Prince does set those rates, just like he set the very tiny rates the member of the Revolution got for playing on and contributing to Purple Rain. I personally could care less, but I thought I'd straighten you out on that. That doesn't mean Jellybean probably shouldn't be complaining, but Prince owned their asses and he certainly set their pay. You think some suits at Warners told PRINCE how much he could pay HIS people? No sir.

The members of the Revolution each received a 1 million dollar bonus at the end of the Purple Rain tour. That is a million in 1985 dollars. Not bad since with the exception of W&L that rest of the band wrote none of the music.

eek Are you an official representative of Prince? You are defending him vigorously in every post but Im with it! lol

All former proteges and band members were "employees". That's why you hear gripes about things like pay and/or credit for work(or lack thereof). That's why they all get those little checks for being in Purple Rain. Prince was the boss and he was building a brand and getting his music out there through his main group and side projects. People quit(St.Paul) and some got let go(The Revolution except Dr.Fink). Were some of the relationships more personal/intimate than others? Most likely but when did sleeping with the boss ever work out for anyone without some drama and angst. Normally that leads to bad blood and resentments. All this talk of "love" and "friendships" is all well and good but nobody was working with Prince pro bono because they were friends or out of love. It was a job doing what they wanted to do with their lives.

Source: Associated thread article http://prince.org/msg/5/397059 but wanted to highlight this section.http://www.rockerzine.com/index.php/2013/05/f-deluxe-the-family-reunion/

Rocker: Why does he feel the need to control the band?

Susannah: He said, “You can’t have the Jackson 5 without Michael Jackson.” That was his philosophy. I asked, “Well what are you saying? Do you want to be in it? Do you want to produce us? Prince said, “No. I want nothing to do with it.” I said, “I don’t know what to tell you. It’s not just your history it’s our history too. I’m not trying to take anything away from you but we’re all trying to make a living too. We’re proud of this new record and I know you would be as well.” He said, “I don’t want to hear it. I don’t care what you’re doing.” I told him I would go over and play the record for him but he said, “You can’t play any of that for me because it’s not mine. Those are my children.”

Rocker: But children grow up.

Susannah: We all tried to tell them that. The last time we spoke he heard my kids in the background, and my youngest one was little at the time, he said, “Is this a bad time?” I said, “No. I’m about to put my kids to sleep.” He had never actually heard that part of my world. It wasn’t a bad time. I said, “They are my concern but you have my time right now. “ He didn’t like that. He told Paul I was belligerent and that was enough for him. That’s 25 years of a friendship of sorts. I wouldn’t call it a real friendship. Prince said, “I’m done. I’m not going to speak to her. I’m only going to speak with you Paul,” And he had never spoken to Paul in any of the years. Ever.

Paul said, “You don’t own the band. This is not a copyright issue.” Prince told Paul he would do whatever you want for this band if you don’t use the name. Paul agreed and tried to keep Prince to his promise. Didn’t happen. Prince called and said, “You can’t perform any of the old songs live. I will have my guys get out there. If somebody bootlegs it I’m going to come after you.” How do you stop bootlegging in a time of camera phones and YouTube?

Not for nothing, as much as i like them, the time to strike for the family and the time was 25 plus years ago. Both Morris and Paul made decisions to leave. I wouldn't grant them rights either.

nod

Its obvious that Prince was very hurt at Morris,Paul & Jesse's departures. Eye think he was waiting all these years 2 show them how he felt when they abandoned him. Now they want 2 come back & use the name that Prince created when their broke with no careers...Prince is right. Those r his kids & he can do whatever he wants with them. Just don't take his kids & use them 4 their benefit.

Plus Susannah is very shady 4 telling this. But wait! Who is she now? NOBODY but a scorned ex.. rolleyes

None of us had to be there. When the usual gripes about the "good ole days" is all about 'how much money I was making(or lack of said money)' or 'I had a family to support' it sounds like any employee complaining about their job/employer. It just so happens that Prince is the employer in this case. In the case of St.Paul he was hired to replace a fired band member and then chose to quit when he was made a better offer to make more money at the time. Sound like employee behavior to me. All of these people are musicians and they want to earn a living making music. They weren't out selling insurance door to door to make ends meet and then jamming in moms garage. Prince offered people job opportunities to make some money doing what they wanted to do with their lives.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Prince does not own the band names. WB owns some of the names for recording purposes, no one owns the others. And he can't stop anybody at all from playing his music live so long as they pay an exhibition fee. He also has no legal right to stop any of them from making cover versions of any of their old hits. Those are facts. David Bowie can release as many cover versions of Prince songs as he pleases, so long as he pays the mechanical licensing fees, and so can any associated artists if they choose to do so.

