I just finished writing an IEP, so my spring break has officially started [insert happy dancing jig here]! I'm sleep deprived and don't have the energy to do a timeline right now, so I will post the timelines for chapter 3 and 4 tomorrow.

Chapter 3

“I’ve seen the future, and it will be…”

She is mesmerized by his performance! She remembers every last detail.

.

I’m beginning think the parents wanted her to star in some of his music videos to become a dancing star (in movies and music videos dancing) and never dreamed of how the turn of events would play out, change, and shape their lives. IDK, what do you all think?

Once you see P perform live your life changes forever.

cool

I'm so sad bawl bawl that I never got 2 see Prince perform live in person. I did watch him perform live on TV when he performed at the Super Bowl and I will be going 2 see the Revolution later this month.

Yes, about mama and the tape...

Kirk took the demo dancing tape from Matey’s mom and gave it to P. I wonder, if Kirk ever wonders or tries to imaging what the trajectory of Prince’s life would have been like had he not accepted that tape. Kirk was the best man at their wedding. Was Kirk P’s bff back then? Was Kirk credited (for lack of a better word) for getting them together, as he did accept the tape? Someday Kirk will talk.

I know that isn't 100% book related as I'm wondering and speculating, but Kirk did take the tape. He could have said no.

Penny, I'll delete if you think I went off topic.

Chapter Three

I don't think I'm the only one who enjoyed living vicariously through Mayte being told he wanted to meet her after viewing the tape, calling her, having her over etc.

This chapter was a lot of fun to read!

I've read through chapter 5 so far. I've laughed out loud and gotten choked up as well.

No one's asked yet, but I would name Chapter 3 ' Doorway to Destiny' crysball

One of my favorite parts in Chapter 1 was when Mayte was talking about Prince's America video shoot interview. I too found that interview to be beautiful and intriguing. It really shows a deep and beautiful side to Prince. I have watcehd that interview a good amount of times and I always have my eyes glued to the screen. One of my favorite of his interviews. Such a magnificant soul. heart heart heart heart

LBrent,

I totally get what U are saying about She Loves Me 4 Me. But What's wrong with She Spoke to Me? That song is from 1996. Am I missing something about She Spoke to Me?

..

U know what made me mad at him and want 2 slap him was seeing that note he wrote 2 Mayte in 1994-1995 when he writes "eye will never leave u" over and over again. (I still haven't gotten 2 chapter 6 yet, where that note is, but I was flipping through the pages of the book and came across that note, and it caught my eye eye because of all the eye eye in it.) At first, I was like, wow, this note is so loving...and it really is. But then I think about what happened 2 them and, I mean seriously Prince, how can u write that kind of a note 2 a woman and then 4 years later u are asking for an "annulment"? I realize that 4 years is kind of a long time, and they dealt with losing a child, and all of that. But the way he wrote that note, he sounded so firm in his conviction that he would love Mayte forever. Except 4 his love of music and guitars, he was very fickle about many things, including the women he loved.

It's not so hard to imagine why she couldn't let go all those yesrs, right? I've found it hard to fathom myself as I remember them together and how much they adored one another. Was it all an act on his part? I'd like to think not. He was such a fool to give up a love like that. Some people never even experience anything like that in their lifetime. But I don't like having those thoughts and feelings towards him so before I let myself get too negative and down about it I remind myself that if she could still love him surely I could as well (not in the same way of course). He was broken at least to some degree from the circumstances and events of his childhood of that I have no doubt. Those scars never go away. It affected his relationships that's for sure so I do have to cut him some slack for that too.
sigh He was complicated and that's an understatement. But i do still have mad respect and admiration for the man. And for her now as well.

Oh, make no mistake, I adore P...I'm just not happy with him right now...just like anyone else you care about...His being such a guy lost him his marraige.

And make no mistake, I'm not a "fan" of Mayte's but I do like her...but there towards the end she definitely could've handled things differently, but I think she was following her parents as marraige role models.

Where the hell is my time machine???

Just finished the audio version (which, if purchased via Audible at least, comes with a PDF of all the photos).

I'd definitely recommend the audio over the print version. Having the author read their own story adds a whole extra dimension. And it's an incredibly moving experience when she can barely talk through the tears.

As for the book itself... it's obvious early on that she was never an equal partner at any point in the relationship and whole elements of Prince were never revealed to her. But taken as *her* story, it's a fantastic listen. And there are plenty of interesting anecdotes along the way to make it a must for a Prince fan. The opening where she compares herself to the 'woman who sits all alone by the pier' in Paisley Park is really quite something.

Although I think some of her wacky ideas around reincarnation etc probably helped win her a husband, I give her full marks for standing her ground over all the Larry Graham / JW mumbo jumbo even if it lead to her marching orders.

They had a major onstage fight in Glasgow 1995 which I wish she had addressed. But its as good a read as could reasonably be expected.

