't really care about Prince's legacy, a legacy to be carried on into the future after we are all gone.

I think that as far as books go dealing with Prince's different musical eras in the studio, Duane Tudahl's new book series that he worked on for 20 years is the best bet.

Keep in mind that Wendy was in the room with Prince more than anyone else on this list. She has a better idea as to what she and the other members of the Revolution contributed. We know that Prince didn't give proper credit to people who did contribute to things over the years AND had been sued for it. I think the song Raspberry Beret is an example. In January of 2016 at a piano and microphone show Prince told a story how he met Lisa. He also said that during a jam session that Lisa came up with the main line to the music of Raspberry Beret. But yet she was not given proper credit for that. From that tape, she does have a good case to sue and get some back royalties that she is owed. I know I was shocked to hear him admit this. But not shocked to the fact that she did write it. How many other songs did he do this and not give proper credit? I would love to see the members of the Revolution come forward and write a book or books. Unfortunately what would be said (and this thread proves this) that people would say that they are lying. But the real loss is the book that Prince was going to write. This is the only book that some people on this list would believe. But would he have gotten honest and told the truth they way he did that that show? That's an answer we will never have. But the base of SOTT is Dream Factory. Wendy & Lisa and the rest of the Revolution were around that that point. What elements from when they were around were left when SOTT was released only the people involved will know. Wendy is one of those people....

We really need whole books by band members to tell us "Hey, I came up with that one drum beat?

falloff

In a recent interview Wendy is asked what songs the Revolution will play on their upcoming tour. Her answer: "We will perform the catalog that belongs to our band. Everything from “I Would Die 4 U” to “Sign ‘O’ the Times.”" So now she implies that she had a hand in writing SOTT.

They never said that, you did.

You forget that Wendy & Lisa worked on production and played on stuff on Sign O The Times, and The Revolution was on that album in one full song. So for them to play "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" is quite reasonable. It's pretty obvious that they didn't write the title track, but if you remember where SOTT was derived from, you'll realize how much their band was part of stuff to that point.

IWD4U is a song title, SOTT is both a song title and an album title. This creates a certain ambiguity as to what she means. People will take this and run with it. This thread is proof of that. People now claim that W&L probably went uncredited on many of the songs on SOTT without any evidence whatsoever. Wendy knows how this works. This is how she usually operates.

As to the idea that W&L deserves credit because SOTT "came out of" the Deam Factory project, so what? The songs that the band contributed to were left off the album (with a couple of exceptions, IGBABN bing the most important).

The wooh is on the one!

Strange Relationships and Slow Love as well.

but again the purpose and energy of the albums music was created during the Dream Factory sessions.

From the Time. to the earlier Prince band they all have talked about how things were rehearsed and then how Prince recorded. Prince would flesh out songs with the band(s) and then recorded it either himself, with the full band or partial.

.

So when we hear a song like Screams of Passion (if that is all Prince on the released) we also heard him with the Revolution working on the song. So to say 'they had nothing to do with it' is wrong.

.

And yes it was Wendy on Irresistable Bitch, not Sheila E.

This debate always confuse me. Every book I've read said whatever songs the Revs were involved in from Dream Factory, Prince purposely left out the songs that they were involved in, or he reworked whatever input they had. He literally went out of his way to do this to avoid this debate. It was intensional. He knew what he was doing because he wanted to do this album alone to prove something. You can see the songs that were left out on The Vault. Why is this still a thing? Am I missing something? How were they involved in SOTT apart from being there when he started Dream Factory? He wrote, sang and composed the music for all these songs. Even if The Rev's did contribute to a drum beat or two, isn't it gone now? Everyone should be able to say they were involved in all his albums if that is all it takes. Is that all it takes to be involved in someone's artistry?

the Vault only has information as it comes forth.

Jill Jones was also backing vocals on the Glamorous Life, Chocolate and a few other songs, that the Vault did not have her listed. And until Jesse Johnson and Morris Day talked about it, they did not have them down on songs either.

.

how is that even possible, IGBABN (live Revolution on the Parade tour) Wendy & Lisa are still on Strange Relationships and he credits them, Slow Love(co written with Carol Davis)Wendy & Lisa sing and play instruments

Susannah Melvoin -backing vocals SOTT Play In the Sunshine, Ballad of Dorothy Parker, (Rock Hard In a Funky Place) co-written with Starfish & Coffee inspiration for Forever In My Life etc

.
I mean the energy of most of the music was stimulated with the Dream Factory rehearsals recordings and preperations, even Cat's outfit was created and designed for Susannah, the backdrop and stage etc not to mention Dr Fink Eric Leeds & Atlanta Bliss who were a part of the Dream Factory sessions are still in the band, Brown Mark would have been there too if he didn't decide to leave..
How can they be divorced from say Strange Relationships, that was being expressed during the Billy's Sunglasses rehearsal(1984) and the Miami Soundcheck PR tour 1985 at the Le New Morning 1986 show and the Dream Factory cut 1986
The same can be heard/seen/said for many other songs like Bedtime Stories, Feline, Noon Rendezvous, Chocolate, Desire, Mutiny, High Fashion, the Dance Electric, Holly Rock,

.

the Creative process is never singular.

.

Again, if you and I went into the studio and worked out a few songs, talked about it, tried stuff, jammed it, and then I went into the studio again and took everthing that happened and recorded the song by myself. Were you not a part of the creative process?

