May 19, 1992

It's 24 years ago since Ingrid Chavez released her only Paisley Park album, May 19, 1992.

.

From wikipedia: May 19, 1992, Chavez's debut solo album, was released in 1991 on Paisley Park Records. (The title is the first anniversary of the date the cover art was photographed). The album was initially intended to set her spoken-word poetry to music supplied by Prince. It was recorded gradually from late 1987 to mid-1991. When Warner Bros. pushed for the album to have sung vocals in place of the spoken word, Prince abandoned the project. Five of the album's tracks ("Elephant Box", "Slappy Dappy", "Jadestone", "Whispering Dandelions" and "Heaven Must Be Near")[2] ended up as spoken word with atmospheric music by Prince under his Paisley Park alias, and the remainder were relatively poppy tracks with sung vocals, co-produced by Ingrid with Prince's studio hands Michael Koppelman and Levi Seacer, Jr.. The singles "Hippy Blood", "Heaven Must Be Near", and "Elephant Box" were released as singles (along with club remixes)."

From Discogs:

Real Name: Ingrid Julia Chavez

Born : 1965 // Atlanta, GA, United States

.

Mexican-American poet and vocalist Ingrid Chavez, born in 1965, was a Prince protégé from 1987 to 1991, and was married to David Sylvian from 1992 to 2005. Her debut album was initially intended to just set her spoken-word poetry to atmospheric music supplied by Prince, but when Warner Brothers pushed for the album to have sung vocals, Prince abandoned the project, so half of the album ended up as intended, and the remainder consisted of pop songs co-produced by Ingrid with Prince's studio hands Michael Koppelman and Levi Seacer Jr. Chavez also wrote the bulk of Madonna's hit "Justify My Love", and received a large out-of-court settlement for not being credited on that single's initial release. In later years, Chavez focused on parenthood and photography, and occasionally contributed vocals to various David Sylvian releases.

From Fun With Vinyl, "Ingrid Chavez was first known, cryptically, to Prince fans as The Spirit Child on his 1988 ‘Lovesexy’ album. Chavez was encouraged by Prince to write 21 poems and he promised to make them into a poetry album together with her. In late 1987 the two of them went into the studio and, while Prince played a keyboard, Ingrid read through all 21 poems. Naturally, the project was then put on hold. Obviously, record executives had misgivings about the project and wanted some songs with sung vocals vice all spoken word. In the end, ‘May 19, 1992’ was released in 1991 with five spoken word tracks out of the total 11 tracks on the LP. One of those spoken word tracks, “Elephant Box”, was released as a single."

Love this album. She is such a beautiful spirit. Love Heaven Must Be Near, Hippy Blood, Spiritual Storm, Elephant Box, and Little Mama. The whole album is bliss. Prince was right when he said the album sounded like Spring time in Paris... Something to that effect. I must admit, the ending of Hippy Blood used to scare me when I was younger though.

I really like Elephant Box! I do like Ingrid a lot. I said in another post that I always thought she would make a great voice over actress. She has a little something extra in her voice. I love listening to her talk. I thought she was gorgeous in GB!

I think this was the first associate project that I bought and heard in full at the beginning of my fandom and to this day it's one of my favorite pieces of work period. It really is beautiful. I enjoyed her early demos/skyfish project as well. Ingrid is a very talented woman.
