Has anyone read Dez Dickerson's book?

Hi all! I Just wanted to get your thoughts on this book if you've read it, (hoping Dez had a few good things to say about Prince regardless of their differences) and I also wanted to relay my good fortune! I ordered 'My Time with Prince' and I paid $43 for it. When I received it, to my surprise it was a brand new signed copy! And with it came a CD of the Piano and Microphone show of Prince's last performance!!!! I wanted a physical copy of this CD soooo badly. It was on top of my must have list, so you can just imagine my surprise that this seller sent it to me for free without even knowing that this was something I desperately wanted! I went back to Amazon to write a good feedback and was amazed that the book was no longer $43, but now cost $500 By other sellers. It seems I have gotten the last affordable copy with all it's treasures! You don't understand, I never get lucky like this, lol. I am so happy right now! nutty

I'm wondering if maybe Dez was the seller? eek

I read the book years ago and it is well worth the read. It gives a very good inside and real look at how things worked inside of the Purple Empire during the 1st 5 years. There is nothing really derogatory about Prince or anyone really.

.

So according to what you've said, I can make a killing on selling my copy?!!! Not sure if I want to part with it though. wink

I don't think that was luck. I think Prince did that for you because he loves you for loving him.

I don't mean to brag or anything but I downloaded his last piano and microphone show and burned it to a CD and it only cost me 2.99 for a pack of 6 blank discs. razz

But seriously though, have you read the book yet? Any good?

lol Lol, that would have been an option for me if I knew what the heck I was doing with that sort of thing. Not very tech savvy, but the thought did cross my mind. Not to mention I was having trouble finding it online. I was hoping to hit up my 15 year old son on the matter, but was happy I didn't need to do that. Don't forget too that I'm ecstatic at the fact that this book was a signed copy and brand new to boot! All those books at Amazon for $500 are all used. I didn't read the book yet. I just received it yesterday and I'm actually in the process of reading 'Prince: A Pop life' by Dave Hill at the moment, so I need to finish that one first.

The book being signed is a bit of a coup, especially at that price, considering its going for 500 quid now. You could make a decent profit on that. Then again, the sentimental value might be more than the financial value.

I ordered mine straight from Dez himself, a week ago this past friday and received it in my mailbox 4 days later. Please do not use Amazon to buy his book. I had emailed him directly to ask about buying the book and his albums...this is the exact response I got back...We have a site (which is currently offline) where fans can buy both. Until it's back live, you can order the book directly and pay via Paypal-it sells for $29.95 plus $5.00 S&H. Our Paypal email for the company (Absolute Records) is absoluteguys@aol.com-just provide us with address info.

Wow! That's great that he's selling it directly. If I had known I would have bought it directly from him. (but then I wouldn't have received my special gift biggrin) My seller was pretty honest as well, as he was selling the book for not much more than the 29.95, while others are selling it for so much more now. I hope other fans that are interested in this book will take a look at this thread so they don't get ripped off buying this book for $500. eek

Btw- My copy has the same statement and handwriting as yours so I'm pretty sure it was personally signed by him. Thanks for the heads up.

I agree. I would hate for a fan to get ripped off by a seller. I did message Dez and his people to let them know that people are selling his book on Amazon at outlandish prices back when I ordered mine from him incase he and his staff were not aware. I have not heard anything back but I would highly enourage folks to order from him. It is awesome that you got your special gift. Thankfully you were not taken advantage of.

Have any of you bought his albums? I have his One Man album. I am waiting to see if he has any more copies of A Retrospective which is is 2 CD disc set album that he put out in like 2006 I believe. That is an amazing album from start to finish and at the time of it's release, Dez only put out 250 copies to be sold. I ran across that album on a fan's mix cloud page a few weeks back and omg I spent DAYS with A Retrospective on repeat in my head, home PC, and work PC. I want that album so so bad!

I haven't bought his album. I'll have to check it out. Dez and Dr Fink has always been my favorite band members...

It's a great read. The only thing that has stuck in my mind, however, is that he never saw Prince nervous apart from just once, when at the Purple Rain premiere he couldn't get out of the car and asked the limo driver to go round the block one more time. Even Prince was slightly phased at the crowds I guess!

It's neat how the inscription is a clever — and more mature — counterpoint to his famous line out of 1999.

lol razz yep! he seems to have grown and matured too. I imagine between him, Prince, Morris, and Andre that the ladies just never stood a chance when those 4 were in a room! lol

You wouldn't know of any links to recordings or videos of Dez's son Jordan Dickerson's band — Bitter Pills? Would you?

No I sure haven't but I will see what I can find about his band. I know Jordan just recently took a job for the uber corporation, not as a driver but for the actual company.

I ordered both the Retrospective CD and Dez's book several years ago when Dez still had a web page for ordering them. But it took multiple desperate e-mails over many months before I ever received anything. I was surprised and pleased to eventually get a message from Dez himself. Unfortunately, the Retrospective CD is out of print and out of stock--he talked about making more of them but I've seen no evidence of that happening yet. I was supposed to get a refund for the CD when I finally received my copies of the book (one was a gift for a friend), but I only got the books. I'd had enough of the runaround, so I let it drop. I'm not dissing Dez, but I obviously wish that his order fulfillment was handled better. (Though if you got your book in four days, I guess it *has* gotten better. My experience was much more frustrating.)

Yeah I had read past thread posts about how folks had in the past had trouble getting the book in a timely manner. I have to admit I was worried. I'm glad to know that it is out of print and out of stock. I am not trying to be negative either but I agree it would be nice if one of his staff members could be more responding to fans questions. Guess I can add the A Retrospective album to my "maybe someday wishlist" and hope he will release it again someday...