For anyone interested, the book has many parallels with Carrie Fisher's The Princess Diarist released about six months earlier. Not only do both books involve royalty we lost in 2016, but both have 19 year old girls screwing cultural icons 15 years their senior who are essentially unknowable to them.

I also rewatched the video for the Greatest Romance again last night, so I'm kinda with you on that vibe as well, and I hate feeling like that too. I guess we never really knew the timeline exactly before...the thought of her being in Spain waiting for him and then having to see that. And I'd never really clocked it before, but there's this whole thing at the end with him putting his hand on the woman's belly, and then it growing. GAH.

Not like I love my guitar....

Me too re: her writing about the Paisley Park song.

As far as religion/spirituality/reincarnation, a lot of mainstream religious ideas can seem wacky to folks who didn't grow up with them. At the same time, converts to forms of religion/spirituality sure can be passionate.

Couldn't agree more about her standing her ground at the idea that her child's suffering was some punishment from on high. Horrid idea. Could say a lot more, but maybe I should take it to the politics and religion forum.

Thanks for the experiences people shared re: the audio version. I'm going to listen to it.

So relate to much in all of this. I'd like to say that the disturbing parts of P keep me from melting when I watch him perform, but ohhhh would I be lying.

I don't want to be judgemental. I don't look at myself as a better person than others. I'm very disturbed by some things I've done over the years. Wish I could go back and change them (thanks, LBrent, for the time machine idea : ) ).

Looking from the outside as a fan/fam, some of his treatment of women (rock star or no -- there's big boy pants just like there's big girl pants) and lack of reasonable pay at times for those working for him (whether he was fully aware of the situation or not), are two very disturbing parts of what went on.

It really stings precisely because he was so very sincere, and often very successful, in lifting women up in a man's world and lifting up artists, and so many other people, financially disenfranchised and ripped off by the suits of the world.

[Edited 4/6/17 7:15am]

Yeah, I wish the total dodginess of it which my brain understands was sufficient defense but nah...when he drapes his arms over the mike and closes his eyes and starts making those little whispery moany sounds in the back of his throat...I'm just gone. It's kind of exasperating, but at the same time, I really don't want to be unmoved by it. At all. Anyway. OFF TOPIC. Ahem. Sorry wink

And your last point, yeah, I think a lot of us struggle with it...I think he did. I think he geuinely and sincerely loved women, and at the same time, he used them as narcissitic supply, and consequently treated them abominably sometimes. confused

Me neither, and I'm not giving up one of life's great joys without a fight. ; )

Seriously, I'm plenty naive, but I think a lot of P music and performances are inspired by the true, good, beautiful part of his genius. Stuff like the above, as well as the more, er, cerebral.

In fact, some of the beauty and truth really shone through when he mixed all that together--the cerebral, visceral, spiritual.

I agree with LBrent and others when it comes to particulars of the story, several songs, and their lyrics. Gifts not always serving good, that's for sure. Grateful for the mountain of good P's mountain of music and performances did do over the years, but oh...I really feel for Mayte.

I preordered the book from Amazon. Just was shipped today and won't be here till Monday. So after reading this thread I couldn't stand it and downloaded it in iBooks. I didn't get the audio because I don't know if I could take the sadness in her voice. Just now read the acknowledgement section and already tears. Lol. Mayte was never my fav. Just because I'm older and enjoy the 80s ladies. But my heart may not be able to take this. I'm feeling nervous and haven't even started. Prince was such a special person. Just wish he could have gotten his act together when it came to a lasting love. Here goes. Probably won't stop till I'm done!! 👀

Some stuff enjoyed in chapter 2:

Mayte's larger perspective at a young age, e.g. Egypt and other places have their own Paula Abdul's and pre-Purple Rain Princes.

Description of Dad as wingman for her performances and how Mom was all about "the reveal," just as Prince was.

Mayte doesn't see belly dancing as something that stole her childhood. She sees it as having taught her that she is precious, and she thinks it's essential for her daughter to find that truth. Love how she describes the beauty in her first romance as a side effect of all that.

Her respect for the wardrobe staff at Paisley Park, and for the costume making genius of Madame Alba, who took measurements in her head and perfected every detail, including laying out the costumes in the best way for left-handed Mayte.

Her memories of the mean girls and other "varieties" of kids, and her note that they're everywhere in every culture. Describing how she spent so much time off studying ballet...how she wasn't hanging around with the "in crowd," instead describing herself as the one who would get smacked in the face in dodgeball.

I love that Mayte says she has a "thing for guys with green eyes" (P & Luis Miguel) cuz I always see P's eyes as dark green, too. I know, I know...they're hazel (green/brown), but still. Lol

I was skeptical other gals had mentioned P initiating the whole "talking for hours on the phone" thing. But now I see that was his modus operandi.
