Man, Vanity was a handful

Reading Nikki Sixx "Heroin Diaries" about how Vanity moved in with him after Prince was done with her.

Girl was OUT OF CONTROL on Coke and Smack.

They used to hide in his closet and smoke rock until the FEAR set in and then press his Westwood Security panic button house alarm. They stopped coming because Sixx would answer the door naked with a shotgun.

V used to send herself roses with cards attached from Prince begging her to leave Nikki and come back to Minneapolis to him.

All BS, at least according to Nikki who believed it until he caught her doing it.

Vanity said Prince was small everywhere.

Sixx dissed him in the diaries on several occasions but then admitted to listening to Prince on the rare occasions he was sober.

Music knows itself

Man, out of all the Prince proteges Vanity has got to be my least favourite. She's never interested me. I've heard a couple of Vanity 6 songs and thats it. I really think she's overated as a Prince protege tbh.

Odd how Prince's ex broads go to disgusting Motley Crue members: Mayte to Tommy Lee and Vanity to Nikki Sixx. I have always loved Vanity but at that time she as not worthy of Prince and she proved it. Neither was Mayte.

Right, forgot about Mayte and TL.

Guess that means Andy Allo will end up with Vince Neil.

I wonder if Prince wrote Darling Nikki for Nikki Sixx?

I don't like to think of myself as a hater, but this is one woman I've never understood. She has little or no talent and is a druggy who now hides behind her "new found" religion. I'm glad Prince dumped her.

She was my first crush. giggle

I saw the kung-fu movie produced by Berry Gordy, The Last Dragon, when I was something like 7 and she was in it. I only found out much, much later that the woman in the film was Vanity (I had been a Prince fan for 10+ years by the point when I realized it). Sort of explains a whole lot about the taste I was about to develop in women!

She actually left Prince

and I love her Vanity 6 period with Prince

could not have been the Triple threat without her

she OWNED that frontman spot: sexiness, charisma... have U ever heard her version of Sex Shooter?

And she isn't a druggy

She needs hemo-dialysis 5X per day (20 min) to stay alive.

She ODed in the 90's and found religion when she managed to survive.

According to Nikki Sixx (who was a DOPE FIEND, she had a "problem" with coke).

Hmm. I like Vanity a lot (I pretty much like all the characters in Prince's fucked up universe 1976-2000). But I think she's a little overrated.

She is definitely an attractive woman but I don't understand why people act as if she is THE Prince girl.. she was around for one era. Her album is really good catchy synthpop and her voice is good enough, but I feel like some people act as if she's so much superior to Apollonia based on vocals alone.. IMO, they're really not that far apart. Vanity is no Aretha Franklin.

Overall I feel like she is a great Prince protegee, sexy, had a good album, and had a very nasty and slutty vibe which is cool.. she resembled Prince a little in those ways. But she was only really around for a year or two (?). IDK. I feel like she's really overhyped on the org when she really didn't do too much. Maybe this has to do with the fact she was Prince's first ever female protegee so she holds a special place in hearts. I like her. Personally, I prefer Apple

Also I don't think people should make fun of her drug habits.. afaik, she's off it and I'm willing to take her word for it. People do change.

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

Yeah, I guess. A lot of people do like her. I mean she's overrated to me in the way that I don't get all the love for her. But in the end, we all love whichever Prince girl appeals the most to us, and nobody's wrong. cool

I think the comparison with Vanity is rarely about the vocals (neither of them are that great). It's that Vanity - the character - is meant to be the female mirror image of Prince at the time, the DM/Controversy/1999 Rudeboy.

Apollonia as great as she is not that mirror image of Prince despite doning the same get-up as her predecessor, Vanity came across as harder and raunchier, Apollonia softened that same character around the edges. I think that works better for the film - because the film had to reach a wider audience and needed that softer side of the character to show through because all the other lead characters are such self-absorbed unlikeable assholes. But Vanity is the essence of that female counterpart character, that's why a lot of people often favour her. (I like 'em both myself!)

Good response, I agree with most of what you're saying. She definitely was like a female Prince (iirc he even referred to her as his mirror reflection) in terms of being dirty, nasty, shocking, but really "cool" while succeeding in looking like him.

