Does anyone here know how much Appolonia got paid for starring in the film Purple Rain. Just wondering cause I couldn't find any info on it online (Googled it to death, still couldn't). If anybody would know, it would be you orgers biggrin

Not sure but whatever she made and continues to make was enough for her to purchase properties in CA, Hawaii, and Paris. Plus she has some type of multi-media entertainment company - Kotero Entertianment. She obviously has made some smart financial decisions wink

Got a point there. Can't argue with that. wink

actually apollonia has said that she was a millionaire business woman in her early 20s. she has always had investments etc. i think PR just gave her a high profile, but she always had money of her own. remember she was driving a big brown merceds sedan when prince met her. wink

Say what you want to about Apollonia but you can't deny that she was a trailblazer. She was one of the first Latinas to have a major role in a motion picture. Before Apollonia you didn't see too many Latinas in film, with the exception of Rita Moreno.

Absolutley. Being half latina myself, as a young girl, it felt great to see Apollonia in Purple Rain as a love interest in the blonde obsessed 80s. nod

You know what I thought about guys. Vanity should have been a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild). Don't know if she actually was but she SHOULD have been. I mean, she was not a newbie to the business (acted and modeled before). If she had been a member there'd be no way in hell they would get away with offering her such an insulting and meager amount of money for something she co-wrote and was going to STAR in (co star, but star in never the less). Who knows though. She was probably so enthralled with P, and "out of it" half the time she just wasn't thinking. I could be wrong, but I bet Apples got more than 5,000 dollars. If she didn't, it would only be because it was her "debut" and she just wanted to make a name for herself (even so, she must have been mighty desparate) It's sad though, because when I looked up the annual salary of a person making minimum wage ($7.25 an hour) a full time employee makes $15,080 per year. If you go to Wikipedia the budget for that movie was 7.2 million, and grossed 68.4 million at the box office. And they wanna pay the co-star of a movie the amout they would give an extra on a movie set. SMDH disbelief

no one got a big paycheck. prince's managment paid the bands their regular weekly fees- that's why morris was pissed off and broke and didn't promote it. also why vanity left- she asked for more money and p said no. that 7 million was for the film; gear, technicians etc.

+=

apollonia was the only outsider so she wasnot under contract with prince's management and could negotiate a better fee. i agree that apollonia did not do the same job that vanity would have done. P & V would burned the cinemas down! but apples's lightness is a good balance to all the darkness in the film- the way it's shot and the subject matter.

+=

none of them could act wet in a rainstorm, but p, morris and jerome shine on film because of their natural charisma. i think jerome had the best chance for a career in movies, and he looked beautiful on film. p looks pretty when he pouts. morris has great timing but is stiff and self-conscious. with a little more training he could have gotten more work in film too.

Prince and Vanity's chemistry on screen would have been devastating to the senses! Everyone was already drawn to them as a couple, so just imagine what they would have done to the world! Was it Prince that said no to the money though or was it Warner management? I always like to think Prince didn't have anything to do with it. (wishful thinking I'm sure) but a girl can dream, right?

Believe it or not, Purple Rain was the very first film in which I saw a love scene between people of color. And it was beautiful.

Oh I believe it. The movie was so bold in so many ways. And yes the love scenes made me fall in love with Prince. love

Yes, she was. Also, First Latina to get a cover photo on JET Magazine. Never really understand the disdain towards her. So far, these past four months she remains silent. I respect her for that.

I agree. She is doing well for herself so she definately isn't broke. She is living well. She did the right thing to leave Prince camp and he was wrong when she said in an interview she wouldnt be successful if she left... she did became successful after she left even though she didn't continue the entertainment route. I hope she speaks out eventually as time goes by.

And also last time I checked she also owns a gym in Hawaii. But I am not so sure if she still has it.

I think in truth, it has nothing to do with Appolonia per say. It has to do more with nostalgia for Vanity not being the one to do Purple Rain when everyone from that era was primed for it.

This is sort of off topic but as much as I loved the movie and Prince and Appolonia individually I felt she was the wrong person for the role. She seemed too "old" for lack of a better word. I didn't feel any chemistry between them. She looked matronly even with her bosom on display imo. I'm probably in the minority, and it's beside the point anyway lol
I feel the same way. No chemistry whatsoever! She seemed very out of place. They didn't make a good couple at all, IMO.

U r so wrong!! They were perfect 2gether. Any1 who doesn't feel the chemistry between them must either have a heart of stone or are simply jealous of Apollonia

Appolonia was key to Purple Rain working, because Vanity and Prince were already an item. When we meet Appolonia in the film, we are seeing her for the first time, with no preconceptions, imo, so we can't predict how it turns out.

Good question, but I have no idea how much Apples or the rest of the cast of Purple Rain got paid. All I know in one of Vanity/Denise's interveiws she said that one of the reasons she left the film was because Prince only wanted to pay her $5000 for the part, while the producers of The Last Dragon were gonna pay her $300,000.

I thought the $300,000 was for The Last Temptation of Christ that fell through. That's prob why it said $80,000 for The Last Dragon.

Vanity in Martin Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ ... I could not picture that, it's one of my favourite pictures of all time.

Who was her (Vanity's) character going to be in that movie (The Last Temptation of Christ)? Never heard that before.

Mary Magdalene, could there be any other role !!!! This was when it was first scheduled to be made in 1983, so I guess she night have been still with Prince? so this would have been before Purple Rain. Sting and Ray Davies were also originally planned for the film, but when they made it in 1988 Bowie was in.

Also, she and P did not have a sexual relationship in real life. No drama. I always believed that just because P and Vanity were an item that doesn't mean it would have translated across the screen. In fact with all the drama that suppousedly was going on between P and Vaniity at that time I seriously doubt PR would have made it to the screen if she had fulfilled the role.

Jill JONES He would just let you be who you were and try to help bring it out. When you’re in his company, you’re like, “Yeah, we can do this.” That’s a great quality, even with all the sociopathic behavior that he can exhibit.

KOTERO One minute we’re hanging out, playing basketball like two buddies, and then the big kiss scene. It was in the barn and I had to be topless. He was really a gentleman—he looked straight in my eyes. We have great chemistry. But the whole world has this idea we dated. At the time, I was seeing David Lee Roth.

MAGNOLI I didn’t find it very difficult to direct them. Because they were already performers and because the story was organic to them, all they had to do was be themselves. But I feel that Prince, Morris Day, Jerome Benton, Apollonia — they were who they needed to be in those roles. There was no embellishment, there was no flourish. They stayed true to their characters.

Denise and Prince were professional people here. PR was their concept. It would've been great if they could've brought it to fruition together. We've never seen real interaction between the two, so it would've been interesting to see their chemistry. I think Denise would've brought more intensity to the role because it was more personal to her. Denise, I believe, left at the last minute, so the film was going to be made with her whether she and Prince were together or not.

Which is why I doubt PR would have made it to screen if she stayed. Too much drama with her. Leaving at the last minute and then they had to scramble and find a replacement. IMO filming would have become very difficult with her. Apollonia came along and brought some semblance of peace and professionalism. No drama ...

We'll agree to disagree on this one. I believe they would've been professional enough to do their job. They were still off and on as an item for a few years after that, so they obviously found ways to get along at times. lol

Off topic a bit....

Sheila E did a good job playing a bit of keyboard in the movie.

She is a very terrific drummer but I would like to see her play more instruments (she stated she can play piano and other instruments) onstage in the future and I was impressed she played the guitar at the BET tribute.