.

I mean think 4 how long we thought and many people blindly still think that Prince did EVERYTHING on the Time albums... Yet Morris Day played drums on 1/2 the songs and sang lead, Jesse Johnson played guitar and drums on many Ice Cream Castles songs and they wrote Jungle Love. the first Time album Lisa Coleman Dez Dickerson and Dr Fink contributed songs and music.

Yet Prince did EVERYTHING...

.

Even Prince said in a 1990 interview(after all of those people were gone) that by Controversy he had more band members on the songs and music. Even though it was technically Dirty Mind.

Yep, and I noted that Lisa, Wendy, & Susannah are credited on the album in other areas. People just need a reason to troll sometimes I think.

This description makes it sound like Prince stole their jam session material and claimed it as his own. Was he calling the shots during those sessions or just being a bandleader?

Everyone talked about that, from Andre Cymone Dez the Time members and NPG members

Jamie Starr is a theif lol

But that wasn't actually my intent or direction in what I typed. All those hours of rehearsing and jamming, were recorded/taped.

I forget who talked about some recordings of Dirty Mind and how Prince had various members rehearsing/jamming/creating inthe studio and then the next morning after everyone goes home, he presents the next album/song etc

I thought you guys were speaking of a more substantial role in SOTT. Songs on SOTT that they wrote or composed the music for. As I've stated, in all the books I've read, which is pretty much where we all get our info from, I learned that Prince went out of his way to remove their input from SOTT. I know about the backing vocals and some songs they played instruments on. I also know the story of Starfish and Coffee. I agree with your anology on the jam sessions and the creative process, albeit not to the extent that some would imply.

People that don't realize Dr Fink is on synth/keyboards on Dirty Mind & Head

It's pretty clear from the rehearsals that are circulating that Prince called the shots during rehearsals. Prince tells the band what to do and the band complies to the best of their ability. Prince is basically using the band as a human sequencer, trying out a number of his own ideas.

This is so disrepectful. I'm in the mddle of reading Mayte's book right now, and she keeps mentioning how Prince would talk about Wendy and Lisa like family, and how much he revered them and was impressed by them, and how they would turn simple ideas of his into full blown songs.

If you ask me, Wendy and Lisa have been pretty humble about their contributions to Prince's music. If Wendy says they contributed to SOTT, you should shut the fuck up and believe her, caus she knows damn well better than you about it.

[Edited 4/10/17 6:25am]

the Vault only has information as it comes forth.

Jill Jones was also backing vocals on the Glamorous Life, Chocolate and a few other songs, that the Vault did not have her listed. And until Jesse Johnson and Morris Day talked about it, they did not have them down on songs either.

There's nothing substantial in the claims on behalf of W&L. It all comes down to vague suggestions that they influenced Prince more or less just by being around at the time.

Yep, and I noted that Lisa, Wendy, & Susannah are credited on the album in other areas. People just need a reason to troll sometimes I think.

No, some people are terrified of learning that Prince really wasn't the singular genius the world thinks he is. If Wendy and Lisa really wrote "Strange Relationship" and "Raspberry Beret" and "Mountains", then where does that leave Prince? What DID he do, if at all??? The answer to that question scares the hell out of some people. If Prince really wasn't the genius, but Wendy and Lisa were, then what are we all doing here??

You're protesting too much. No one ever said that W&L wrote those songs. But they worked on them. We know that by the earlier version of SR, and ICNTTPOYM. And apparently they worked on them to a point that Prince gave them credit. They could have been minimal songs at that point, until W&L added production to it. That was enough for Prince. However, they're not listed as cowriters, but to say The Revolution isn't on SOTT is ridiculous.

Even Jesse Johnson has said when the band was jamming, and someone came up with a hook, he knew when to give credit when someone really came up with something, opposed to when someone is just really having a moment in those moments. Dr. Fink had the original synth hook for "Dirty Mind", and he gave him credit. Prince gave credit (usually) where it was due. Hell, he was putting papa's name on stuff he probably had nothing to do with, but that was for a different rea$on.

So let's not get hyperbolic about who wrote what. You listed three songs, and Prince recorded thousands? "What DID he do?" Plenty.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

I think AnnaSantana is meaning to show how people who think Prince 'did EVERYTHING' no one did anything but Prince, freak out at the question or fact that other people worke with Prince in various degrees. The whole 1 man band idea, even PRince talked about later in the late 90s as being a big stretch to sell him to WB.

.

There are a lot of fans who believe Prince did everything, who don't realize Morris Day plays drums on many songs, that Dez actually wrote a few songs for the Time & Vanity that Dr Fink is the keyboardist & soloist on Head and keyboardist on Dirty Mind etc etc. People who just this year have said Prince did everything on Purple Rain which is like WOW where are U living?

People need to listen to Jerome on the current DrFunkPodcast... A lot of things that people give 100% to Prince came from the individuals, the dancing the 'somebody bring me a mirror'
On Mutiny where Prince/St Paul sing 'You took, did U give' that was a part of a 'church offering speach Morris would do at the beginning of the Time shows

.

I had people actually foam at the cybermouth at me when I mentioned that Susannah Melvoin was background vocals on Rock Hard In a Funky Place, Play In the Sunshine, the Ballad of Dorothy Parker etc
