Will the protégés get respect?

I think we could see Prince's original protégé recordings geting a realease, but what about the protégés themselves? And what about the unrelease ones like The Hookers or The Rebles?

Thoughts?

Marketing has to find a way to market them as Prince albums.
Still, they can't come out like puppets.

I think Morris is hilarious, he's a great singer on his own.
Jill is stellar. St. Paul and Susannah too. The first Mavis album is important, 5 incredible songs.
We could do without "Riot In English" (although I find "So Strong" to be a little known pop gem) and "Three O'clock" or "New Question".

I don't think the Ingrid Chavez album stands the test of time that much.
"Children of the Sun" album, I'm partial. Some really good stuff in it.
"Carmen Electra" is something. You either like or hate it, but I think it's a good little complement to D&P.

I would say all side projects up until Dale Bozzio and Sheila's 3rd albums need to be pushed up front.

The Time (all up to Pandemonium)
Vanity 6
Apollonia 6
The Family
Mazarati (3 songs only, but hey I need my Strawberry)
Jill Jones
Madhouse (8 and 16)
Mavis Staples - Time Waits For No One

If we consider "Exodus" to be a side project, and given the almost confidential release,
it really deserves to be known. One you get a sense of the "comic" Prince,
you connect with him so much more. Most of the pubic has a hard time to do so spontaneously.
Prince rebuffs a bit at first sight.

The protégés are an indispensable piece of Prince's Work.
Friends musicians with whom he liked to make music with.
Inspiring personas. Cathartic vectors.
We can't find something as crazy as "Shortberry Strawcake"
or over-the-top like "Blue Limousine" anwhere else, can't we?

The side projects have incredible compositions, production ideas and performances.
I mean "Noon Rendez-Vous", damn!
Talk about minimalism.

I'm not sure the protégés have still something relevant artistically in them,
but I'd be glad to be proven wrong.
By "artistically" I mean dangerous, provocative.
At some point, they've been Prince's unabashed side.

I'm curious about the unreleased side projects.

There we go, third post and we're disagreeing already! I do like the Ingrid Chavez album. And that one didn't have much Prince input. Maybe that's the reason? Has it stood the test of time? No, but none of these albums have. For some reason the Sheila/Vanity/etc albums sound more dated than Prince's own work. These acts may not have been "puppets" (that sounds a little too much like an insult), but they couldn't exist without Prince. (And they didn't, except Sheila.) Seriously, nobody but diehard Prince fans is going to be interested in this. If it took so much trouble to make a Purple Rain remaster, then I don't see an Appolonia 6 remaster any time soon.

If they do get remastered they will be the last on Warner's list.some didn't sell good the first time around I doubt they will want to put much money into them.that was a period of time for most of them.few survived after they were away from Prince and will link to him forever the Hookers were what vanity 6 became and the rebels included Prince

Those specifically? Bonus discs. 'The Time' and Sheila would maybe warrant new releases as they're well known. The other artists on the PP roster don't warrant it as they didn't sell that well in the first place. I see deluxe P boxsets with/without that work included. If you want Jill Jones and Madhouse with the '86/'87 work, in an ideal world, we might get the choice, I doubt it though realistically.

So much potential in releases. I see box set in the future. With the right people on bord, the possibilities are endless.

I think the Apollonia 6 album deserves a fresh remaster. That album is superb ("Blue Limousine" is my favorite).Brenda is really the 'star' of that album. She really shines on songs like "Some Kind Of Lover" and the aforementioned "Blue Limousine".

The whole side A works like a tryptic.
The way the songs segue into one another, albums DO matter.

"Happy Birtdhay Mr. Christian" has production ideas all over, fantastic overdubs.
"Ooh She She Wah Wah" is Blondie meets The Clash.
"Some Kind Of Lover" is summer vacation calypso.

Yeah, the side projects...I wouldn't be as much as a fan without the Purple Universe.
Prince has always been about "Prince and The Band", since the "Grand Central" days.
Friends hanging around. United 4 the Funk.

I would like 2 c Sheena Easton 'A Private Heaven' re-mastered & released on CD as it contains the awesome Sugar Walls. Would also like the Taja Seville album (originally out in 1988 on Paisley Park) 2 b released. That was a fairly good album especially Love is contagious.

The Time, Sheila and Wendy & Lisa have enuff hit songs/single releases to warrant a Best Of CD.

Oh, forgot about Taja!
Right, it was a fun, pretty decent album.
Her take on of "If I Could Get Your Attention" and "Wouldn't You Love To Love Me" are the definitive ones.
"Popular" is good stuff. All the ballads hold up, great performances. Pity it had not a real concept.

I thought P himself chose the 6 for the total number of tits? I know he chose Vanity after she didn't want Vagina. I wouldn't blame her. Lol. The Hookers... Lawd, what in the world was that man thinking...

Why in the world do people KEEP calling Taja Sevelle Taja Seville?! I read that all the time!

.

I find Ingrid's album to have stood the test of time pretty well: it was pretty avant-garde, it's brilliant spoken word poetry and brilliant electronic music. I mean I don't really know what "dated" means anymore anyway, there are very few pop records released between 1960 and 2010 that I couldn't approximatively date by hear I think, so that means all of them sound "dated", and on the other hand now with all those retro acts making music that sounds like [pick a decade], it's almost like dated is the new black.

.

I think releasing unreleased side projects material may involve a little more legal mumbo jumbo than the proper "Prince" stuff, but in time I'm pretty sure some will be released one way or another.

I found Ingrid Chavez' album extremely dull. It's just talking over bad backing tracks. I sold my copy of her CD.

The mere fact that you consider spoken word poetry "talking over music" makes me think of other orgers who consider ambient as being "noise not music". Maybe you do not like or understand spoken word poetry. As a spoken word artist myself I find this a little offensive confused

As for the music, again the mere fact that you consider it "backing tracks" suggests that maybe you do not like or understand electronic music.

Now it's OK if u don't like it, it was an experimental project and, as such, not meant for everyone. But try and be open minded about it wink

I like some poetry, but only when it is in written form and not pretencious. I still stand by what I said.

Different strokes 4 different folks. Ingrid seems a nice person.