People come and go in the entertainment industry. It's not like a typical workplace setting at all. I don't think any of that is the problem. In many cases Prince continued to work with many of them long after they signed new deals elsewhere. He's not mad at them (Prince has got too much money to waste time mad over little stuff), he just dreams of his legacy being something waaay different than the truth. Heck, Sussannah may have been the most influential person on Prince's music, and she never really played a note. She taught him a different side of cool though. It showed up in the music and that's the stuff college kids of the 80's were diggin' on. It's not in the stuff that came after. And Prince doesn't want to admit it.

My opinion on this? Yeah, Prince assembled these groups back in the day and wrote their first album. He was the creator of these groups. But these people are his friends from back in the day, and I think he should help them out a bit by not doing so damn difficult. Let them collect a coin or two as well, who fucking cares???

Says whom? They were for all intents and purposes employees. Did they possibly share some camraderie? Yes, but they were still hired for a job and eventually let go or quit. The women actually got the worst of it by sleeping with him(those that did) while working for him(blurring their status). The men just had to toe the line and do as told(sing this or play that).

Prince proposed at some point to nearly all of them, so come off of it. In some cases he was apparantley engaged to multiple women at the same damn time. All while promising them a life of fame and fortune and opulence. Who's using who? Don't pick on the girls. mad

I was suspicious from the Beginning so I wasn't disillusioned. I took my time, did all the background checks I needed to do, and determined I was right about what Prince and his team were doing to promote his concerts and cd releases. It wasn't right. He had dishonest, shiftless people around him. I believe they're no longer there. I'm not surprised he's currently pounding his cane and saying he doesn't have time for old people. I didn't want to be his next protege and I wasn't going to do things like the young people Shelbey and Jester have done on youtube. It's not my style and I wasn't one of his fans. I chose not to 'lay it down' and let him drain me of my energy and ideas. As a result I was harassed and humiliated. At first, Prince talking smack on record, video, and mouthing off "Do as I want..." on Ellen at the end of his Crimson & Clover performance didn't phase me. I wasn't too angry and I thought it was kind of funny but then he showed how low he would go if he didn't get what he wanted. I don't want to file a formal suit and I'm sure those involved don't want me to file a suit. His brother-in-law doesn't want to "throw anyone under the bus" and since I have facts, if I have to present them to a Judge I most certainly will. There's going to be more than one person getting thrown under that bus and I'm not hearing sorry. It will be too late for apologies then. Prince is still touring but him and his team of female Black lawyers know how to contact me. I won't hold my breath. I doubt he'll make the right move but regardless, it's his move to make.

If you are who you are proclaiming to be I'm almost sure you have signed confidentialy agreements which prevents you from coming here airing out your experience with Prince. so until you can prove that you're not some bored fan making up stories on a public forum I dont believe your story. In addition, as chocolate1 stated if this is a legitimate legal matter then you need to file suit and stop with these punk moves by stalling and coming on a public forum, hiding behind an anonymous name expecting Prince to apologize. If you are on the inside, I'm sure you know how to communinicate with him or his people rather than on the Org. I'm not attacking you personally because I have no idea who you are but I think this is stupid. If I have an issue with someone I deal with them directly, not on a public forum hiding behiind a name.

You don’t know my story and you’re right, you have no idea who I am. I will tell you I’m not “some bored fan” who came here for advice from a bored Prince fan like yourself. I’m dealing with this how I need to deal with him. Do you want to pay my attorney? I didn’t think so. I'm only replying to you because you seem to reply to my post like you're trying to make me out to be someone bored, stupid, or who has gone "off the deep end". Much of what Prince says and does is stupid but you probably like it so why should I or anyone else here care what you think is stupid?

You dont have to care about what I think but I'll express it anyway. I'm also not sure why you would ask me if I want to pay for your attorney? lol you claim you got facts so i'm not sure why you wasting time here hiding behind a username. You got facts then stand up and deal with the person or persons directly. People can come in here and write anything about anything. that does not make it true. Unless you stop hiding behind a username and prove who you are there is no reason to believe in your story. You maybe telling the truth but unless i have proof there is no need for me to believe you. and frankly yes, if you have a legal matter with someone you deal with them directly. Which attorney would be okay with you airing out a legal matter or someone in a potential lawsuit on a public forum? especially if and most likely if you would have signed a confidentiality agreement.

I'm confused...

You complain and make snide remarks when people address your verbal histrionics concerning your "situation", yet you started an account here to what-- "warn" fans about "The Real Prince"? confuse

First of all, just because YOU had a bad experience, it's not all bad. Even with "ordinary folk", stuff happens.

Second, if Prince's people do read this stuff, they- and ultimately he- would not take you seriously because you chose to bring it here.

Also, it doesn't really matter who you are, or why you chose to join here. You brought a big ass spoon and started stirring all over this site. Then you got angry because people didn't grab pitchforks and torches, and run to storm the PP Castle with you.

Before you accuse me of extreme defense of him, you should know that YOU don't know anything about me, or any of the other people you've accused... or who we know, or what we've done. If you don't want people making assumptions about you, return the respect.

And I truly hope you get what you're looking for... Feeling like you don't matter sucks.

