Denise's death

Could Denise Vanity Matthews death have pushed Prince over the top? I mean was he troubled by her passing that it made him make some bad decisions? Please don't hate me for asking? I'm just a heartbroken fan looking for answers.

I'm sure it hit him pretty hard. I don't know if they still kept in touch in recent years, but it seemed he still cared about her.

Is it more than a coincidence that Prince's health seemed to deteriorate after Vanity died? Maybe her death hit him real hard & more than we realised. He said that he loved her and she said that he was the only man she ever truly loved.

Besides his parents, if there is a heaven, I know she was there to greet him with open arms.

I've been thinking the same thing, too.

I absolutely agree with you. Sometimes people can put up such a brave front. But underneath be so vulnerable. The one thing that's really helping me to except his passing is that hopefully the two of them are together again in Paradise.

I posted this in the Prince Forum....

"IMO her death affected him greatly. If anything the Feb 16 shows in Melbourne, which my cousin attended where he talked so candidly and tenderly about her, and dedicated songs to her showed his TRUE feelings once and for all!. She wasn't some fling, he loved her deeply! I went to the Feb 20 show 1 in Sydney and I really enjoyed myself (out of the the 3 times I have seen him over the years its my favourite cause its just him with piano), but learning from my cousin and other fans descriptions about that particular night I wish I was there. In fact those Feb 16 shows are on top of my list, I want to hear it for myself, it took me over 2 weeks to listen to the last show and not cry I think I will be be ready now to hear the rest of the shows and put it in context."

Whether she was Vanity or Denise I think she was fabulous and she helped alot of people. I thought she would survive her latest illness this like she had done so many times in the past......but it was not to be sad My favourite Vanity role was on Jackie Collins (also RIP) Lady Boss 1992 as Mary Lou Morley. She and Phill Morris had great chemistry, and I wish that was available on dvd or blu-ray. I wish alot of Prince related stuff was available! eg The Home Coming Tour and Aftershow MN 1983 Prince/The Time and Vanity 6!

Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

I think he truly loved her too, in his tribute to her he said they loved each other deeply and that she loved him for the artist he was and he for the artist she was trying to be...what always baffled me was that he wasn't there for her when she had her health scare in 1993...they told her she was going to die! She went on to help others and I've always admired her character, kind heart, and loving dispositon...Prince should have married her! Susannah would also have been another great choice. It's unfortunate that Prince couldn't be satisifed by one woman alone back then..."King Kong never ever left me alone My King Kong never ever looked at any other woman..." Vanity/Denise is and always will be my favourite of Prince's proitegees<3

^ Wow that is really beautiful.

Prince was very much a behind the scenes person. We don't know that he didn't help her. Or perhaps he offered and she declined.

That is beautiful...where is it from? Who was the artist that drew that portrait of Denise?

I agree...she had so much love and respect for him up until her final days that i am sure they were in touch and he did ask her if she needed anything..she was proud and may have declined due to the fact she didn't want to use him in any way.

Just knowing him, praying for him and loving him always was enough for her.

Thank you both for liking my work! XXX I did that drawing I was very unhappy when I learnt that Denise was gone and then to find Princie follow soon after was more than I could bare...

Apart from that, I agree with you both she probably did that...she never came across as someone who used others but instead as a genuinely loving and caring soul.

I truly believe that Vanity aka Denise Matthews was the love of Prince's life. If she had stayed with him and married him there would be no Mayte and Manuela. He might have cheated because it seems like he had wandering eyes but he really loved her and no distance or length of time between them could change that. The fact that he publicly spoke about her demise- being uber private- says a lot.
