"It didn't take long" meaning disrespect was shown in the original post?

Yeah...those albums sound very dated....Keep in mind the trends u r talking about? Prince was starting them...Nah...not everything P did was genius...But this whole W&L made Prince shit needs to end...real quick....

And this is coming from someone who digs the girls....A lot....That said, congrats to the girls...Glad to see them get their shine....

Dirty Mind... had a heavy new wave bent that was around for a couple years at least.

1999... same sound and Lisa's vibe starts to kick in here anyway.

Controversy... just a so-so record imo, one could mistake for a Cameo or Midnight Star album.

SOTT... has W&L's sound ALL over it -- credited or not.

LoveSexy... sounds hella corny today, sorry but it does.

Rubbish. That is Prince's sound. And "Lisa's vibe starts to kick in" on 1999???

The wooh is on the one!

No, meaning this thread quickly turned into yet another one of those "how much/how little did W&L influence Prince's sound" debates.

The OP set the stage for that.

V10LETBLUES

Congratulations ladies!

And in the Pop/Rock side of their careers, I am sure the fact that Prince's music without them took a drastic and off the cliff dive is a good boost to their egos even if they are nice enough to never admit it. It is the elephant in the room people do not like to acknowledge.

Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 had no input from Wendy, and little no traces from or input from Lisa, except maybe some vocals. I hear no Lisa in the first The Time albums either. I admit that their influence gave a cool new approach to Prince music from Purple Rain to Parade, and gave it exciting nuances and a different direction than earlier. But even though hints of the french riviera, western european upper class music and jazz is very much enjoyable for the elite, alot of us fans also appreciate the filthy, dirty, raunchy and raw attitude of his new wave rock, his deep funk pocket and gospel influences he got from everywhere else than these two talented women. He even got alot of his so called "white" influence from members like Andre and Dez Dickerson. Prince would do good without them. But yeah it's true, they probably helped him cross over, as the industry was very divided by race. But people are giving them way too much credit for making Prince the star that he was. He already started becoming a star with 1999. I love these girls, but to act like he wouldn't be shit without them is absurd.

You know what took an even more drastic end off the cliff dive than Prince after they split? Wendy and Lisas career. I'm not hating on them, just speaking the truth. These are what the sales told us. If you compare their sales after they split with Prince, the dive is a million times greater. Sign of The Times got incredibly reviews and response from music lovers, Batman was a fun party album, Lovesexy is one of his most underrated albums, and are now loved by most of his fans. Who suffered the most you say? And we are both just speculating. There's no evidence or science involved in these assumptions.

Wonderful to see the girls get a well deserved award!

An award that they got for the work they produced after they let go of their "prince-era" sound, after eroica, I suppose...

In my opinion it's clear that Wendy & Lisa's presence influenced Prince sound in those days. To say that they made his sound is rubbish. Similarly, Prince heavily influenced their sound on their early albums, not suprisingly their 3 most popular albums here...

I would think that's what happens when great musicians work together extensively, with the stronger talent naturally being the most influential one on the others, in this case Prince.

I suppose the events that ispired the Girlbros album, were such a strong influence that they dimished Prince's influence in their sound, just like W&L's influence has dimished in P's music after their departure and other people and things inspired P.

Personally, it was when W&L dropped that Girlbros album that I could see and hear them apart from Prince's music. To this day I absolutely love that album. Their work took a turn after that, imo and became far more interesting... worthy of an award... wink
