Urban Dictionary

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Did he actually work on the song or did they use a sample of a song he wrote?

I nominate "jawn" as the dumbest slang word ever.

Good for him! Many more of these younger acts should work with the older, established producers and songwriters.Maybe then they would actually have some great material for a change.

sounds like they used the synth line from Alexander O Neal's If you were here tonight which, i think,

Monte produced. So i guess he didnt really work on the song.

Questo should have known that as a so called MPLS sound expert.

That's exactly right. Monte's songwriting credit is noted as "interpolation" and he wrote "If You Were Here Tonight".

So how come you didn't notice the use of the melody?

I never knew he wrote A O'Neal "If U were here tonight" - classic...or

Janet Jackson - "Pleasure Principle"...which I just sing-a-long-to like a madman when driving... This song never fails to lift my spirits - just so damn energetic!

Go Monte!!! What a lovely nugget of information!

It might be harder to hear because "Work" was a sample of the "Sail Away" riddim, not a mechanical sample from Alexander O'Neal's master recording.

"Work"'s producer Boi-1da was trying to do was bring back a dancehall riddim, and he chose a 1998 riddim called "Sail Away", which dozens of dancehall artists used. "Sail Away" was a replay of "If You Were Here Tonight".

^ Thanks Phunk!!! I'll be hunting that down!

I am so surprised Monte did these songs - I must confess, I always thought he kinda made up the numbers in the background...cos Morris, Jesse and Jam/Lewis get all the attention...but "PP" by Janet...damn I never knew that!

So Force MDs now on my list to hear!
