None of it makes sense. Even people that are on these pain pills with an Rx have problems with the side effects. How would he have been able to work? I think this issue was recent and I believe it was for some real serious health issues. My understanding is you can hooked on these things in a matter of weeks.

Wouldn't take me weeks. I'd be knocked out after the first one. lol

-----

It took one for me and I was glued to my bed as sick as a dog from the side effects. I don't understand how people are seeing him as some super human person who could fuction on these things at his level for years.

I also think by having mis-labled pills may also show he was not as knowledgable about these drugs as the media would have you believe.

Yes but not everyone is affected like that. I know it doesnt affect me like that..and then theres the issue of dosage..Sounds like the mg. of ur meds were too high for you..Many peeps would just break the pill in half if they really needed it for pain but the dosage was too strong taking just one...
He very well could have functioned for some yrs(not 30!!) on a low dosage for pain that was occasionally upped. How he ended up where he did, with counterfeit pills, overdosing(?) on the plane and dead in an elevator with his clothes on backwards is a hotbed for speculation, endless theories and a true fucking mystery...

The most that I can say for the so called originals is that they were fun at the time. The only ones that I consider above average and not sub-par talented-wise are Sheila E and Lisa Coleman. The rest of them are disposable to me since talent is pretty much all I care about.

I have never felt any nostalgic or emotional attachment to any of them and eye candy doesn't figure into the equation, but for talent and talent alone I'll take Liv, Rosie, Bonnie, Elisa, Tamar and Shelby over any of them.

That said, it would have been good if they could have kept that spirit of comraderie that Apples felt toward all of them. Perhaps time will heal....hope springs eternal.

I agree with you about the talent. I'd add Donna Grantis and Ida Nielson to that list, at least as musicians (they don't qualify as muses or proteges really...seems like he was more of an uncle/mentor for them). The more I listen to them, the more I appreciate how good they really are. The Manchester 2014 show is pretty awesome. I can't tell about Hannah Welton. She keeps up but I feel like Sheila E is a much better drummer.

Certinly. I was trying to list people comparable to those that Apples noted.

As far as musicians I would put Rhonda Smith at the top of your list. Hannah is a sweet kid but she wasn't even as good as Cora IMO, let alone Sheila.

Rhonda Smith is awesome. Definitely at the top of the list. Yeah, I was lumping all the protege/muse/female bandmembers together (I think of Lisa Coleman as a musician/band member first and foremost), but I do believe in the early years those roles were blurred. (I think Wendy or Lisa or someone said they were all in love with each other.) Later those lines were more clearly drawn; there were those who were just proteges or muses or members of the band, especially in the last few years.

I give Hannah props for the courage to play in his band. She kept up for the most part. But he did have better drummers in the past. Donna and Ida could give any of the others a run for their money, IMHO. I had to take the time to watch some of their live shows to realize it, though.

I love this pic also. The way he looks at her and pretty much throughout the whole movie! They had such an amazing chemistry, especially considering she was cast in such a short time before filming

Don't get me wrong, I adore Appolonia, but even when the movie first came out I thought they were cute together but I only saw platonic chemistry.

Did Prince actually sit on the beach under an umbrella watching Apples surf while getting sand in his hair? Or is that something she is imagining because I just don't see Prince as a beachy type. Just cannot picture him on the beach in heels.

I've been wondering the same thing.

I bet he wasn't wearing this. lol

I dunno guys, Jill's voice really lifts a lot of songs up there imho. Sure she's only a singer but I think she was one of the most distinctive he ever worked with. I'd take her vocals over pretty much every featureless over the top wailer he had from 1988 onwards.

Not even up for debate as far as I'm concerned because it is a waste of time when someone doesn't care for anything that Prince did after the 80's.

I don't have an emotional attachment to any particular era. shrug

Hannah was, what, 23 when she first hooked up with Prince? Are we comparing her to Sheila or Cora when they were 23? I think she was pretty damn good for as young as she is and just the pressure of working with Prince where perfection is expected and mistakes really aren't tolerated.

Yes, I would compare her to Sheila at 23 and she'd still be less talented, but I don't necessarily believe that absolutely everyone who ever played with prince was a world class musician. Certainly most, but not all.

The reason Prince gave for working with Hannah and her hubby was moreso because of their beliefs IIRC. He seemed to enjoy mentoring them.

I think it's the usage of the word. Everybody doesn't speak the same slang.

I knew exactly what you meant by "pimp hand was strong".

Okay, so let's take another example. I don't know about in the states, but in the UK for a good long while it was usual for certain groups of people to describe stuff they think is shit as 'gay.' Now, weirdly, gay people don't like this, because the word gay also means, y'know gay people, and using gay as a synonym for shit is obviously pretty upsetting to them. When ppl mention this might be offensive, others might go, 'no no no, that's not what we meant, we just meant shit' but the fact is you're still using a word for shit that means something else as well. It's not that I don't understand what is meant, it's that you're using a word that means 'man who violent and exploitative' or 'man who is good at controlling his hos' as a synonym for 'man who is sexy as shit/extremely seductive' and y'know, that pretty much entirely fails to capture what is so sexy and special about Prince. And in the context of Apple's lovely heartfelt post, it's also pretty disrespectful to immediately reach for a word which positions her as just another of Prince's hos. Some people objected to that, and there is a reason why we objected. It's not that we don't understand, it's that we understand and don't like it.

See this is why I don't like how these qoutes are set up, becauase I don't know I am really responding to.

Perhaps, I didn't quite know what "pimp hand was strong" means to either of you.

So I will say this, "where I'm", I know exactly what we mean by "pimp hand was strong". And I will just leave it at that.

Don't worry, I know what you mean and understand it's just a turn of a phrase. I use it often myself to describe "Cat Daddies" of a certain age with ability to pull the ladies as it is colloquially intended, not more not less. Forget about the fact that Prince jokingly used both pimp and gigolo imagery in his songwriting, stage banter and general aesthetics: folks are in a sensitive space and feel compelled to defend his honor, I guess...

Thank you so much for criticizing the use of the term "pimp hand" here. It's disrespectful and inappropriate to use that term when responding to such a beautiful testimony.

And thank you to Apollonia for sharing her thoughts and personal experience.

So beautiful. I love Apollonia; she is such a genuine & sweet person!! I was reading an article yesterday where she talked about the making of Purple Rain and how she almost died. I never knew this story, but she was going into hypothermia from being in that cold lake and she said how Prince put his arms around her and held her and said "Don't die", and then she came-to. She said Prince was so warm and loving. Brings tears to my eyes!!

.

Here is the article:
