pretty good openess.

She explained a lot of what was happening and why they did not do a lot of early tributes.

Interesting comment about The Revolution being Prince's last band. I can understand why they might feel that way. I wonder if Prince would agree.

'the last band that he was in' I sorta agree with that. Even though the SOTT band was an offshoot of the Revolution period, (I knew at that time that they would not last long as well for many reasons) the following bands were 'post Purple rain' superstardom bands vs the previous being mostly the opposite, the band dynamic / interaction, the formulation of the scene/foundational period, put Prince right in it in a way I don't think he would or could ever again.

Great interview and thanks for sharing! While certainly not an easy task, I applaud them for keeping P's music and spirit alive. cool

Very good interview. I appreciate her clarifications.

Disagree about the only band part...to some extent anyhow. I was recently thinking about the Undertaker album he did with M Bland and S thompson. That felt like a band effort to me. Plus, did not some the 3rdeyegirl stuff actually come from the women themselves. Plus, there are song titles that P got from NPG players.

I do think he bonded more with the Revolution and they probably brought out some of his best work (Plus, this was a time when he wasn't being tempted by hip hop or those telling him he wasn't 'black' enough--whatever that means...is funk /rock/r and b/soul/jazz not 'black' enough?...guh. i like hip hop but i am friggin' tired of his power over everything.

Nice interview, although I still think the timing of "We're going on tour" stung with me because my feelings were raw at the time, and I'm sorry Wendy, that little dig at the NPG was not necessary, and I hope any member of the NPG would address that one day.

Other than that, the interview was cool.

"We're also going to do some of the songs that didn't call for a lot of his calisthenics or his screaming. There's no one who could do that. No one." - Awesome.

Saying The Revolution was the last band he was in could be considered a dig at at the NPG. confused

Yup. I highly doubt Prince would agree, but hey, I would like all or most members of the NPG, not just one or two, express how they feel about Wendy's statement. If they themselves agree with her then fine.

I guess it depends on how it is meant. I think it is from what I posted. She also complimented them in her last post.

We're not the most thrash-y musicians he had. After we broke up, he had guys that were, like, notating their parts.

I just think that there was some kind of symbiotic difference in the earlier band chemistry pre superstardom vs post superstardom

Who's going to be singing?
Well, that's the thing. Everybody keeps saying, "Well, why are you doing it? Who's going to sing? Who's going to be Prince? Who's going to be the centerpiece?" All right, let's break this down: No one. No one's going to be Prince. No one will ever be Prince, and none of us in the band are going to try and be him. You can't. It's just not going to happen.

this still happens to me, I have a buddy who lives across the country who I've been talking to more regularly and we go deep on Prince and then we both hit that wall and kinda go quiet

But when I reminisce or become nostalgic or sentimental, that brick wall of absolutism hits me smack in the face, and it's an incredibly painful feeling. When you think about the fact that someone is never going to be on your doorstep again, it's ridiculous.

From the article:

As much as they THINK they are the last band Prince was ever in, they weren't.

Sounds like they are just trying to make themselves feel important....

In your mind, how different were the Revolution from his later bands?
We're not the most thrash-y musicians he had. After we broke up, he had guys that were, like, notating their parts. We're just not that. We're scrappy. We were a band. Bobby says it all the time: "We were the last band Prince was ever in."

Do you feel like you've come to terms with his death and the circumstances?
No. No. I have a deep empathy and compassion for the pain he was in, yes. And do I understand how something tragic like that could happen? Yes. I lost my brother to something similar. [Jonathan Melvoin, then in Smashing Pumpkins, died of a heroin overdose in 1996.] And I have many friends that have had serious problems with physical pain and, oops, something happens, right? So that part I understand.

But when I reminisce or become nostalgic or sentimental, that brick wall of absolutism hits me smack in the face, and it's an incredibly painful feeling. When you think about the fact that someone is never going to be on your doorstep again, it's ridiculous.

Sounded like she said nice stuff about the other bands as far as being "shredders", the other part seemed like she meant that Prince was a member of a band that was coming up and they all became stars together. The NPG and the other bands came into the gig playing for an established superstar. Seems simple to me.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

that is what I read too

I doubt she would say something like people are trying to insinuate

She's performed with NPG members via COed

Barbarella: We would hear that during the Purple Rain period, it was such a family atmosphere with the band and the crew. More forgiving. I think it changed as it went. On the Nude Tour, I heard that the guitar player, who just so funky and so great, would stand up to Prince and they would get in arguments regularly and almost come to blows. After that, there weren't people around him like that. I'm not so sure there were sounding boards. If you disagree with something, he'll humiliate you to save his own face really. One on one was a very different story. But when he had his boys around him, he could gang up on you. So much insecurity, I think.

So what? How long ago was that? Does that speak for every band members experience up until 2016?