In the end, it's more about personal preferences. Being more of a relaxed person in real life, Apollonia's sweeter nature and innocence appeals to me more than Vanity. But thanks to your response I can see why more people lean towards her, she was more of a badass too. I sometimes wonder if the plot was revised to become safer when Apollonia came OR she just happened to play the character in such a ditzy way... responding to "The Slap" in tears.. I can't see Vanity just taking it.. that's why I wonder if Apple is just happened to respond that way or was told to respond like that. If she was told to, then personally I don't think Vanity would have made much of a difference. This film was a risk, and if it got too intense/dark, I think it might have failed. And you're right about the film working better this way.. Apollonia was loveable, and it helped the film.. and a lot of people are generally attracted to the image of a guy being 'masculine' and a girl being 'feminine' (hope I'm not stepping on any toes with this, not trying to say being in control isn't feminine)

Purple Rain really was a great film (even with all the assholes) but one thing I wish they did was not make Prince's character's hitting so one-dimensional. What was up with him hitting girls only? It wouldn't have justified his hitting of his girlfriend, but I think if The Kid was shown to erupt in angry outbursts at men such as Morris/Billy/his father (all assholes who made at least one move in the movie that would usually warrant physical violence from someone like The Kid) more often, it wouldn't have seemed AS mysoginistic and made it more apparent to the audience that he suffered from violence problems because of his violent home life. The fact he hit one person in the movie and that person was a girl makes people lose sympathy, I think. It makes him look just like a douche (which he was, but a psychologically messed up one). IDK, something along those lines. Then again, it was made in 1983 when I have a feeling political correctness wasn't as prominent (though people called it out)

Maybe they could have addressed that issue ^ and more if they had more time.. they did write in the script a scene where he fights The Time members. Unfortunately, the budget wasn't that big and I think that's why the film is a little incomplete. Back to the topic, I do like both Apple and Vanity's albums.

Vanity had great beauty, lots of charisma and decent acting skills, that's about it.

She most certainly did not have even a single shred of musical talent IMO. I can out-sing her... lol

Whether or not she was a handful due to her addictions, well she says so herself so there is no reason to be defensive on her behalf or to romanticize her for nostalgic reasons.

Seeing what one wishes to see rather than what is actually there serves no one....let's be thankful that she found solace and sobriety instead of death destruction.

Rather than drool over some decades old charicature of a woman created by Prince and other men, why not keep Denise, the real person in your positive thoughts/prayers?

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Vanity was an intriguing woman....incredibly sexy, with lots of attitude and strikingly good looks.I always say that Prince should have done everything in his power to keep her on board for the Purple Rain movie.Their scenes together would have sizzled. And can you imagine how amazing a second Vanity 6 album would have been?!

Unfortunately, drugs eventually ruined her career and nearly killed her.Such a shame. If she had played her cards right, she could have been massively successfully.

I'm sure she's done stupid things - like many others, but what's in the past is in the past.

As far as the music goes; I really, really like Nasty Girl, but that's about it. Her vocals - likewise with Appolonia's, make my testicles lodge themselves up in my nostrils.

Vanity was beautiful but seems insane. Even with the religion thing, seems a little crazy. I'm glad she's found religion but something seems off. I think the most well rounded of all his women was Manuella who has seemed to have completely moved on with no hang ups. Next would be Mayte who seems to be a really good person, especially when it comes to the things she does with animals. On that show she could be a little bratty but that was just immaturity, I think. But yeah, Vanity- totally insane.

Compared to Apollonia, Vanity may be considered overrated by some for several reasons.

First of all, Vanity is more well-known and remembered by people. She recorded 3 albums compared to Apollonia's two (as far as I know). The music videos for "Nasty Girls", "Pretty Mess" and "Under the Influence" stayed in heavy rotation on music video shows during their time periods while "Sex Shooter" did not.

"Nasty Girls" remains a staple on old-school R&B/Soul radio today while "Sex Shooter" does not. Warner Brothers supported the "Vanity 6" album, which was certified Gold, while the label dropped the ball on the "Apollonia 6" album, abandoning it after the first single and even refusing to release it on compact disc, outside of a few copies in Japan. Nothing from her solo album received radio play in my neck-of-the-woods while several of Vanity's singles were extremely popular on radio.

Vanity is also more well known for her Hollywood projects than Apollonia.

Vanity made several higher-profile promotional appearances in support of all of her albums and movies while Apollonia did not. I honestly don't think the average Joe who was around in the 80's and remembers Apollonia can even name one thing she did after Purple Rain.
