BTW, Morris Day has a new song with Jam and Lewis coming out on their new album.

Morris told the absolute truth about Prince. For all those that have asked what would Morris be without Prince, ask yourselves what would Prince be without Morris Day? Morris is the drummer, uncredited because Prince is an asshole, on nearly every good Prince song back in the day worth a damn. That's right Morris Day is also an uncredited member of The Revolution. Morris Day made Purple Rain as big as it was. He was funny and engaging. Prince was terrible in that movie outside of his musical performance scenes. Without Morris, without The Time, Prince posibbly never finds his footing, and gets dropped by WB before 1982.

Morris still said Prince is a GENIUS and was something to watch how fast he recorded & created songs. If Morris allowed himself 2 b uncredited. That is his fault not Prince's!!!!!

Unless any associated artists comes out and say they made Prince and he would be nothing without them, the statements above hold no merit. They may call him an asshole but they also call him a genius and almost always appreciate, the musical and artistic experience in terms of the craftsmanship with him.

Sorry, dude, but here in Detroit, at that time, Morris Day was the bigger star. Nobody really started caring about Prince until the 1999 tour and even then The Time and Vanity 6 were the draw. We dressed like Morris. We talked like Morris. We danced like Morris. People came away from the 199 tour digging Prince too, but it was Morris and Vanity who had the attention of Detroiters before that. Without Morris and Vanity and to a lesser extent Andre Cymone, Prince never makes enough relate-able music to justify staying on WB. Just as he molded them, they influenced and inspired him and contributed the key performances in the studio, onstage and onscreen that led to Prince's pop star fame.

Morris called Prince a genius and he is absolutely right, in some respects. It doesn't mean that Morris Day isn't the drummer on a lot of Prince's best songs. At the time of recording, do you think Prince or Morris planned that MD's performance would be uncredited? I don't think so. Prince decided to leave him uncredited, most likely because he was building a false narrative for himself and in the end he failed to credit dozens of people of dozens of releases over the years. Prince is still a genius for drawing inspiration from those musicians and putting all of it together to make great music out of it.

It's been said before, but Prince is only as good as the best ideas of those closest to him at the time of recording.

I disagree! Maybe Morris cool swagger did get a lot of attention from Detroiters. But Prince's biggest fans have always been in Detroit with or without Morris & still is! Eye know "The Time" did steal a lot of his shine in a lot of urban cities on those tours. Because they were more real & peeps identified with them more. But Prince downplayed his urban side too capture a more pop audience. His creation of The Time was to release his more urban muziq through them. But he was just as funky as any of them and still is!

Eye'm not downplaying Morris's talent. But U DEAD WRONG on Prince was only big only from drawing inspiration from them! Prince's biggest hits have always been his ONE MAN BAND cuts. Prince is gifted at taking others ideas and creating them into his own unique sound, but most musicians do get inspiration from others musicians. But that doesn't mean Prince still can't go in the studio as a one man band and create a song all by himself from scratch! Who U think created the funky bassline to 777-9311!? Morris drum patterns is nothing that Prince couldn't do himself! Its just he was able to record faster with them.

So sorry dude U are wrong!!!!

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I disagree totally with that, even Prince admitted that he got sloppy on a lot of credits when it came to those 1978-1986 periods

Lisa Coleman (who tend to be very on point on what happened) also said, She and Morris Day worked on a lot of the music with Prince -especially the protege stuff. Morris Day would not be able to control if Prince credits him or not.

Yeah, A lot of those hits came out of rehersals and jam sessions. Even Monte Moir was quoted as saying, (talkin to the othrer band mates) "Be careful what you play, because it will probably end up on WB records."

Prince recorded HUNDREDS of songs non- stop during that period! So Morris couldn't go to a lawyer and sue Prince for stealing his ideas, or was he just hanging around as a studio musician whenever Prince needed him!? Morris was Prince's roadie & runner, I'm pretty sure he was on Prince's payroll. Didn't Morris give Prince "Party up" in exchange for a recording contract to front his own band which turned into "The Time"? Isn't that enough payment and payback? It was a give and take between them. "U do this for me I will make sure U have this".

I get tired of people here trying to discredit Prince's legacy.. rolleyes

Condensate is better than anything that Prince has put out since 2009 and Prince had nothing to do with that album. I listen to Condensate a lot more than I listen to LotusFlower, Musicology and Planet Earth, but I'll say 2009 because the point is still the same.

I know that the albums "The Time" and "What Time is It" are virtually Prince Albums, but those two albums are better than most Prince Albums. All that I know is that Morris and rest of The Time added something to the mix that Prince could have never created without them.

