it's easy to be cruel on the internet. These people would never say this stuff to her face.

There is nothing I would say behind someones back that I wouldn't say to their face.
Besides, most of the responses here are not trashing Shelby as a person. By all accounts, she's very nice. I just don't like what she brought to the table during Prince gigs. I found her yelling to be out of place, annoying and unnecessary. When she sings properly she has a great voice. But I didn't (and wouldn't) pay to see her. I paid for a Prince gig so I'd rather Prince sing and for her not to obnoxiously shout during it. I have no problem with her personally though.

Of course I would. Why wouldn't I? I've said a lot worse to people more famous than her. Besides, none of my comments are directed at her personality nor am I saying anything negative about her as a person. I just don't think she's a very good performer. That’s my opinion. A lot of other Prince fans share that opinion. I'm sure she's aware of that. Not liking someone's act doesn't make me a "hater" or whatever. I just don't like it. I don't think my or other Prince fans opinion of her bothers her THAT much anyway. She got to perform with Prince. That's an achievement in itself. So I don't think she'd do anything to me if I told her to her face I didn't like her involvement in Prince's concerts because my opinion wouldn't count for much. So why would I not tell her what I thought of her to her face? What possible repercussions would there be?

Well, maybe none for you, but certainly for her, especially in the words with which you chose to express your sentiments. What a self-centered way of to approach life and those we share it with. And this is coming from someone who also speaks her mind. But I like to have some semblance of of decency, compassion, and decorum.

More to the point, why on earth would you? confuse Surely how famous or not Shelby (may or may not be) is completely irrelevant. Her level of fame doesn't in any way reflect her value either as a woman or as a singer imho.
I can understand why someone might bother a beloved singer/musician either to give some encouragement, or express some gratitude, but I can see no point in telling one you can't stand that you can't relate to or don't appreciate their work?
If Georgie Fame sat down next to me at the bar, I might gush some enthusiasm and offer to buy him a drink, but if Robbie Williams angel then joined the party, I'd hardly be likely to start giving him a hard time about how insufferably smug and annoying I find him, even though I suspect after a few long minutes listening to him spout I may well feel like pouring a drink over his head. wink I doubt I would say boo (hiss) to him.

I wouldn't go out of my way to say it to her. Its not like I'm saying I'd seek her out to tell her what I think of her. The original question this thread posed was asking why people don't like Shelby. I gave my reasons why I don't like her. That’s all. Then it was put to me that I wouldn't be willing to say it to her face and I responded by giving reasons why I would. There would be no negative repercussions for me. Shelby might not like it or more likely, she wouldn't care. But if I met her on the streets I wouldn't go up to her and tell her I think she's no good. I've heard she's a nice person. Why would I go out of my way to make her feel bad? However, if she asked me what I think of her parts in Prince concerts, I'd tell her I didn't like it. I'd tell her why I didn't like it. If she asked, I'd assume she'd want an honest answer. But again, I wouldn't go out of my way to make her feel bad.

See my response above.

I'll reiterate, I'm not saying I dislike Shelby, I just dislike what she did at the Prince concerts I attended.

I like Shelby's voice a lot.I also like her performance she did with Prince on the George Lopez show. But I can see how some would get annoyed at her by constant "clap your hands ,stomp your feet" chants. She's from North Carolina like I am.For some reason I think she's the sole reason why Prince took his "Welcome 2 America " tour to the Carolinas .If true im grateful to her for that [Edited 1/12/17 0:21am] [Edited 1/12/17 0:21am]

I love me some Shelby J! That woman can sing her behind off! I am from South Carolina and I believe "clap your hand and stomp your feet" just comes naturally to us in the Carolinas. I always loved it because it made the audience interact with them. Prince and Shelby sure knew how to get me up on my feet and move something so I never found it annoying. I think you are right she may have been the reason he came to the Carolinas and God bless Shelby J for that!

Any member who would insult another member because said member insulted Prince or a Prince protégé will be banned immediately. Mayte Garcia is a whore.

Any disrespect towards Prince and his collaborators is freedom of speech. Any disrespect towards hating members or moderators is rude and won't be tolerated. Bria Valente is a mentally retarded person.

One last rule has been created in early september 2009, after Prince apparently chose a Youtube user, named Shelbey, to become his "VJ" and regularly post live videos of his:

  • Shelbey and her Youtube channel are the worst thing that ever happened in the whole world since the beginning of human history, much worse than Hitler, Mao and Stalin altogether! That girl is a liar and a crook, the videos she posts are bootlegs and she is the devil, she must be hated every day for at least 15 minutes by every member who should spit on her picture while shouting insults and deathwishes. Any mention of her or the videos she posts is highly prohibited in the forums, and will be punished by being banned immediately.

