I just listened to Elixer again. It sounds exactly like what it is--the greatest living pop musician making an album for someone with no special musical talent. The music is really good, but pretty generic and uninspired. And her voice really offers nothing to the project. He simply fills a role that could just as easily have been filled by anyone. She does not fully detract, but she doesn't add either.

I will say one thing for her. She is able to sing those harmonies, and not everyone could.

^^ I made some similar comments on my own thread about Elixir a while ago. I had finally given it a listen, and I found the music/songs were quite good, but I felt it so painfully obvious that stellar vocals could have elevated the whole thing. Her vocals weren't bad (yes, in tune, harmony), but lacking some "oomph" that the sexy/sultry/playful/yearning songs need.

Prince had written songs for other people in the past - not proteges, but truly talented artists in their own right. He could have given these songs to others and they would have been awesome. Just listen to how great "All This Love" was sung by Prince himself, compared to Bria. Some of those songs sung by George Michael would have made them just too good.

With R. Kelly's ex on that VH1 show, I started thinking about Aaliyah - Now if Aaliyah had sung the album "Elixir," it would have been on a whole other level, makes my toes curl just to think of it. Her voice would have been perfect - smooth and sultry, but with great phrasing and expression and that extra something that distinguishes the truly talented from ...well, from Prince's proteges. confused