Morris Day saved Purple Rain as a movie. The music and performances were great. The rest of the movie would have been a joke without Morris.

The Time's live performances during the 1999 and Controversy Tours were way better than Prince's. I saw many of these shows and The Time always stole the show.

Prince is a bad MF. But, ain't nobody bad like Morris.

Prince pushes rewind, searching for a scene with the Time. Waiting, he reminisces about the old days, when he oversaw the band. For a tutorial on the proper onstage attitude, Prince remembers, he showed the Time videos of Muhammed Ali trouncing, and then taunting, the old champ Sonny Liston. "To this day," he says, "they're the only band I've ever been afraid of."

.

At first it seems strange for to hear Prince talking in such fond and nostalgic terms about Day and the band. Day left the Minneapolis fold right after Purple Rain, with some nasty words about the boss's supposedly dictatorial ways. Now, Prince says, "I honestly don't remember how we got it together again."

.

Day's old charge of overbossing, however, brings a quirkier and crosser memory. "That whole thing came from my early days, when I was working with a lot of people who weren't exactly designed for their jobs," Prince says. "I had to do a lot, and I had to have control, because a lot of them didn't know exactly what was needed."

.

The most often-told tale involves Prince firing the then-unknown Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from the Time in 1982. Jam and Lewis, all parties now agree, left a Time tour on a day off to produce their first record for the SOS Band. A freak snowstorm in Atlanta grounded them for an extra day, and the two missed a gig. When Jam and Lewis returned, they were summarily fired. Jobless, the two missed Purple Rain, so they set up as producers and went scrounging for clients. In the years since, they've produced everyone from Janet Jackson to Herb Alpert, becoming the other superpower on the Minneapolis music scene.

.

"I'm playing the bad guy," says Prince, "but I didn't fire Jimmy and Terry. Morris asked me what I would do in his situation. Remember, it was his band."

.

Despite the rap, Prince says, he harbors no ill will toward the now-famous producers working across town from Paisley Park at their Flyte Time studios. "We're friends," he says. "We know each other like brothers. Jimmy always gave me a lot of credit for getting things going in Minneapolis, and I'm hip to that. Terry's more aloof, but I know that." And their music? "Terry and Jimmy aren't into the Minneapolis sound," Prince says. "They're into making every single one of their records a hit. Not that there's anything wrong with that, we're just different."

I agree with everything you said about Condensate and Purple Rain, but it makes it seem as if Members of the Time gained absolutely nothing from Prince and to this day each of them have always gave him props (and called him names lol ), but neither has ever denied what he did for them artistically. But some people want to always ignore that part. I'm in the camp that they benefitted each other and say I can believe that the Time gave Prince a whooping during live performances too.

I totally agree, from Apollonia, Jill JOnes, even Vanity they have credited Prince wonderfully

.

It definately was a 2 way benefit. If he didn't have his band, the proteges etc that 1980s era wouldn't have been so great because Prince couldn't fill those shoes. I believe it was Susannah or Lisa that said Prince knew how to bring out the best in people to do the job/fill the role. Lisa & Wendy with all that they have said about 'their lifestyle' or supposedly said, still adore him. Lisa just a few years ago called him a big brother.

.

Also Prince's issues were a hinderance in those people helping to take his vision to the next level. He had the right people key people to expand his Paisley Park. Like you said the members always gave Prince the props and honer he earned.

.

Probably his snub at the reunited original Time in joining him as his opening act on the W2Australia tour, and that they couldn't use the name affected things definately.

But it's weird they all have always tried to stay connected or reconnected. From the Family/FDeluxe wanting to do some music with him when they, the Revolution members, Prince disciplining Sheila E or whatever that was on the W2 tour in Europe. I think he could benefit more at this point from them reconnecting...

I wonder why all the Revolution band members, plus the Time members never joined together as one unit, with a new name, to create new music and tour? Do you think they would attract fans of all age groups given the status of the music industry today? Do you think they could sell out an arena today, minus Prince? Seeing how some fans claim without some of these former band members, Prince would not have achieved his fame in the 80s? What do you think?