Legal problems

Legal troubles are an additionnal reason why VJ Shelbey is such a touchy topic on the org: while most users think she is just an impostor who posts bootlegged videos, most moderators believe that she is part of a malicious plot by Prince and his lawyers to close the org. The theory, which makes perfect sense, is that Prince indeed sends videos to Shelbey, hoping that the moderators will believe her and post links to her videos. Prince would then prosecute the org, claiming that he never gave these videos to Shelbey in the first place and that the links constitute copyright infringment. For this, the moderators think they might be deported to the Guantanamo jail in order to serve a lifetime sentence without a trial, so, you know...

Good question because that Shelbey is a completely different person than the one the OP is referring to.

But I guess that's supposed to be funny too.

My personal take on this, Shelby has a good voice. But I prefer Liv's to Shelby's just to compare, and too thought Rosie from back in the day was on the top of the list. It is all personal preferences.

I prefer Liv's voice to Shelby's. I have seen what orgers are saying about Shelby performing with Prince. Still a personal perspective. To each is own. To me she seems sincere and sweet and she seems to have a big, kind heart. And she can sang.

Honestly, Shelby seems like a nice person, but after Rosie Ganies' voice, the rest of the gals who sang with P always sounded a bit offkey to me.

Plus, I'm not fond of that "loud church-y" sounding voice in connection with P's music. It doesn't fit to my ears.

It's nothing personal against the singers that came after RG, but I simply don't enjoy any of them.

You expect it from the people in the crowd. They're excited to see the act they paid to see perform. But you don't expect it from that act's friend who is on stage for some inexplicable reason seemingly doing her best to disprove the notion that Prince puts on one of the best live shows in the business.

Nope. Not a big RnB fan, to be honest. I do dabble but I was raised on 80's hair metal and p funk. I did see Michael Jackson perform live once though. I was very young at the time so I don't remember much about it but, though I may be wrong, I don't remember any of his friends joining him on stage to bellow such nonsense as "put your hands up" and her other phrases. But you're right, I haven't been to many RnB shows. If that kind of thing is a staple of RnB concerts, I doubt I'll be going to any any time soon.

Though, I did talk about Shelby J to a friend of mine who would have more RnB experience than me, and even he didn't enjoy her parts of the Prince concerts he went to. He said it reminded him of church, which is not what you want at a concert.

Don't get me wrong, she comes across as real nice in interviews and I'm sure she's a nice person and all but when I pay over a grand to see Prince in concert, then I expect to see and hear Prince, not his friends. Both Prince shows I attended were great, Prince was great, the band was great, even Shelby didn't annoy me until she seemed to be taking over the show. She played too big a part for what little she did.

You realize that RNB is a hugh part of Prince's music he never ran away from it or dropped how anyone can miss the call and response in RnB and not understand that the roots are from the black church is bizarre. In addition, after watching many performances he did with her she never takes over the stage he was generous with all his bandmates going back to the Revolution and I bet if it was Wendy or Lisa wailing you would not have had a problem. Typical for the org.

[Edited 1/29/17 20:00pm]

I know you're right and that part doesn't bother me cuz, ya know...it's my cuture too and I'm used to it, but I also have a few "aunties" who sing like that and I just can't listen to it for very long. Makes my ears bleed.

Must be the heathen in me. LOL

That's twice you've said "typical of the org" without any explanation of what exactly is typical.

But anyway, yes, if I were alive in the 80's and went to see Prince and The Revolution and halfway through the show Prince gave the microphone to Wendy and Lisa and had them "wail", of course I would have a problem. I paid to hear Prince sing. Nobody else. Why would you assume I wouldn't have an issue with Wendy and Lisa like I do with Shelby J?

Also, of course I can hear RnB in Prince's music. What's your point?

As for the church comment, it was a friend of mine who said that and I'm sure he's quite aware of RnB's roots being in the church, seeing as he's a 32 year old black man who who grew up in New York and was in a gospel choir. But the fact remains, when you go to a concert, you go for the escapism. You don't go to be reminded of church sermons.

--Imagine people actually yelling at a concert😱

You expect it from the people in the crowd. They're excited to see the act they paid to see perform. But you don't expect it from that act's friend who is on stage for some inexplicable reason seemingly doing her best to disprove the notion that Prince puts on one of the best live shows in the business.

confused There's obviously a reason Shelby was on stage as she was an NPG band member. Vocals are instruments too.
