2009 interview w/ Tyka discussing her health/life struggles and she & P's childhood

I had never heard this interview. I found it very candid and interesting.

I hope it's not a repost.

I never heard this one but she did do a print interview that I read and when I went to get the book it was gone but see the write up below. Maybe she will reprint it after the estate is settled. It just seems like the had a tough childhood.

Tyka Nelson is an extraordinarily, anointed, talent, and is also the only full sister of Rock Legend Prince.

She has just written a New Book called Mama Never Taught Me How To Sing! Mama Never Taught Me How To Sing, is an inspirational Christian autobiography about growing up, in Minneapolis Minnesota, her journey as an over-weight, light skinned African American female , and the discoveries she makes along the way. Tyka's New Book, begins by chronicling my life from an early age, until adulthood. Through words and some never before seen pictures of herself and family. Stories of murder, suicide, rape, prostitution, child, alcohol and drug abuse are told, in a creative style that are all her own.

Although, all of the stories are true, it is the truth from her own perspective. Most of the names have been changed, because it was not her intent to hurt, embarrass, or cause harm to anyone. However in one to one discussions Tyka has been very open about her relationship with her famous sibling and her incredible life.

Tyka grew up surrounded by music. The Minneapolis based artist is the daughter of Jazz singer Mattie Shaw, and accomplished musician John L. Nelson. Growing up Tyka listened to Mahalia Jackson records and began singing at the age of 2. She wrote her first song, at the ripe, old age of 10. Tyka plays 4 different instruments, piano, guitar, bass and clarinet but admits; "I don't consider myself a musician, I play, just well enough to put down my own musical ideas.

People are saying; "Tyka's Story is a missing link of Love in American history..."..."You tell of generational curses of so many things.Write on, write on!" "Ordered your book Weds-Got it yesterday-Finished it this morning-WOW-WOW-WOW U R Indeed something special!!!" While another reader wrote..."Well, I got the book on Saturday, opened it yesterday and finished it in about 6 hours.

Just listened to the interview. I found it very inspiring. Nice to hear that she has found self confidence and self love. We need more uplifting and positive stories to be shared. Thanks for posting!

Yeah, I learned a lot of stuff in recent years that I'd really rather not know... confused About my own family, that is.

Same here. I don't need to know all Prince's secrets any more than I need to know my relatives. razz Prince was an imperfect human being like everyone else and that's all I really need to know.

I think his family was more imperfect then he was.

It's always been obvious to me that he was broken. That's usually due to trauma during the tender years. Its heartbreaking. Sadly, dysfunctional families are nothing new, and sometimes its not even intentional. Mine is living proof of that. Life ain't always, if ever, easy. He and others like him probably believe they can "fix" themselves, or simply rise above it. In some ways he did, in others he did not.

Amen to all this.

P was very flawed and I think that's what I find so incredibly fascinating.

There will never be another like him, that's for sure.

Can you elaborate (i.e. broken how; what traits/evidence/behavior do you equate with him being broken) just curious
