The one and only Eric Leeds gave The Quietus an interview the other day.

I actually think this should be in the Prince-Music and more forum since Mr.Leeds talks about his time with Prince but I leave it up to the moderators to decide where this should be posted.

edit: When I first read the interview, it came with a Parade era picture of Prince and Alan Leeds in an elevator at Heathrow Airport. Interestingly, they replaced that with a still from the Girls And Boys videoclip depicting Prince and Eric Leeds.

Nothing really new revealed but some deeper insights than before on things that have been covered in past interviews.

My only regret is that it's so much focused on 8, with still some focus on The Flesh and 16 and that's pretty much it. It'd have been interesting to have Eric share more insights about what Prince seemed to have in mind when he recorded the more electronic 24 (1988), details about the recording process of 24 (1993) which featured a totally different line-up than previous incarnations of Madhouse, and last but not least details about the composing, recording and editing process of N.E.W.S..

Overall I find it sad that journalists always focus on Prince's golden years in their interviews, and almost entirely overlook what came afterwards. One could argue that those interviews are aimed to mainstream readers but on the other hands let's not fool ourselves, most of the poeple who will click on a link and read this are Prince fans to at least some extent.

Instead of rehashing the interview from the Last Miles website, the interviewer could have done a better job covering the things that the Last Miles interview overlooked.

I suspect those stories, as with the story of The Family, will be repeated endlessly while many facts will remain undiscovered. For example a story like the story Eric previously told about the genesis of The Sex Of It, this is the kind of anecdote that's priceless.

The one about The Sex Of It? I don't remember. Story goes as such:

- In 86 or 87 P had promised Darnell he'd give him a song one day (I think they met in Paris).

- Eric was tripping on the latest Kid Creole album from 87 but never discussed it with P.

- One day Eric arrives at PP right after P left and the engineer plays him the cut P had just recorded, it was The Sex Of It.

- Eric trips on the track and decides to record a horn arrangement for it by himself, thinking "we'll see if P likes it or not", and he records it with Kid Creole's sound in mind.

- Next day P tells Eric he loves the horns arrangement, Eric asks him "do u know what u gonna do with the song" and P replies "I'm gonna send it to Kid Creole"

- P then forgot about it and sent it only about 2 years later.

However according to Princevault, P promised to give Darnell a song when they met during the Lovesexy tour, so something doesn't add up when u compare this info with Eric's claims, so IDK. It's possible that P already planned to send Kid Creole a song BEFORE he met Darnell, as he is known to have spontaneously offered songs to some artists before. I see no reason to doubt Eric's story.

lol

That´s what I thought, too. Eric and Alan Leeds are probably THE most outspoken ex-collaborators ever. Always honest, always very blunt, and , in my opinion, never negative, always constructive.

I´ve talked with him on two occasion, in Hamburg in 1994 and at Paisley Park in 2002 ,and even when he has some constructive criticism to offer, he always does it very diplomatically and like a true gentleman.

I think you and him would get along very well. lol

While reading this I was quite surprised HOW outspoken he is. I mean, he doesn´t beat around the bush when it comes to his dislike for certain songs or compositions.

I don´t agree with everything he says though. And I don´t get why he didn´t get the concept behind Lovesexy. But, all in all, he´s one of my all time favorite band members.

"...I do have some personal recordings of various unreleased jam sessions that I feel are more exciting than any of the released Madhouse material. "

.

Eric has his own Vault going?! Great interview, thanks.
