New Appreciation for 3rdEyeGirl's

Like many Prince fans, I was initially hesitant to embrace his last band 3rdEyEGirl. Other than their logo reinterpreting the When Doves Cry face, that wasn't anything that special I could tell about them other then they were extremely talented ladies. But listening to some of the 3RdEyEGirl concerts that have been floating, I am noticing just how good they sound performing the 70s and 80s songs with a hard rock edge. The limited instrumentation gives their live show a very old school feel. And you can tell Prince was having fun playing with them. Their version of Bambi is 10 times better than the album version. They bring to mind the peak-Revolution sound of the 80s when keyboards are added to fill out the mix. Donna even has a Wendy vibe when she's shredding on the infamous solos. Even though it sounds like they are playing along with backing tracks on certain shows, the sound is the closest to the organic 80s sound that I grew up with. I'm looking to chekcing out more conerts from their tour.

Never understood some of the shade and hate these nice ladies got around here. Donna is pretty damn good and Hannah is sweetheart who friggin' kills on the drums.

I even like her voice. Something about that "white girl" sound that worked so well with Prince. I hope at least Hannah gets a shot either as a solo or in a new band.

They were all talented. I guess people didn't like the fact that Donna was doing some of the guitar solos. But other than that I don't see why they did get any hate in the first place.

Personally, I loved the sound they made.

.

They really could rock out - the HitNRun shows in London, particularly the early ones when they played songs suited to that sound, were absolutely incredible.

.

The Shepherd's Bush Empire show was Top 5 - and I've seen quite a few at this point.

.

I also quite liked Hannah's vocals - just a different sound and texture to the music - and she (is!) was a great drummer, and seemed genuine and pleasant as a person. As indeed, do Donna and Ida.

.

My only regret about them was that the album PLECTRUMELECTRUM was, if anything, not rock enough - there was too much smoothness in too many of the tracks.

.

That said, the title track was awesome, and the album has 5 other really great tracks - WOW, ANOTHERLOVE, MARZ and FUNKNROLL.

.

Overall, what's not to like?
