Premiere: Andre Cymone Returns w/ Funky & Furious Protest Anthem “Black Man In America”

Premiere: Andre Cymone Returns w/ Funky & Furious Protest Anthem "Black Man In America"

This year will see the unveiling of Andre Cymone‘s first project since 2014’s self-released The Stone. A precursor to his next full-length (slated for a 2017 release,) Black Man In America is poised to build on the political edge laid down on his comeback record, inspired by the country’s watershed moment in activism and civil rights. Today, we bring you the title track his forthcoming release; a funky and anthemic stomper that channels the angst, frustration and fear of being a person of color in the land of the free in 2016.

.

It should be noted that the track also features contributions from Mic Murphy fromThe System on vocals and William “Hollywood” Doughty of Prince and Cymone’s early Grand Central outfit on vocals and percussion. A few weeks ago Cymone joined The Revolut...tor Prince at the historic First Avenue with Dez Dickerson and the full line-up; a reunion of the highest purple order. Now he’ll forge ahead with his own take on the evolved Minneapolis sound, one he himself helped develop and proliferate in the early eighties. Hear Andre Cymone’s “Black Man In America” down below and hold tight for the release of his new project.

Jump back to hear a young Cymone jam electric with the late icon on the Loring Park Sessions, recorded in 1977 at the house of Prince’s first manager, Owen Husney.

When they say funky, I was expecting/hoping for something like the Dance Electric. I'm hugely disappointed.
