Sinead O’Connor will no longer perform ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’

Not sure if this is the right forum, but...

Per her FB page: OK, the time has come for me to cease singing Nothing Compares 2U. The first principle of the manner in which I'm trained as a singer (Bel Canto) is we never sing a song we don't emotionally identify with. After twenty-five years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it. I don't want audiences to be disappointed coming along to a show and then not hearing it, so am letting you know here that you won't. If I were to sing it just to please people, I wouldn't be doing my job right, because my job is to be emotionally available. I'd be lying. You'd be getting a lie. My job is to give you honesty. I'm trained in honesty. I can't act. It just isn't in my training. I have ceased singing other songs over the years for the same reason.

I don't blame her for retiring the song. But her version kills both The Family's and Prince's.

Coincidentally, March 17th is the only day of the year I ever listen to Sinead O'Connor.

She once said that, after the ugly "incident" with Prince, she has to try to seperate the song from the songwriter.I guess she got tired of having to do that.

Good for her! I can think of so many artists who I wish would delete certain songs from their concert repetoires. I mean, after you've been singing the same songs thousands of times for 30 or 40 years, it's time to retire some of them!

Agreed on hers being the better version. But I'm just curious as to why you've set aside one day per year to listen to an artist?

Indeed, at least one artist in particular springs to mind when I think of songs I'd prefer them never to perform again. wink

Honestly, and I say this as a fan of Sinead, i'd say yeah. She'll probably come back to it after a few years break. Fair play to her for letting people know.

I'm not a Sinead O'Connor fan. But she does have some great songs. And the only time I remember she has some great songs is on St. Patrick's Day when I'm looking for Irish artists to upload to my mp3 player for the day.

You are a pop singer and you are not going to sing your only top hit in concert? That is a ballsey move. Like Lynnard Skynnard saying they will never play Freebird again, or Rob Base refusing to perform It takes Two.

His live version from 1990 (,River Plate Stadium,Buenos Aires, Argentina), kills his live version with Rosie.

That's Prince's version to which I was referring. I don't care for that one at all either.

Agreed, sexton. P and Rosie seem to be over-emoting in that version. Sometimes less is more. wink

Is't thst song the only thing she's known for? it's the only think I know here for.

I checked, this song was #1 everywhere, she's only had 3 other top 40 hits and no other top 10 hits.

The vocal arrangement is a big part of why I don't like Prince's or The Family's version. Sinead smoothed the song out and made it listenable.

Sinead did a great version of the song and a beautiful video to go with it, but really, does anyone give a shit about her? She's famous for 1 song and ripping the pope's picture up on live tv. Big deal!
