I have seen interviews with Madonna in which she stated I wrote this song or that and didn't really go into the details. But not being a huge Madonna fan, perhaps you are right.

As for Prince and the band. What constitutes 'songs written by Prince"? Just because the band worked on the song and fleshed it out, it doesn't mean Prince didn't write it or deserve writing credits. Writing is not the same thing as arranging or accompanying. Must Prince play every instrument by himself for it to be considered written by him? It almost feels like the only songs he gets credit for writing (without some kind of ambiguity or contention by a fan or Revolution member) on Purple Rain are Darling Nikki, BEautiful Ones and When Doves Cry (and those were mostly by himself in the studio.) Its all Prince and the Revolution credits on the album (even WDC, DN, and BO) so I am not talking about there. I imagine that when Mick Jagger writes a song, KEith and the boys still add additional musical color to it. They still say its written by Mick though without having to throw credit at every band's member's contribution (at least in the linear notes on my Sticky Fingers album). For Prince--a lot of pressure to live up to the first two albums reputation for being totally Prince. Now everything that is not totally played by Prince in a studio is challengable where writing credits are concerned. (Did he write it at all if he didn't do it totally alone in a studio?)

Your list of Prince vs Revolutions contributions on the those albums, do they prove or contradict my statement about Prince doing 60% -75% of the creation but having 100% of the vision??? The songs say Prince and the Revolution--is that not enough credit for them having played on the album? Can't the writing credits still go to him without people assuming W and L wrote Purple Rain?

that is a huge exaggeration. Madonna is HUGE on talking about who co-wrote, who produced, who played on who wrote who inspired. So that is far from the truth. And people in the band ESPECIALLY the Revolution have always talked about what was ALL Prince and what the full band or particualar musicians worked on.

Certainly a majority of it. But it gets a little blurry when one is talking about jam sessions etc. The funny thing is Madonna gets full credit (not in the linear notes but in the popular media) for songs she merely wrote the lyrics for. Adele never writes songs all by herself... Sometimes, I think Prince should have alternated back and forth between totally solo, musically stripped down Prince and Prince with a band. Other musicians have done it that way to great succes. The Truth, One Nite Alone and his earlier albums are sadly underappreciated and unknown.

With the released music, maybe Prince goes up to 75 or 80 percent, but the ideas were probably flowing during the Dream Factory sessions, one thing leads to another. no man is an island. Except for Prince about half the time...(to his personal detriment).

Most people believe 'Prince Did Everything' and this stems from the 1977 push to present Prince as a 'Kid Wonder' or Stevie Wonder type etc

Many people think Purple Rain was ALL Prince

You still seem to be accusing me of having a certain opinion based on what? Maybe I was tired and done with the discussion? Maybe I just didn't feel the need to address one way or another?

How do I think you should have taken that line (That Someone Else Typed That You Ascribed To Me?) How is it I'm being left with the bag of explaination when I did not say it? Do you see how your confusion caused further confusion and probably -most likely skewerd your opinion in responding/understand me? You should just say 'Ooops I was Wrong' and not continue to try to push your point. Not say BUT (which tends to excuse the apology.

The average person maybe, but the second they learn he has collaborators, they jump from A-Z. someone on this very site the day before his death stated in a thread about songs Prince did not write by himself stated Prince would not have a career without the collaborators he basically stole from.

[Edited 5/22/17 0:28am]

The interview was discussed at lenght on alt.music.prince at the time and even Prince commented on it on the Love4Another site. You at as if I made it up. Here is the quote again: Wendy: Prince always wanted money and control, period. Lisa and I wrote "Purple Rain." We came to rehearsal with the melody and the idea, and then over the next two days everyone worked on it and fleshed it out. But for "Computer Blue," we just contributed a keyboard line. That's writing? You just never knew what [credit] he would give you. He just wanted absolute power in every way, and we were too much for him. That's why he fired us."

Even without u posting the link Mr Facts. She still isn't saying she wrote it. Just reading what you posted she isn't saying she wrote it.

come on. if this quote is correct, then she just said Lisa and I wrote the basic melody of Purple Rain and then the band worked on It. That almost completely eliminates Prince from the creative process. I sure hope that quote is wrong or at least she took it back.

The picture of Prince in front of the photo of Bobby Z and Wendy after Bobby's heart attack and you reply with 'looks like he is pushing Wendy away eek ' is an example of an issue beyond 'wanting to be factual' as well as your continued push of the lie of of 'Wendy said she wrote Purple Rain'

That was a joke and you know it (because I told you). I was making a bit of fun of your tendency to post irrelevant pictures to prove this or that.

Can U even post the link post # where U said it was a joke and 'told me' it was?

IF, and U and Paul seem to be having a problem posting links of things

The basic melody is not the song, it is the basic melody.
And if U and paul(even though he has been around long enough and told by many members where to find it) listen- to what she said and why then you will understand she was making fun of of the idea that she/lisa wrote it. This very thing is found on the PR movie commentary dvd

paulludvig talks about facts but seems to go a lot by hearsay especially if it promotes what he wants to believe... this and the Irresistable Bitch thing

Yesterday I rewatched part of Purple Rain. The cassette that was played again and again in it has music that is already further developed than what is being referenced in that one short quote. And all that was about was saying "we got writing credit for a keyboard line in Computer Blue, but not for a chord structure in Purple Rain, which just seems wrong".

.

So that statement is apparently enough for people to hate W&L for more than 20 years now. And that statement fits in well with so many other stories about Prince taking a basic idea and then expanding on it and having a full song recorded the next day/a few days later. In some cases the person with the start of the song felt slighted by what happened, in some cases not. But it was part of the creative universe that Prince had created around himself. Lots of talented people focused on making music and a PR machine around it that has a definite interest in pushing the "Prince did everything all by himself" and Prince with a definite interest in getting paid (he was not a very good employer for the most part, from what I understand from those that worked for him (through books and interviews), although it seems to be the norm in creative professions, as money is often not the primary driver for the creative types)

.

So just what is the big deal about it? They added enough to the song that they felt it would have been logical to share writing credit. Prince disagrees.

.

It's not like it's a good song or anything... it was always the song to have a short break and get some drinks during concerts. (much like Maggot Brain during P-Funk shows)

No she did not, this is from the PR disc commentary that you seem to want to avoid.
She was making fun of the concept.

And U still never posted in FACTUAL proof that helped U. Because of your lack of information and careless desire to actually get FACTs, I helped U. And other members have pointed the same out to you and u still in your need to be on point and factual decided not to take the advice of other org members.

Paul, I think it's safe to say by now that your version of events is a flat out lie and you are just trolling. I'll stop responding to you now. Please take the extra time to learn to read and properly understand texts and if you have trouble understanding the meaning of what is being said, take the quote and ask for explanations. I wish you well.

Where have I lied?

Where are those quotes where Wendy is saying that Prince is simply a member of the Revolution? Oh, and we're still waiting on the source where claim somebody else said they wrote Purple Rain.

Not really. But nevermind. You and Guybros asked for proof that Wendy once said in an interview that she wrote Purple Rain. There it is.

what did Prince contribute to Purple Rain other than lyrics and a guitar solo? I am kind of confused about what people on this thread think about his contribution relatively speaking,