[Edited 1/17/14 10:00am]

I wonder why all the Revolution band members, plus the Time members never joined together as one unit, with a new name, to create new music and tour? Do you think they would attract fans of all age groups given the status of the music industry today? Do you think they could sell out an arena today, minus Prince? Seeing how some fans claim without some of these former band members, Prince would not have achieved his fame? What do you think? This question is open to everyone. [Edited 1/17/14 15:10pm]

That is the shortest answer you ever gave me. lol I mean I know most of them have their own solo careers now, but do you think if they all got together today, to form a new band, kind of like Jack White, with new music, do you think they would still need Prince in a band with them, to achieve the popularity and success, they once had with him in the 80's? (Not including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis since they seem to have done well once they were out of the Time)

Actually the Family ie FDelux is off to a great start (of course the music industry now is so wishy washy) but I actually thought it would be cool if the Revolution worked with Sheila E, Morris, Jill Jones a few of the other band members and created some good music, they've proven to be some pretty good song writers and composers

I think it was timing, people went their different ways, tried to regroup, create their own identity. Most would get pigeonheld as Prince Proteges no matter what. Wendy & Lisa went thru that. Also a lot of them started families and did that part of life.

.

I don't believe in that Prince would not have achieved fame with them in the 80s but I do know that Prince of course would not have been as big as he got on his own. He would have been a 1 man piano or accoustic band.

.

the people in his bands back then, believed in Prince and his vision, took it and made him shine. Sheila E the Time the Revolution Jill etc and I find that one difference between them and the 90s group is that they weren't seeing Prince as a stepping stone or trying to steel the spot light or just their to make their money and then move on.

.

Prince starting in 1989 was having problems selling out arenas in the states too, he had ups and downs. But I think they could make something big. Sheila E the Family/FDelux and the Time do well

.

I would have loved it if Prince had Original7/the Time open during that segment of the Welcome 2 tours

Got a hold of him, they were high school friends.

They rock those songs like no other. Prince was afraid to have that band open for him on the Welcome 2 tour, why do you think he nixed them from the 1999 tours

Hell yea!! Eye went to the reunion they had at The Forum here in beautiful Cali4nia in the early 2000's. Although it was nice seeing everyone together. It was very awkward without Prince & BORING!

Although Sheila E's impression of the ABSENT Morris Day was hilarious..

Eye am also really not one that would like a Prince & The Revolution reunion. Eye want too remember them as they were. But Eye would like a pre revolution reunion! With Dez,Andre,Lisa & Bobby.... And of course Prince... biggrin

Now that Eye agree with U on! It was rumors going around, that even The Time confirmed! That Prince was going to have them open for him, here at The Forum in Cali4nia during his 21nites stay here, Then it NEVER happened!! That maybe why Morris calls him an A-hole..... biggrin

Many fans seem to think he wouldn't have been that popular without the Revolution band members during the 80s, but don't you think it was the Purple Rain movie that gave those band members their recognition and popularity, and their association with Princel? You have to admit, that most who attended the movie, went to see Prince. The film, propelled his success, because it exposed his talent worldwide. It was his stage performances in the movie that won most fans over, like when he sang the 'Beautiful Ones', 'Darling Nikki', 'Computer Blue', 'Purple Rain', and the last half of the movie where it exposed his dancing skills, as a performer. Of course, the emotional parts of the movie pulled the audience in, that doesn't go without saying. Thereafter, he pretty much introduced the Minneapolis sound/style to the world, and had other artists trying to copy that sound, Prince's hairdo, and dress styles during that era. It was a fun and memorable era, but maintains its legacy in that 80s era.

About the W2A. He had the Time and Sheila E open several shows for him during the Musicology tour. Sheila E was also part of some of the W2A shows as well. So it wasn't too long ago, that he worked with former members of the Revolution and the Time, not to mention W&L joining him at the Brit Awards and then Wendy showing up at the show at the Target Center in Minneaopolis in 2007 as well. So it really hasn't been that long since he's worked with many former, band members of his 80s crew.

I hear you. The Purple Rain era remains in its own legacy. It was something new back then, that's why the excitement was there. Back in those times, music was being revolutionized all the time. Now in present day, there really isn't any new, type of sound revolutionizing music, the way it used to before the mid 90s, because everything is being sampled or 'We've heard it before' kind of thing. The music industry and radio doesn't seem to be interested in artists that 'sound different' or and don't seem to have much interests in promoting older artists/musicans at this point. So much has changed in the music industry, and lacking so much at the same time. Anyway, getting back to Morris Day, didn't someone point out that Morris Day has a new song coming out? Was it you that stated that? Will be interesting to hear what it sounds like. It's too bad the O7 didn't continue without Jesse. I think they should have at least gave it a try for a year, and hired someone to take Jesse's place..

I don't see how they could do it as 1 group. Sheila E & the Family/FDeluxe did some shows together that was a huge success. That Prince tribute you went to seemed to be huge and attracted a lot of people from all over. As well as Bobby Zs 1st Avenue foundation show

.

I think it is the various groups that's exciting

.

I would love the Revolution to haveJill. Morris lead some songs, see how it fits. Put on a suit and a ruffled shirt and do some Prince songs backed by the Revolution.
