I guess she was in studio with the local Minneapolis class rock station KQRS this morning. I'll have to download the podcast later and listen to it.

Sounds good! I couldn't see the picture of the flier you posted from my phone. I can see it now from my desktop computer. Had I seen it later, I would have had the details. Thank you for being patient with me and providing the details regardless.

I was able to get 2 front row tickets for the show on Oct 23. woot!

I saw her this weekend in Red Lake, MN and had a blast. I got to go on stage and dance and she wore my hat a little during the show. She also gave me a drumstick and I had a chance to talk to Gilbert for awhile after the show. Here is most of the set list and may be slightly out of order.

WoW. Does she have an agreement with his estate to pay royalties on all the Prince covers? I know this is supposedly a benefit concert, but if her set list is similar at all the other shows she's doing in the wake of Prince's passing, royalties will become an issue.

she might. those performance royalities would help with the tax bill. but she doesn't need anyone's permission and he wrote most of her "solo" material anyway.

/// No she does not have to pay anything. No royalties for live performances and if you look around on this board or do a internet she is doing shows to raise money for The Purple Fund to donate money to many Twin Cities non-profits that Prince supported. She is working with his family.

Gilbert is and has been Sheila's manager for many years. One of Gilbert's sons, Mychael, is Sheila's guitar player. Elisa Fiorillo was one of Sheila's backup singers for the show. Liv Warfield had been doing shows with Sheila, but she had her own show that night.

She doesn't have to pay anything for using the songs in a live performance. It doesn't mean she's working with the family though.

Well, are the venues paying royalties? Somebody has to pay, right?

BMI uses an independent source of live pop concert information to identify and create a database of the top 300 concert tours and/or concert events/festivals each quarter. Set lists are solicited from headliners and opening acts performing at those events. A royalty payment is then calculated for each BMI-licensed work performed at each event. This calculation is based upon the license fees collected from each licensed tour or event. Works performed as part of a medley by either a headliner or opening act will be paid at a rate equal to one half of the full rate. Since the number of BMI-licensed works changes from one quarter to the next, as do the license fees collected by BMI from concert promoters and venues, the royalty rate for your works performed in live pop concerts will also change each quarter.

// Do you think her tour is going to make the top 300? 😳 This event is supporting Charities he supported. I don't think Sheila is doing anything bad.

Mark my word: Sheila E. will not be able to continue to have her live shows consist of 90% Prince songs without SOMEONE paying performance royalties. To the point of her likely alignment with Prince's family: That probably explains why she is not performing at the Official Tribute. Whatever the case, I've stopped trying to figure out all the factions.

She did interviews in Minneapolis were she said she is working with the family to put money into a fund to help with some of the non-profits he funded in Minneapolis and that she is not going to be at the Memorial show because she has another gig in NY that she cannot get out of.

A simple internet search can turn all of this up or checking out her Facebook. Oh if her tour is not in the top 300 do you really think she will get hit for performance royalties?

To be clear, there is ONE benefit Sheila E concert on Oct. 23 in Minneapolis to benefit the Purple Fund. I'm not certain if ALL proceeds from that concert will go to charities, but that would be a very nice thing.

Why are you so down on Sheila E? Having concerts for charity and not donating the money to the charity is fraud and a very serious legal matter.

I'm not "down on" Sheila E.; I'm just raising questions. Moreover, I haven't suggested fraud, so please don't infer otherwise. I'm merely making it clear that there is ONE benefit concert, from which some or all of the proceeds will be donated to the Purple Fund. That is all. The question of performance royalties is simply one that I find fascinating. I'm not an attorney, but I'm hopeful that one of our many resident esquires will chime in on the matter.
