The Time Montgomery, AL 2-15-2014 review

This is the short version.

I went and saw Morris Day and the Time at the Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, AL on February 15, 2014. This was my first show of the year and my 64th overall.

Here is the line up:

Morris Day-Vocals and Cool

Jellybean Johnson-Drums

Monte Moir-Keyboards

Tori "Freak Juice" Ruffin-Guitar

Ricky "Freeze" Smith-Bass

Jeff McNeely-Keyboards

Sylvester Donald-Valet and Dancer

Here is the setlist with my comments to follow

1. DAT Intro

2. Intro

3. Cool

4. Get it up

5. Pandemonium

6. Chocolate

7. The Walk

8. The Bird

9. Jungle Love

The show was at the Garrett Coliseum a venue built in 1953 and it was showing its age. It was a Valentine's concert with Calvin Richardson, Big Rob and Terri Right, K-Ci & JoJo with the Time closing the show. The Time were suppose to close the show at 10 p.m. We headed to the venue shortly after 9 p.m. and patiently waited for show time. Well it was running WAY behind. K-Ci & JoJo didn't even show up at the hotel until we were leaving to go to the venue and they were suppose to be on before the Time. Big Rob was doing his full show and didn't even get off the stage until almost 11 p.m. K-Ci & JoJo followed(no band, they were singing to backing tracks). By the time they got done and the stage was switched over it was almost midnight. There was a hard curfew in effect and the power was gonna be cut at midnight.

The Dat intro started at 11:45 p.m. The band hit the stage and played the old school rock intro. There was no room for me to stand on stage tonight so I had to watch from behind the stage with the curtain pulled back. Morris and Sly hit the stage and the band launched into Get it up. The band was in top form and gave it all they had knowing at any minute they were going to pull the plug. Tori was wailing, Freeze was thumping, Jellybean was holding down the beat while Monte and Jeff were manning the keys and Sly was the ever present valet. What can you say about Morris? He is still one of the best front man in the business. Singing and dancing better than ever. Well Midnight rolled around and unfortunately they told the band to wrap it up. They had done the beginning of their normal show and had to cut to the end. The band closed with The Walk, then straight to the Bird with folks heading on stage to dance and closed with Jungle Love. The show was about 25 minutes long. Definitely the shortest show I have ever seen them do.

I can not stress enough that the length of the show was NOT the band's fault at all. They were at the venue at 9:30p.m. ready and willing to go on stage at their scheduled time of 10 p.m. The promoter really dropped the ball on this one. It was still a great show, everybody just wishes it could have been longer. We didn't get back to the hotel until almost 1 a.m. and most of the band had early flights so that pretty much wrapped up my adventure. I went back to my room, crashed and headed home the next day. Hopefully I won't have to wait so long to see my next show. Props to all the fellas for their continuing hospitality whenever I come to see them