Prince proposed at some point to nearly all of them, so come off of it. In some cases he was apparantley engaged to multiple women at the same damn time. All while promising them a life of fame and fortune and opulence. Who's using who? Don't pick on the girls. mad

Exactly my point. When you're just there to make music it's one thing but when you start to believe there could be something more for you in that world is when it gets sticky and when it's over it's not pretty. Not picking on the girls but the men never had that problem to deal with.

But how did they find themselves in that situation? Who approached whom? In a lot cases it was apparantley Prince who initiated the mixing of the personal and the professional. The biographies say that Prince recruited/seduced these women with the idea that he could bring out their inert musical gifts. Some of them are said to have been barely in high school and not even considering a career in music. Yet you blame them for not being more saavy.

Who is blaming them? I am stating that they had to deal with a dynamic that the men in the same organization didn't have to. How they got in that situation isn't the issue either but the idea of there being a future with Prince must have colored how they felt about working for him and how the other employees treated them.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

A few of you still haven't realized I didn't join prince.org for you. I'm not here to warn any of you, I stated in a previous post why I'm here. Maybe if you would have read my Reply 85 you wouldn't be confused. You only bear witness so you don't know how Prince or his people will take me. If he chooses to not take my matter seriously, his legacy he recently mentioned may be get tarnished due to neglectfulness, allowing too many Yes men and women to speak for him, and his brother-in-law not wanting to throw anyone under the bus. If Prince's behavior on this fDeluxe matter gets the OP sick, I'll be interested to know how the OP feels after reading my interview or hearing my testimony.

You're not important to me either so I don't need to accuse you of anything. I don't like your vibe in your replies about me. I'm not interested in you so don't be interested in me. You have no reason to be angry with me. I actually wish you and the others with the same vibe would ignore all of my posts. I didn't come here to get bullied or to bully any of his fans. A few fans came for me with disrespect after my very first post, making assumptions just like you're doing. I haven't accused you of anything and I'm not going to so you can stop making all your assumptions about someone like me who shouldn't matter to someone like you. This thread is about Prince. No need for you to concern yourself with me. Stick to the topic of Prince instead of making untrue statements about my intentions and state of mind. If you're looking for me to apologize to you for walking all over YOUR house (prince.org) with my shoes on then I apologize.

I don't wanna get involved in this whole argument but Sassey I am sure u can understand that the way u communicate here is the best way to antagonize every one here, which is kinda odd as u present urself as a good person who's been a victim. You have to realize that:

1/ No one here understands who u r.

2/ No one here understands what ur back history with Prince and his staff is.

3/ No one here understands what ur accusations towards them consist of.

4/ No one will ever believe that threatening multimillionaire Prince of a lawsuit and asking him for an apology on a public forum has the smallest chance to get u anywhere.

5/ All your interventions (that go as far as to say Prince isn't a good guitar player, for chrissakes!!!) make u look like a troll. I am not saying u r one, but ur behavior DEFINITELY gives that impression.

Therefore, I think it would be most better for everyone here to either introduce urself and clearly xplain the whole situation of ur past relations with Prince and his camp OR to stop posting on this forum.

If things keep going that way, you will get nothing but hostility from everyone here, believe me (i've been here for a long time), and eventually people will mostly ignore your interventions. U may even end-up being banned by the mods for spreading false rumors about Prince and his organization (unless, once again, u xplain urself properly).

Please don't flame me for what I just said, I'm just trying to cool down the situation here smile

Peace.

Databank I wouldn't flame you. Your data is not correct. I am not spreading any false rumors and on the silly 'Should Prince take guitar lessons..." thread that was locked I said I didn't know the technicals of guitar playing and I think Prince is a great guitar player but I don't think Prince will ever be too old to improve the things he knows need improvement or to learn new tricks. I don't like when people change my words. It is not my intention to antagonize any member. If you've read the threads I posted on it appears to be the the other way around and I expected it. I know some members can't stand when people are too frank with their opinions and facts about Prince. I'm sure a few want me to "end-up being banned by the mods" but I haven't broken any of the forum rules. I see members going off topic on many threads around here. I agree with the OP and I think Prince needs to grow up. If I decide to start a thread about me and my experiences I will but until then I'm done with posting on this thread. Some members have been here for so long they are so hostile you would think they are a part of the Prince staff.

Unless this person proves who they say they are its all fraudulent and mere trolling. Every so often you have a bored fan who comes on pretending to be someone they are not. it could be true but coming on the Org to demand an apology when he/she can do so directly with Prince makes no sense, so I'm not buying it.

To her defense Chronic Freeze DID come here to pass a message to Prince (and, while he was at it, answer our questions) a few years back and it's been reported several times that once Prince wants u out every mean of communicating with him is shut down by his staff (that's also what he pays them for). This being said, Chronic Freeze clearly said that he was Chronic Freeze but how will Prince know who Sassey is if we don't? lol lol lol
