Andy Allo vs. Vanity -who is a less good 'singer' ?

If we exclude Carmen Electra who was a rapper it is safe to say that some of the worst "singers " in a Prince camp are Vanity and Andy Allo. So who is more awful? My Vote goes to Andy.Andy is so bad she makes your ears bleed. Her new song is a great groove but her vocals kill the song for me

Andy doesn't have a bad voice, I just think it should be on other types of songs 'softer songs'

Vanity was ok, she was better than Apollonia

Well her new jam sounds bad to me only because of her voice

Oh honey, the texture and tonality of Allo's voice may not be for some, yet she can still hit a basic note properly without a pitch issue; Vanity however, couldn't sing a lick- she basically squeal-talked her way through her records, bless her heart lol .

It's a tough one, as I think what Vanity lacked in nuts and bolts voice talent she made up for in stage presence and charisma (she's like a sexy bob dylan)

While Andy Allo can hit 'basic notes' as someone said above, there is nothing distinct about her vocal stylings, she just appears to be run of the mill. And as with Elixer, if you make the vocals too much the centerpiece of a song where someone doesn't have a great voice, it can really kill it.

It was this same way with Jill Jones' version of "all day, all night" Even though I think jill has a great voice, there was just some element missing when she performed that was there in prince's version

totally agree 1st album first 1 tour she had the strongest stage presence out of all the female proteges

it was a very raw natural expression along with Susan & Brenda

by 1987 Jill should have had at least 2 albums, and a backing band (she was around starting somewhere in the DM/Controversy period)

a 1999/PR era album and a ATWIAD/Parade album

she would have had more stage/character developement, but love her voice, easily stronger than Andy's though

Andy has a nice voice in my opinion, the music of People Pleaser just seems too big for her voice

^ Totally agree on both counts

Jill Jones album was just sort of "well, here it is" Didn't really have a character behind it IMO

yes, especially up till this point the proteges fit into Prince era somehow and were included in touring or shows etc, Jill & the SOTT/Madhouse thing didnt cross at all. we knew JJ/Jill Jones from 1999 and Purple Rain she was a mystery too, and we had access 2 Jill via her inclusion on ATWIAD & Parade music, and who visual the parade UTCM period was an Mia Boccas inclusion I could see a Jill character, but by SOTT and her album release it didnt connect... her album spand to long and diverse a time period from the PR 2 the SOTT

All Day All Night a PR cut with the Housequake beat

I don't agree ,sorry. I think that Jill's album is one of the best to ever come from Paisley Park. Her album lacking charater? The way Jill sings is so powerful and raw and full of passion.listen to Jill belting on Baby You're a Trip or Mia Bocca or power vox on My Man.Jill also did a wonderful cover of Prince's song With You with Billy Idol's guitar player Steve Stevens who is Jill's personal friend.the reason album didn't get more mainstream attention was because of the trippy a bit psychodelic arrangements courtesty of Clare Fisher.Remember Jill's album was in the works since 1982 so it went through varios phases.in the '82 those songs were electro funk but it was '86,'87 time frame and Prince used Clare's input a lot.Clare's orchestrations are sophisticated and not for everybody.

Vanity's best vocal per4mance was the Jesse Johnson penned "Undress me" Vanity remains my all time favorite Prince female protege. She just had that it. She didn't need to be a great singer. Nobody cared...

Vanity may have not been a great singer but she had great presence & knew how to work her image so it made up for it, but andy is bad at singing, dancing & doesn't have any charisma -or maybe like someone else noted maybe its the song, to much for her. Vanity definitely better.

Vanity was an awful singer. Andy is a good singer. I just laugh every time I hear "give me something I can croon to"

But Nasty Girl is still probably the best protege song he ever did.

Have you heard People Pleaser? I'm not arguing Vanity being a great vocal talent, but saying Andy Allo is a good singer might be overstating the case

I downloaded the album today, and yeah I like the way she sings. She's not a powerhouse, but she has style. Vanity has no style, no power, and no skills.

I understand not liking Andy's vocals, but compared to Vanity? Yes, she's good lol

Vanity is by far worse.

Andy isn't bad. She's just not all that interesting.

Had Prince actually replaced her with a better singer, her album would have been better. As such, I found it rather boring.

Hopefully, he'll dump her after she turns a certain age, so we can put this nonsense bethind us and get back to his own disasterous albums of late.

For me, a great singer doesn't necessarily equal a great song. Yes, I'll say that Andy can probably sing better than Vanity. However, Andy's band puts her vocals to shame.

Vanity on the other hand had better music overall, simply because her voice fit the music that she was singing to. Even with Andy's powerhouse band, I don't think that Andy has anything that can compare to Vanity's Nasty Girl, Far Away Eyes, Under The Influence, Drive Me Wild... I could go on. Vanity was also just more exciting in her performances, in her interviews and on every other level. It doesn't matter that Vanity's vocals didn't stack up to most of her peers. She was someone that you wanted to see. I even cut school one day because she was on Video LP (an old BET program) which came on in the afternoon, just because I wanted to see her. She had that star quality. I don't know if that's something that you can teach, but it can take you far if you have it. IMO she was the woman that guys wanted to fuck and who other women wanted to be. Andy's just... bored.

Seems to me, Prince doesn't want to be with a woman with extra-ordinary music ability...

Andy Allo is ok just not sure if the funk music suits her voice...Vanity on the other hand had "IT" even though she did'nt have the vocal chops she had that magic to mesmerize & tease the audience with her charms & god given good looks.......I know i was captivated by her beauty and her coy little way she played with the audience...FOEVER A VANITY FAN!

At least Vanity was honest about her vocal capabilities. She said out of her own mouth that she didn't sing very well. This was an old interview on tv. She didn't take herself too seriously, and it was refreshing. She wasn't out perpetrating like she was some great singer when she clearly wasn't (unlike some other people).

* If ya can't sing, be honest about that shit! lol razz

Vanity just like Sheila E was christened by Prince to sing....It wasn't their calling. But they made it work. Some peeps are destine to be stars. Its called divine intervention...They we're meant to be in the Purple universe....
