Vanity 6 was meant to star Vanity. but she and Prince had a disagreement and she left. The role was given Apollonia. The band kept the name Vanity6 since a album was already close to finish as to come out a little before and when the movie "Purple Rain".:

Vanity 6 was an American R&B/Funk female vocal trio assembled by American musician Prince in mid–1981. The trio included his girlfriend Susan Moonsie, Boston native Brenda Bennett, and Denise Matthews, a model and Canadian B movie actress. Matthews was eventually re-christened “Vanity.”:

If you listen the soundboard recording of the Vanity 6 set (which is still on YT) as an opener on Prince's 1999 tour (Radio City in March 1983), the music is trés Prince. At that particular show he removed The Time from the bill and rumor has it some still played for Vanity, but Prince joined in. Its amazing music cloud9

the Vanity 6 album was really ahead of its time.We had never seen a girl group like that before! The album features funk,New Wave, pop, even early rap ("If A Girl Answers....").One of Prince's most unique side projects.

Yesterday I was reading on Jeff Munsen's facebook page that, according to what Prince told Steve Parke, Vanity designed the 1999 album cover. He saw it in the basement at Paisley Park when he worked there.

Other than a couple of songs from The Time, "Nasty Girl" and "The Glamorous Life" are the only Prince protege songs I can think of that still get airtime on classic R&B radio.

Nasty Girl, The Glamorous Life, Love Bizarre, and The Screams of Passion. I hear all 4 on R&B radio and various nights when they play Funk music.

Goddess4Real said: I watched this interview when it first aired. After watching this interview i became very intriqued with her. At a young age, i was able to look into her eyes and see Vanity was just a character and not who she wanted to be.

I have to say, it wasn't right away for me, but once i got older i felt she was putting on an act even BEFORE i knew she became a christian i thought she wasn't herself...i also didn't know about the immense drug usage. These are the photos where i feel she was truly at her happiest and most herself, Denise.

I think she looks so pretty here, and happy too.

This is my avatar..she just looks so comfortable in her own skin here.

This photo looks like it was right after her conversion started.

[Edited 7/22/16 15:09pm]

Yes exactly! Hence why I don't think Prince was her soulmate. I think Denise found her place with her Ministry. Maybe she had to go through all that drama to get to where she was.

And listening to some recent interviews with Brenda, seems like her and Susie found their place happliy with their families.

She was lucky that depite her long time drug use that runined her kidneys and led to her early demise, that it didn't really affect her looks, even at the end. Some other people ain't so lucky.

nod I know i thought that too..great genetics i guess.

You know Naomi Campbell is another like that. All the cocaine she did but she still looks good.

I always felt that Morris Day had a crush on Vanity. And I don't mean a "who wouldn't" crush, I always felt like he liked her.
